Jeff Yearous presided as president of the sophomore class, with Becky Hunker serving as vice-president, and Mike Hammer as secretary-treasurer. The Sophomores had the most injuries resulting in plaster casts, for ankles, arms, shoulders, and backs. Class rings were ordered and sophomores had a wic selection to choose from. Other activities included hz decorating, and a wagon for the Homecoming Parade. It was spon- sored by the foreign language teacher Ms. Owens. German Club produced several activities which included a root- beer chugging contest and selling hot pretzels. The officers were: president, Dave Mahon; vice president. Dean Nichols; secretary, Tania Giauque; and treasurer, Steve Giauque. 58 First Year For Spanish Club Spanish Club completed their first year at B.H.S. under Miss Yvette Owens. The club was led by Sophie Laso, President; Char Kerr, Vice President; Ginger Guzman, Secretary; and Kathy DeLaFuente. Some of Spanish Club's activities were candy grams for Easter, field trip to Denver for a ballet Folklorico and din- ner at a restaurant. Money raising activities included carwashes for the spring quarter and a banquet; these were to fund a trip abroad for the club. Next year they will be selling carnations for Valentines day and pifiatas along with God's eyes for Christmas. 60 In Honor Societies 60 Brush High School students were elected to the respective Honor Societies, 16 seniors, 13 juniors, 20 sophomores and 11 freshmen. The concert band performed several concerts throughout the year. The marching band attended Colorado University’s Band Day and received an excellent rating. The marching band will be receiving new band uniforms in 1981. Each uniform was custom fitted and will be personalized for each member of the band. B.H.8. Select Choir The B.H.S. Select Choir opened up the year with a get- together at Mr. Chris Hohweiler’s house. Some of the performances were for the P.E.O. Club and the Chamber of Commerce, where they served a dinner. Also, a winter concert and spring concert were put on. They were all-around more active this year because of the new music choreography. NHL ON it Concert Choir Sings To Success Concert Choir began the year with their new music director Mr. Chris Hohweiler. The group numbered 46 members and performed various concerts throughout the school year. They attended the league choir clinic in Bur- lington to sing with students from other schools. Suzanne Foldemarkand Katarina Bodlund, B.H.S’stwo foreign exchange students from Sweden, gave the Christ- mas Concert a Swedish flair when they taught the choir to sing Silent Night” in their language. The Brush High choir gave a Spring concert in May, and received an excellent rating when they traveled to Sterling for the large group contest which also took place in May. Albert Heads B-Club Heading B-Club for the 1980-81 school year was Kevin Albert. Jeannie Strauch served as vice presi- dent; Marc Mullen, secretary-treasurer; and Ted Odle, Sergeant at Arms. Fall projects, such as yard work and corn picking, were the club's main sources of income. Other activities included their annual trip to a Rocky Hockey game, and a pizza party at the Pizza Hut. Club sponsors were; Mrs. Jane Van Dyke, and Mrs. Ga Kirshbaum. mm I,' , During the 1980-81 school year, Clearing House held many activities to benefit the mentally and physically handicapped of Morgan County. They had a Halloween costume party, a Christmas party at the Elks Club, and their annual spring picnic. They also held raffles to raise money for their parties. H.O.9.A. Is New Club At B.H.8. H.O.S.A. is a new organization at Brush High School and the club is involved in public health. H.O.S.A. stands tor Health Occupational Students of America. The mem- bers in this club have done numerous activities related to public health. They made Halloween treats for the nurs- ing homes and Christmas gifts for the kids at Star School and also for the Head Start program in Fort Morgan. They had a bake sale and sold green carnations for St. Pat- rick’s Day as their money making projects. The H.O.S.A. members held one free blood pressure clinic and also did some job training at the hospital and veterinarian clinics. The members in the club were Janine Bruce, Elie Kivisto, Jonna Morris, Kim Reitz, Stephanie Schmer, and their treasurer, Laura Tucke. The advisor of their club was Mrs. Gertge from Morgan Community College. 28 Make It To State The Brush DECA chapter had a very busy year. Their officers were Dave Mahon as president; Kevin Albert as vice-president; Tania Giauque as secretary; and Heather Spencer as treasurer. All together, 28 students from Brush High School attended the state DECA meeting in Colorado Springs. They stayed at the Broadmoor. This year was the second year for the DECA Day 81 at Brush High School. The classes competed against each other in different events. A new money-raising event this year was a Bar-B-Que at the 1981 state track meet. D.E.C.A. held their second annual D.E.C.A. Days con- ing second place. The sophomores took third while the test. The juniors placed first over all with the seniors tak- freshmen edged the teachers out for fourth place. 72 Poulignot Heads FBLA FBLA sponsors for the 1980-81 school year were Miss Frost and Mr. Schafer. Officers were President, Jay Poul- ignot; Vice President, Melinda Salinas; Treasurer, Heather King; Secretary, Jill Stancil; Parliamentarian, Andy Boxer; and Historian, Brenda Marshall. At the district contest, Andy Boxer, Kelly Emhovick, Jay Poulignot, and Jill Stancil qualified for the state confer- ence. Other members also attending the state conference were Tracy Griffith, Wanda Killough, Heather King, Jim King, Terri McGaughey, and sponsor Miss Frost. The state conference was held March 22-24 at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. State winners went to the national conference in Chicago, Illinois. 76 Bucharn Presides Over FHA The 1980-81 school year was a good one for the Future Homemakers of America, gathering 23 members to support the club. Mrs. Thruston sponsored the organization, while Melodie Bur- ham presided as president. Jonelle Gebauer was elected vice-president, Wenona Koehler took the duties of secretary treasurer, and Jeri Wilson represented the club as district representative. The F.H.A. members of Brush High School organized or took part in events through the year, such as the district convention held in Colorado Springs. They also provided pizza for hall-decora- tors at Homecoming, organized a Christmas din- ner for the members of Sunset Manor, and partic- ipated in a State conference in March. FFA ... On The Move The Brush chapter of the Future Farmers of America got a good start in the 1980-81 school year with twenty eight members. Irvin Kalous served as president; Curt Weitzel, vice-president; Dave Krueger, secretary; Mitch Bostrom, treasurer; Gene Braun, sentinel; and Dean Nichols was the club reporter. The club sent judging teams to Colorado State University in Fort Collins for the annual C.S.U. judg- ing contest. The teams judged horses, livestock, dairy, soil, and Ag Mechanics, with the dairy team winning a gold medal. Other activities included the FFA National Con- vention from November 11-16, with Gene Braun, Ron Windolph, and Randy Danielson attending. The annual slave sale and Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry was held on February 21 in the commons and audi- torium. The parent-member banquet was also held on April 9, at 6:30 in the commons. 78 Leading the Forensics club during the 1980-81 school year was Steve Brandenburg. Other officers included Lori King, secretary; Pia Hayes, treasurer; and Andy Boxer, Historian. During the year, they participated in ten speech meets. They attended a workshop at Colorado State University in the fall and held their own work shop at Brush High School in the spring. For entertainment, the club took a field trip to the Country Dinner Playhouse in Denver. They saw a melodrama while they were there. Sponsoring the club for her first year was Ms. Linda Lyons. Brandenburg Leads Forensics Club Guthner Heads IRC The IRC members kept very busy this year by attending pot luck dinners, a Thanksgiving banquet, participating in the model United Nations, a spring banquet, and the spring picnic. The club’s president was Joe Guthner, vice president was Lori Wind, and the secretary-treasurer was Kelly Emhovick. The club was under the direction of Mr. Vic Doyle. At the model U.N., the juniors and seniors represented the following countries: Cuba, the Philippines, Ukrainian S.S.R., and Sweden. It was held April 24 and 25, 1981 at the Michener Library in Greeley. 82 Pierce Leads Math And Science Math and Science club was active in 1980-81, electing officers, taking field trips, and engaging in various other activities. Officers were Rod Pierce, President; Dave Mahon, Vice President; Kelly Emhovick, Secretary; Lori Woodward, Treasurer; and Luis Peredo, Sgt.-at-Arms. The club took several field trips, including trips to Hew- lett-Packard Co. in Loveland and Air Traffic control in Longmont. Math and Science also provided prizes and support for the 1981 Regional Science Fair. - 4TV Proud Crowd's Spirit Thrives Proud Crowd was active in boosting school spirit with it’s activities. Club officers for the year of 1980-81 were Toby Crom- well, President; Lori King, Vice President; A. J. Spade, Secretary; and Crystal Rieb, Treasurer. Class representatives were Jeannie Strauch, Senior class; Eric Ruhl, Junior class; Jeff Albert, Freshman class; and Tom Newland, sophomore class. Some of Proud Crowd's activities were skating parties, ice cream socials, and running concessions for club profit. Sponsoring the club were Mr. Dillehay, Mr. Bever, Mr. Sumner, Ms. Owens, Mrs. Mesch, and Miss Speegle. The number of members dropped slightly from last year. Art Oblander; and Advisor was Robert Gish. During December the club raffled off a moped as a money-making project. District Fall Leadership Conference was held in Greeley. Ted Odle was elected District Vice-President; Art Oblander was elected District Reporter; and Tim Stratton, District Parliamentarian. 95 Four Thespians Receive Honors This year four of the graduating Thespians received hon- ors for becoming Honor Thespians. To become an Honor Thespian, a senior of the club must have attained 60 points which are given for various public performances. Those who received honors were Lori King, Roxanne Likely, Roger Mahon and Bill Yearous. Roxanne Likely served the Thespian Troupe as president for the 1980-81 school year, with Bill Yearous filling in as vice-president. Secretary-Treasurer was held by Jay Poulig- not, Historian by Eric Ruhl and Business Manager, Andy Boxer. Troupe 968 produced two performances during the year. They were: The Mouse That Roared and Arsenic and Old Lace. Mr. Greg Krob was the Thespian sponsor this year. J-Staff Ends Busy Year Under the direction of Mr. Woolley, the B.H.S. J-Staff was busy producing the 1980-81 year book and the monthly Sagebrush Reporter, which contained stories ranging from club trips, feature stories, and letters to Santa. Engineering this year’s yearbook were Sonya Griffith and Roxanne Likely, both occupied in lay- ing out pages and scaling pictures. Tami Jo Newland and Kevin Needens reigned over the Homecom- ing activities. Hall decorating replaced the traditional floats this year because of misconduct by some of the students last year. Student Council sponsored this activity. The junior class took first place, followed by the freshmen, seniors, and sophomores. Homecoming King candidates were Kevin Needens, Kevin Albert, Rich Korthius, and Ted Odle. Queen candi- dates were Tami Jo Newland, Jeannie Strauch, Lori King, and Crystal Rieb. The Digger Volleyball Team lost their first match of the season to the Burlington Cougars in a three game match. But the Digger football team came back to avenge the loss with a 3-0 win over the Cougars. The Homecoming dance was held on October 4th fea- turing Disco Dynamite. During the halftime at the Brush-Burlington football game, Kevin Needens and Tami Jo New- land were crowned as Homecoming King and Queen. They were crowned again at the Home- coming Dance. Under the prom theme of “Dreaming, Kevin Albert and Jeannie Strauch were named king and queen, while Barry Funk and Jill Stancil reigned as Senior Attendants. Marc Mullen and Tania Giauque reigned as Junior Attendants. Kevin Albert Prom King 107 Prom Is Based On Dreamin' Dreamin’ was the theme for the 1981 Junior-Senior Prom, which was held April 25. Chinook provided the entertainment for the evening. Jeannie Strauch and Kevin Albert were crowned as Prom Queen and King. Senior Attendants were Jill Stancil and Barry Funk, while Tania Giauque and Marc Mullen were chose as Junior Attendants. It was written by Leonard Winberely. The play was directed by Greg Krob, and he was assisted by his wife Laura and Ms. Linda Lyons. It took 37 members to perform this two act play. The lead roles were handled by two sophomores, Pat Edson and Lorna Lindell. DECA At Work The Brush DECA Chapter was busy during the 1980-81 time. The season started at the end of August with two-a-days and ended the year in Yuma with a California style play-off game against Burlington, when Brush, Burlington and Wray finished in a three way tie with 3-6 records. The team suffered from injuries to Marc Mul- len, who received an injury to his shoulder, a minor concussion and torn cartilage in his knee. Tom Newland suffered a broken ankle in the first game. Rod Zwirn broke his shoulder at the growth line and was unable to return for the sea- son. The team took first in league play and first at the sub- district tourney. The team again defeated Platte Valley to advance to the state tournament where they took first. Jeannie Strauch, Amy Odle, and Kim Reitz were selected All-Conference. Carlene Larsen and T. J. New- land were Honorable Mention. All-Tournament players were Amy Odle, T. J. Newland, and Jeannie Strauch. Jeannie was also selected Most Val- uable Player for the tournament. Kim Reitz was selected as the Most Improved Player, and Jeannie Strauch was selected as Most Valuable Player for the season. Diggers Make It Two For Two Diggers Bring Back Tradition The 1980-81 Boys Basketball season came to a close with a 10-8 season. LeeRoy Needens and Don Dillehay finished another year as coaches. Needens boosted his record to over 200 wins. Coah Dillehay’s J.V.’s kept up tradition of over a 500 season with a 12 and 3 record. Randy Zila completed his first year as freshman coach with a 4 and 8 season. Bob Bever served as the head coach for the 1980-81 girls varsity basketball team. It was his first year as coach. The Diggers ended their season at the District play off game, with a disappointing 37-41 defeat at the hands of the Weld Central Rebels. This ended the 1980-81 basket- ball season for first year coach Bob Bever, and for the five seniors, it was the end of their high school career. The Cager's overall record was 12-7. The team won the Holyoke Invitational, Haxtun Relays, and finished second in the Julesburg Invi- tational and Yuma Invitational. A total of five trophies were won during the year. The team won the District Meet by a margin of 12 points. State Qualifiers were: Mitch Bostrom, David Naill, Scott Trimbach, Tom Newland, Scott Schantz, Kevin Lee, and Barry Funk. Meet 1st Brush Triangular 3rd NEC Frosh-Soph. 2nd NEC District 1st State Meet at Brush 14th A Very Good Year In 1981 Diggers Bring Back A Tradition Coach Needens stated, “This year we brought back a tradition to BHS. Needens was referring to the berth of his basketball team in the 1980-81 State Basketball Tournament. In the first round the Diggers met the Rifle Bears. Brush put up a good fight but lost 65 to 75. The next day Brush met Denver Christian to see who would advance to the consolation championship game. But once again the Digger cagers didn't fare too well. They lost 54 to 59. Kevin Needens was elected to the All Tournament team. He was also nominated to the North-South all-star game. State Track Held At Brush The 1981 Boys and Girls track team hosted this years State Track Meet. Many of the Brush participants received medals for their performances. Placing in the boys division were Tom Newland, third in the 400 meter dash; Mitch Bostrom, Scott Schantz, A. J. Spade, and Tom Newland taking third in the 800 meter relay; and in the 1600 meter relay, Kevin Lee, Mitch Bostrom, Tom Newland, and A. J. Spade took sixth. Placing in the girls division in the 400 meter dash was Michelle Bostrom with first place; Beth Evans with fourth in the high jump; in the 1600 meter relay, Lisa Gardetto, Tania Giauque, Jeannie Strauch, and Michelle Bostrom placed fourth. Michelle Bostrom also took sixth in the long jump. Cheerleaders Show Spirit Wrestling, J.V. New Addition To Band Along with Chris Hohweiler as the new band instructor, another addition was made to the marching and pep band, the Brush Flag Team. Martha Hohweiler and Monica Lebsock instructed the Flag Team members, Vivian Guzman, Val Guzman, Carla Nicks, Becky Walter, Michelle Carlson, and Nadine Trujillo. The Brush High School Twirlers were also part of the Marching Band.
