Out- standing students were chosen by the Council every month. Four students traveled to Yuma High School in a student exchange program in the Northeastern League. Steve Hansen served Student Council as their vice- president, Darren Hansen as treasurer, and Tammy Jo Newland as secretary. The Christmas Concert was held on December 14 in the high-school auditorium. The group also sang at Sunset Manor and Eben Ezer. Students of both Thompson and Central Schools listened to the choir per- form. Concert choir also took part in the League Choir Clinic, which was held in Brush this year. Mr. Robert Pringle was the director. QBLBCT CJ-fOfR; PERFORMS S7I UES Mr. Pringle directed the Select choir for the year 1978 79. The choir was engaged in 8 concerts during the year. The annual Christmas and Spring concerts were held in the high school auditorium. Concerts were also given to the residents of Sunset Manor and Eben Ezer. Choir members also attended both Thompson and Central Schools. A concert was given to some of the members of the Presbyterian Church in October. All members took part in the League Choir Clinic, which was held in Brush this year. UUSfC DEPARTMENT PEADED BVFRJNGIE Conducting the bands through various activities in his first year at B.H.S. was Mr. Robert Pringle. The Homecoming half time show. Winter and Spring concerts with the Stage Band, and the Mass Band Con- cert in May were a few of the activities of the bands. The Stage Band also played at the Gong Show and for several community functions. 18 J-GJZIFF BRJNGG NEW UEMBERS Joined by thirteen new members, J-staff put together a yearbook and eight papers. The class did this by sell- ing ads to Brush salesmen and yearbooks to high school students and faculty. Newspaper staff, headed by Linda Kuriger and Karen Price, wrote stories on activities and events for the year. Each reporter was assigned a beat on one club. They also wrote features to entertain the reader. Editors of the '79 Sagebrush, Greg Gleason and Todd Ellmg, controlled the preparation of the yearbook. The staff laid out pages by choosing pictures and writing copy. Members of J-staff are as follows; Chris Griffith, Bus. manager; Lydia Villerreal, Ads manager; Mark Edson, Sports Editor. Reporters were: Meredith Gill, Roxanne Likely, Camille Bzdek, Robin Wind, Pat Skinner, Lyn- nette Wessel, Sonya Griffith, Dean Nichols, Wes Schmer, Mark LaFever, Jim Evans, Tim King and Rod Pierce. Controller of all operations in J-staff was Mr. Woolley, instructor of the class. He has taught journalism at BHS since '55. 21 fOJRIGE W5AD£Al4 AIA was once again sponsored by Miss Helen Speegle. The officers included Linda Kuriger, presi- dent; Deanna Odle, vice-president; Crystal Rieb, secretary; and Jeannie Strauch, treasurer. The quilt raffle was AlA’s biggest money-making project along with concessions, and cake raffles. Club members used the money earned to take a ski trip. Other activities were the Ice Cream Social, to welcome the new members, and the end of the year picnic in which outstanding members were honored with awards. B-CUJBDOES F£LLWOR 6-Club's main money maker for the year was their fall work. They collected money from people for doing yard work. Other activities for the club were an exhibition basketball game and the annual club trip. Heading B-Club for '78-79 was Kent Lindell. Darryl Albert was vice-president and Rudy Perez was secretary-treasurer. Mike Meireis was sergeant of arms. Sponsoring the eighteen-senior club were coaches LeeRoy Nee- dens, Helen Speegle and Larry Mills. RU S£t££ LEjADS FBtA During the school year 1977-78, FBLA was the school's largest organization, and again, in 1978-79, it was the largest club. The club membership numbered 79, including the fourteen officers and two sponsors. The officers were: president, Andrea Ruggles; vice- president, Chris Griffith; secretary, Jenni Stinton; trea- surer, Terry Linker; historian. Shannon Fleming; reporter, Leslie Holman; and parliamentarian, Cherie Ewert. The committee chairpersons were: Social, Larry Leis; Fund-raising, Jon Wood; Project Awareness, Kent Lmdell; Chapter Development, Barb Strauch; Leader- ship Development, Deb Mohrlang; Education, Lisa Segelke; and District Coordinator, Jan Mitchell. Mrs. Joan Kreutz and Mr. John Schafer were the sponsors. with Pam Poulignot serving as the District Four Repre- sentative. Some of the organization’s money making activities were raffles—cake and TV, concesssions, the Home coming Carnival, and the jewelry sale. Fun activities included a pot luck dinner with DECA, a fun trip to Den- ver, and a Christmas caroling party. FBLA also hosted its second annual local contest. The contests were held December 2, at the high school. Fifty members qualified to attend the District Conference in Sterling on January 31. Brush hosted the conference with the help of the District Four Representative Pam Poulignot. The 22 members that qualified at district attended State in April. DECA ENTEJ2JAIMS 21 AND . . UnCWELL 0U4UFIES FOR, N£rtONAL£ Eleven students along with Mr. Bryan Whit- ing and Mrs. John Lindell as sponsors, trav- eled to Colorado Springs where these students qualified to participate in the State DECA finals March 4th, 5th, and 6th. Out of these stu- dents, Jan Mitchell qualified to go to the nationals in Houston, Texas, with a sixth place in advertising. Jan flew to Houston on May eighth and par- ticipated through the eleventh. Although she did not place, she commented the trip was a very good experience and she had a good time. 27 LUSBVL ADC IRC Mr. Don Dillehay sponsored IRC during the 1978-79 year. Officers included Paul Lusby, president- Val Rieger, vice-president; Kara Cornum, secretary; and Pat Lee, treasurer. In the fall of the year, the club visited the Civil Defense Center in Denver. They also had a special Thanksgiving banquet. Other activities included con- cessions, a candy apple raffle, several pot luck sup- pers, cake raffles, a pizza party, a spring picnic, a booth in the homecoming carnival, and the annual end-of-the-year banquet. LBCUWQ ACA Advised by Ken McReynolds, the Vocational Clubs of America at B.H.S. sent eight members to Yuma for the Fall Leadership Conference in October. They also sent four of the VICA Auto. Mechanics to Greeley for the 78 79 Skills Olympics in February. During the District Confer- ence held at Yuma in February, the eight members from Brush qualified for the state contest, which was held at Denver in March. The officers of the VICA Club are as follows: President and District Vice-President Larry Leis; Vice President Joe Ely; Treasurer James Kissler; Secretary Doug Mohrlang; Reporter Wes Schmer; Parliamentarian Mark Perez; His- torian John Chubbuck; and the newly appointed 79-80 District Reporter Tom Jiminez. 29 CWRJNG- NOUCB LED BVRUDMfc This year Clearing House again took part in several activities for the mentally and physically handicapped of Morgan County. Charlotte Rudnik led the club as president; Jonelle Gebauer as vice- president; Barb Skinner, secretary; and Ronnie Davis, treasurer. Mrs. Jane Van Dyke was the sponsor again this year and under her direction Clearing House took part in many activities. The club gave a Halloween party and helped with a Christmas party with the handicapped persons from Morgan County attend- ing. The club also took part in several other activi- ties. RjONQ4 CW ERPfc££fDE£ Ronda Chartier presided over Future Homemakers of America for the year 1978-1979. Other officers were: Melodie Burham, Vice President; Jackie Kautz, Secre- tary; Jonelle Gebauer, Treasurer; and Roberta Zwirn, Recorder Historian. Miss Laura Franklin sponsored the club. Members attended the District Convention in Sterling and also the State Convention, which was held in Colo- rado Springs. The club had a dinner for the residents of Sunset Manor and also a dinner for the judges and con- testants of a Brush speech meet. Two pillows were raf- fled off as a money-making project for the club. m fN 50tftV AR Celebrating their 50th anniversary the Brush FFA chapter had a busy year. Activities for the year included judging contests, a trip to the stock show, trips to the state and national convention, and a slave sale. Greenhand installation was also held. Officers included: president, Kenny Herron; vice- president, Carl Herrera; secretary, Larry Steyaert; reporter, Lois Evans; treasurer, Ken McClure; senti nel, Irvine Kalous. Mr. Don Hamilton sponsored the club. MORRIS WEADS GOD SQUAD God Squad's officers for the 1978 79 school year were Lucille Morris, president; Delbert Hammer, vice- president; Jill Mullen, secretary-treasurer; and Anita Thomas, chaplain. Mrs. Woodward was the club spon- sor. Their activities included a dunking booth at the Home coming carnival, concessions, and a skating party. DUDDBN LEADS RODEO CLUB Rodeo Club had an active 78-79 year. Some of the activities included a trip to the National West- ern Stock Show in Denver, and some of the mem- bers participated in rodeos over the spring months. Club officers were Rick Dudden, president; Tony Hass, vice-president; Mike Weitzel, secre tary; and Kim Reitz, treasurer. There were a total of 17 members attending the club this year. 34 S.E.E. C. NUMBERS Sp6 In the 1978-79 school year the members of Stu- dents Exploring Educational Careers selected as their officers JoAnn DeLa Fuente as president and Francis Vasquez as treasurer. Besides the two cake raffles held, S.E.E.C. also had a garage sale on the 21 st of April. For the final club activity of the year, the mem- bers held a picnic during the second weekend of May. Both boys and girls were able to join the club. There were cheerleaders for both boys’ and girls’ sports. Sponsors were Ms. Fix and Miss Potter. Officers for the year were Tami Jo Newland, president; Kara Kor- num, vice-president; and Dave Mahon, secretary-trea- surer. Money-making projects included a cake raffle. The A squad Football cheerleaders were Jan Mitchell (Head). Jill Mullen. Barb Strauch, and Robin Wind. B squad Football cheerleaders consisted of Rita Rocha (Head). Rennie Wahlert, Pam Rodriguez, and Linda Leis. The A squad Basketball cheerleaders were Karen Nixon (Head), Linda Leis, Lorle Wind, and Rita Rocha. Pam Rodriquez (Head). Kelly Emhovick. Heather Spencer, and Jeri Ocker were the B squad Basketball cheerleaders. 38 Berlmda Padilla (Head), Janna Thornsby, Cathy Zadel, Shaire Meza, Val Rieger, and Crystal Draegert were the members of the Pom pon squad. The wrestling squad consisted of Deanna Odle (Head), Shannon Fleming, Lydia Villarreal, Amy Odle, Jennifer Schippert, and Roxanne McGinnis. IW Sr CCIGNCB VfSfTS The club visited Jonas Brothers Taxi- dermy and a corporation specialized in map making. During Homecoming week the club had its annual Pop-Toss which brought an ample sum to the club treasury, before Christmas vacation a Pot-Luck supper for all the members was given. Two speakers, Mr. Edson and Mr. Gabriel, spoke on an Archaeological dig that they have been working on since last summer. A barbecue for the members finishes off the club activi- ties. A total of 22 members were in the 1978- 79 club. Don Gabriel sponsored the club, Mark Edson, President; Chuck Rieb, Vice President; and Lucille Morris, Secretary. 40 7HESFWC ASSIST IN 3 PRODUOIONS This year Thespian Troupe 968 helped in the performance of the Junior Class Play, the All-School Musical and the All- School Play. The Junior Class Play was open to Freshmen, Sophomores, and Seniors this year as well as Juniors. The Thespians also presented their annual Homecoming Pep Skit downtown. One of the highlights of the year was a visit from the group See Saw, an acting group that used sign language in their skits. The group held a workshop for Thespians and then presented a program for the school. Several members also attended a workshop in Greeley on the UNC campus. No banquet was held this year because no date could be found. 41 SEWP OPAlt IN MEETS Leading the Forensics club during the 1978-79 sea- son was Lynnette Wessel as President. Other officers included Karen Price as Vice President; Jill Mullen, Secretary; Pat Lee, Treasurer; and Meredith Gill, Histo- rian. In all, seven members participated in speech meets. They were: Meredith Gill and Pat Lee in Interpretation of Humor; John Lindell in Extemporaneous Speaking; Jill Mullen in Interpretation of Drama; Karen Price in Solo Acting; Lydia Villarreal in Poetry; and Lynnette Wessel in Extemporaneous Speaking and Original Ora- tory. Several meets were attended during the year, the last one being the State A and AA Speech Festival in Golden. Jill Mullen took a third place trophy and Karen Price received sixth place at the festival, with Meredith Gill and Lydia Villarreal receiving honorable mentions. Money raising projects for the Forensics club this year included selling both Christmas and Valentine's Day candygrams. 46 PAGE SPONSORED BY CHEM-AIR BCLUB UE UBERG WAltHTWE- ROCWEO ND CHOW ATMJ U -YU U TREE B Club members worked hard in the fall doing people's lawns in the town. The work paid off as the club was entertained by eating at the Yum-Yum tree and watching the Rockies hockey game. The Club got a double treat as the Rockies tallied to one of their few wins, 8-2. The trip took place on April 1. BRUSH PLACES IN CHAPTER OFTWE. YEAR 48 m was aoivsysar 49 KDrSTONk WGMJGWS m'C W Seventeen students, along with Miss Helen Speegle and Mr. Dale Krueger as sponsors, and Mr. Larry Baker as the bus driver traveled to Keystone for AlA's annual ski trip. Most students enjoyed the skiing with only one person receiving an iniury. Kim Reitz injured her arm while doing unplanned daredevil stunts. The End-of-the Year Picnic which was scheduled for the Memorial Park, was canceled due to weather. But that didn't stop the members from enjoying char- coal-broiled hamburgers. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Toohey donated their house and facilities for the club’s use. The Outstanding Members were: Deanna Odle, senior; Tammy Toohey, junior; Jeanme Strauch, sophomore; and Amy Odle, freshman. 50 CLEARING- NOUCB. PARTY Clearing House held a Halloween Party for the mentally and physically handicapped citizens of Morgan County. The club also hosted a Valentine's Day Party for the mentally and physically handicapped citizens of Morgan County and helped with a Christ- mas Party. CARfJfVU. fNCRZACEC CPtRJT FBLA sponsored the second annual Homecoming Carnival, October 12, held as a spirit booster and a fun activity for the whole school. Every club and class was asked to enter a booth. FBLA's Car Bash and Jail were returning booths, with the chapter adding the Goldfish Booth and the Candy Stand. Some of the other booths were a Balloon Shave, Wheel of Chance, Dunking Booth, Dart Throw at Teach- ers, and the Penny Toss. The carnival was a success with every club making a little profit, and all of the participants having a good time. 54 FORENSICS ENJOVS UELODR W 55 DfNNE £PWER£ FEATURED IRC featured several speakers at various pot luck suppers this year. Interesting presentations were given by showing films and slides as well as pictures from countries all over the world. Speakers included Mr. and Mrs. Specht about Europe, Miss Wind on India, Val Rieger about Spain, and an MCC student from Saudi Arabia. 56 RODEO CLUB RIDES ON 57 59 COUNCIL CPONCORC Student Council had an active year in the 1978-79 school campaign. The Council sponsored such activities as Homecoming, a Christmas Door decorating contest, Morp dance, Gong Show, several sock hops, and also took part in league student exchange program. Todd Elling served as the 1978-79 Student Council president. Steve Hansen served as vice-president until February, with Chuck Rieb finishing out the term. Darren Hansen was the Council treasurer, and Tami Jo Newland performed the duties of secretary. FOURTH IN CONFERENCE- From beginning to the end of the season, the Brush Beetdigger basketball team fought a tough battle, and finished fourth in conference with six wins and six losses. Although Brush put up a valiant effort, they lost the first round of sub districts to Julesburg. GIRLS COUPLER SECOND ylar Girls basketball completed their second year at B.H.S. The girls finished the season with a 3-10 record. At sub- district, they had one loss. The players are as follows: Manager Ellen Gutierrez, and the players from left to right: Vicky Rocha, Val Specht, Julie Windshiemer, Jean Strauch, Camille Bzdek, Tammy Toohey, Tami Jo New- land, Jenni Stinton, Linda Kuriger, Tammy Hitchens, Mary Kay Blatt, Gina Rocha, and trainer Trudy Krai. Their coach was Sara Brandes. The junior varsity had a good season. Their record was 7-2 in league play. Sue Edwards was the coach. WRESTLERS CBNDJURBBTO QZSJB Coaching the Brush Wrestling Team for the fourth year were, head coach Tom Justice and assistant coach Randy Zila. The team finished with a 4 1 conference record and placed third in the district tournament in Akron. Three wrestlers went to the state tournament in Denver, and thirteenth place was captured by these wrestlers, Fran- cis Herrera, Mitch Bostrom and Bryan Parkhill. The team was the first to run on the new track which was just recently built. Eight events qualified for the Track and Field Events at the Colorado State Championships which were held in Ft. Collins. Those Girls who proceeded to State were as follows: Linda Kuriger, Deanna Odle, Tammy Hitch- ens, Jami Miller, Stacy Greenwood, Linda Leis, Tami Newland, and Jeannie Strauch. Vicky Rocha, the team manager, also attended. The mile-relay team, which was made up of Green- wood, Hitchens, Newland, and Strauch took fifth place. The state qualifiers spent the night in Ft. The team tied for first place in the league with arch- rival Wray and took second in the sub-district tourna- ment. Advancing to the District playoffs they played Platte Valley in Kersey. After a competitive three game match, Platte Valley won and went on to take the State Champi- onship for the third year in a row. Awards given at the end of the season were Most Accu- rate Server with 165 and Most Valuable Player going to Linda Kuriger, and Most Improved Player awarded to Gretchen Dickerson. Players selected to all-conference were senior Linda Kuriger and junior Camille Bzdek with Jenni Stinton, Tammy Toohey and Jeannie Strauch receiving honorable mention. TWREk GOTO SP5IE Qualifying for the state tournament in Denver this year were Francis Herrera, Mitch Bostrom and Bryan Parkhill. These wrestlers went to Denver on the 8th, 9th and 10th, to wrestle in the tournament. Of the three Parkhill placed second and Bostrom placed fifth. Francis Herrera was eliminated in the first round and failed to place. The team finished thirteenth over all and ended the 1978-79 season. DIGGERS FfNfSW 7-10 SEASON Serving as coaches for Brush this year, were Lee Roy Needens, Don Dillehay, and Larry Mills. Both Needens and Dillehay coached their ninth season at Brush, and for Coach Mills, this was his first year at leading the Fresh- men. Needens’ career record jumped to 197 wins, and 63 losses, while Dillehay’s junior varsity slate leaped to a 114-25 record after an 114 season. Mills’ career record started at 5 wins and 11 losses. Float competition, a carni val, and Spirit Week comprised the student's time during the week. The juniors finished second. The freshmen edged the sophomores for third place. FBLA sponsored the 1978 Homecoming carnival in which many of Brush High's clubs sponsored a booth. In the homecoming float contest the seniors received their second consecutive first place vote. The theme was Diggers are Superstars”. The Jr.-Sr. prom, honoring the seniors, with the theme Tomorrow”, was held on April 28. Preparing for graduation the Senior Steering Commit- tee chose the colors Princess Blue and Luster Blue for the caps and gowns. May 18 was set aside for Baccalau reate practice.
