TO THE COMMUNITY OF BRUSH In gratitude for the aid and encouragement given to our grad- uating class during the past school years, we, the Class of 1947, dedicate this annual. 7o the. Sesuosi ClaAA. 4 947 SUPERINTENDENT, MR. E. W. THOMSON Many people will congratulate you upon finishing your high school work! Most of these people will be sincere, but a few will be uttering only expressions which seem to fit the occasion. I can sincerely congratulate you but for fear it might seem that I am only repeating a shopworn expression, I would like to approach the matter from another direction. In homely and everyday language, I would like to dare you: To play all innings of the game of life according to ac- cepted rules, but to accept graciously any penal- ties should you violate the rules; To lead such a clean and honest life that you can sleep peacefully with yourself at night; To be the best businessman, engineer, nurse, teacher, politician, doctor, journalist, preacher, laborer, lawyer or other workman your ability will allow you to be; To bring to pass in all ways the dreams and hopes for you of your parents, teachers and friends. Class of 2947— DARE YOU! From the Editors CLARICE WILSON, Co-Editor BRUCE HANSON, Co-Editor The Superintendent has stated that many people will extend congratulations to members of the graduation class. Few of these people will bother to give us suggestions or hints as to the problems facing us. Each of us will be on his own, no longer protected or guided by the teachers and parents who have helped with many of the troubles and difficulties. We shall be separating after graduation to follow different professions. It may take some time for us to become ad- justed to the various persons with whom we come in contact and to the surroundings in which we find ourselves, but using both time and energy to the very best advantage, We, the Co-Editors of the annual representing the Senior Class of 1947, ACCEPT THAT DARE! The Student Council of Brush High is a democratic institution set up with Service to the School as an ideal. The members are, besides the officers, representatives of every organized class and group in the school. The council sponsored the cleaning of the BHS pennants and flags, directed the school in campaigns, sponsored different assemb- lies, the members purchased the National Student Council pins and many other activ- ities were accomplished under the leadership of Joe Colwell, President, and Mr. Marcell and Mr. Schweers who were the sponsors. JOE COLWELL Student Body President Senior Class History ONE very bright day in September of the year 1943, the city of Brush was arroused by the sound of loud groans. As they opened their doors to investigate, they were greeted with lipstick smeared faces, high-topped boots, and shorts of every color. Yes, it was our initiation day, the highlight of our Freshman year. As leaders of the lowly Frosh we chose: Albert McNamee, president; Estelle Lebsock, vice-president; Lynn Hutcheson, secretary; Bill Washburn, treasurer; and Gene Richard, stu- dent representative. We surpassed two of the upper classes by winning second prize on our inter-class play, “Marriage Wows.” Under the leader- ship of our sponsors, Mr. Clark and Miss Johnson, we made it through our first year in B. H. S. In 1944 the class of ’47 came trooping back to the old corral to start a very successful Sophomore year by choosing these officers: Joe Colwell, president; Florence Paynter, vice-president; Dorothe Peterson, secretary; Gene Richard, treasurer; and Clarice Wilson, student representative. Highlights of our Sophomore year were the traditional hayride and decor- ating for baccalaureate. We again took second in the inter-class plays. Mr. Seguine and Miss Walters were our guides for this year. Our Junior year was full of activity with the following officers: Carl Downing, president; Harold Norwood, vice-president; Ardenia Foos, secretary; Joe Colwell, treasurer; and Florence Paynter, student represent- ative; Mrs. Bristol and Mr. Chesney riding herd. By selling coffee and hot dogs at football games we started down the financial trail which lead to the success of the prom and banquet. Along the way we presented the Junior Class Play, “One Mad Night,” which was received with much enthusiasm. On the night of May 20, we played hosts to the Seniors at the annual Ban- quet, held at the Masonic Temple. The evening was climaxed when the wheel of many colors cast itis spell over guests and hosts, as they danced in “The Garden of Tomorrow.” The fall of ’47 found us as top hands. With the Freshman following humbly at our heels we started our senior year with initiation. This vear we chose Albert McNamee, president; Bruce Hanson, vice-president; Flor- ence Paynter, secretary; Ardenia Foos, treasurer; and Stan Gray, student representative. Mrs. Bristol and Mr. Mercer were chosen as our leaders. In keeping with the theme of the Sagebrush, we chose “Dude Ranch” as our Senior Class Play. We are proud to have reached the end of the trail in B. H. S. as the Senior Class of 1947. MR. FRANKLIN MERCER Sponsor MRS. The next year, under the presidency of Ray Meininger, the class of '48 rose to take the blue ribbon award in the Homecom- ing and second place in the inter-class plays. The customary hayride was given, by this original class, in the spring instead of fall. This momentous year was closed by the customary decor- ation for Baccalaureate and Commencement. FIRST ROW: Doris Rediess, Bob Roe, Marjorie Sauerbreit, Bob Sharrit, Wayne Small. Headed by Lloyd Loren3en, the class of ’48 again carried off top honors in the Homecoming parade. With the much needed and appreciated help of their spon- sors, Mrs. Wilkerson and Mr. Richards, the Juniors gave a suc- cessful banquet and prom, May 19, 1497. The theme was “Aloha.” The prom and banquet was very efficiently managed this year by Eloise Starr with the help of other co-operative Juniors. SECOND ROW: Mary Sorenson, Eloise Starr. The following people were elected as our Freshman class officers: Pres- ident, Harold Stitt; Vice-President, Virginia Lewis; Secretary, Joyce Christensen; Treasurer, Jim Lorensen; and Student Representative, Jim Allingham. The offi- cers proved to be capable and with the cooperation of the class, and under the guidance of Miss Johnson and Mr. Mercer, our sponsors, our Freshman year was a successful one. One of the achievements of the year for the class was the presentation of the play, “Junior Buys a Car,” which placed third in the interclass play contest. We began our Sophomore year by electing these officers: Paul McDill, President; Jim Lorensen, Vice-President; Neil McLagan, Secretary; Bud Luethi, Treasurer; and Cecil Lusby, Student Representative. The class sponsored the Sophomore hayride in the traditional manner as their first activity of the year. The pleasure of winning second place in the Homecoming Parade was one of the high-lights of the year as was the honor of decorating for Baccalaureate in the spring. To top off the year, the class, encouraged by our sponsors, Mr. Schweers and Mr. Lindbergh, presented the play, “Angela’s Surprise. It is the purpose of the Brush High School Girls in Pep Club to be of the greatest possible service to our school and our community by promoting spirit and supporting our athletic teams. Our uniforms were maroon skirts with white blouses. During the year, however, we sponsored a school dance, sold Beetdigger stickers, and planned a minstrel to increase the treasury for new uniforms. The Pep Squad gave stunts at the football games and a Shock Troop was organized for basket- ball stunts. Much was accomplished by the club and it may be considered as a very successful year. This is done immediately to insure protection for the students. Fire drills are called twice a month at unexpected intervals at which time neither the squad members nor the students are warned. These drills are sometimes taken too lightly by the students. They should realize that clearing the building quickly could avert the loss of many lives. Each time a fire drill is called the members work for greater speed and efficiency., As you can see this is one of the most im- portant organizations in school. The first articles of business to be transacted were selecting a suitable name and drafting a constitution. The name selected was “Los Peiones Perezozos” (The lazy peons). A contest was held among the members of the club during the pheasant and duck season and the game was served at a Father- Son banquet.
