The election of officers showed John Doyle, President; Bob Gill, Vice-Pres- ident; Beverly Oldemeyer, Secretary; Nadine Waters, Treasurer; and David Johnson as Student Representative. Initiation was the highlight of our Freshman year. Our Sophomore year we decorated for Baccalaureate and sponsored in tradi- tional fashion a hayride. We also won first prize in the Inter-Class Play contest. Officers, our Sophomore year, were Bob Gill, President; Bob Washburn, Vice-Pres- ident; Nadine Waters, Secretary; Betty Lou George, Treasurer; Beverly Oldemeyer as Student Representative. The Junior year, a year to remember! Outstanding was our Jr. Class Play, “Wild Ginger,” and the Junior-Senior banquet and prom with “Stairway To The Stars,” as our theme. Our Junior officers were Lorenz Lassen, President; Bob Hanson, Vice-President; Betty Lou George, Treasurer; Helen Kemp, Secretary; and Mildred Stitt as Student Representative. In 1945 we became the High and Mighty Seniors. We gave the “Nativity” with Allen Joppa as Joseph and Beverly Oldemeyer as Mary. The Annual was also sponsored by the seniors. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY 1A®r.Fres|jmen:, V?e .cl ss of 48 started w th the enrollment of sixty-seven. One of the largest groups of typical Greenhorns that have ever passed through the portals of B. H. S. t Keeping the meetings under control were Alan Capper. President; Charma Clift, Vice-President Ede ar Lassen. Treasurer; Patricia Kastler, Secretary; Eleanor Ostwald as our Student Representative Mr Mercer and Mrs. Miles were our Class Sponsors. The Sophomore year has ushered in sixty of the sixty-seven from the Freshman Class. The traditional Sophomore Hayride was postponed because of cold weather. The Sophomores were very proud to come through with the blue ribbon award of first place in the Homecoming Parade. We carried out the homecoming theme of welcoming our Alumni home from the war. 6 The Sophomores, noted for--well they must be noted for something--put on a play titled “They Put On a Play. This was one act comedy concerning a high strung director, author who has won’ first prize at a county fair and feels it is her duty to put it on at the local Grange. As in preceding years our class had the honor of decorating for the Bacalaureate Services. We carried out the theme with the Senior Class colors of Pink and Silver. FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY Our Class of fifty students entered Brush High School as one of the smallest classes for many years. We thought we were the class of ’45 but we soon found out we would be the Class of ’49 if we studied hard for a few years. We held a class meeting and elected officers and chose sponsors to guide us through the year. On the morning of September 21st, Freshman initiation was held preceding the football game with Yu- ma. The Seniors sponsored a school dance that night to welcome us into school activities. Our class play “Junior Buys a Car,” was given November 14th. The well-chosen cast gave an excellent performance. Our Freshmen boys took an active part in athletics and our girls supported the Pep Club. All the mem- bers of the class took an active part in various school organizations. H. S. has passed un-acclaimed. He is the person who polishes the gym floor, cleans up after school dances, sweeps the class-rooms, and even peacefully contends with the num- erous sunflower seed hulls to be found on the premises. He is the man who always has a cheery hello, and a few extra words of encouragement handy to be passed along to those who find themselves in such need. He is also the object of many a harried search and Have you seen Bert? When something goes wrong and no one can locate what is needed, the problem is referred to Mr. Clift. Sponsoring a yen con- test, and school dance, the isational Assembly Programs, and class- assemblies also constituted a part of the year s activities. Prizes for the annual Homecoming Parade on iNOvember 16 were given by the Student Council who also instigated and arranged the parade festivities. The Student Voice Box continued to play an important role in the activities of the Council and Student Government. Many various problems were discussed at weekly meetings, that had been sub- mitted through the Student Voice. The Council also sent four members to the Convention of Stu- dent Councils held in Fort Collins in April. The club also sponsored a dance February 22 after a Brush-Fort Morgan game. The money will be put into a fund for the purchase of new uniforms as soon as possible. Because of the shortage of skirt material and sweaters, our uniforms again consisted of a maroon skirt and a white tailored blouse. The purpose of the B. H. S. Pictured above are the “cream of the crop” in sports which in- clude football, basketball and track. In order to become a member of the “B” club, these boys had to excell in their particular sport to the extent that the original members of “B” club saw fit to in- clude them among their number. The activities of the “B” club this year have been quite limited. Three charms were awarded this year. The gold football was award- ed to Pokey Doyle as most valuable player and the gold basketball was awarded to Lorenz Lassen as most valuable player. The gold track shoe to Howard Dean as high point man of the season of “45”. These awards were made by our sponsor, Mr. Allingham. Gold stars were awarded to Willard Christensen and Bob Hanson having been elected Captains of Football and Basketball teams. The “B” club gave a dance after one of our home basketball games. It was a tremendous success and the money received pro- vided the purchasing of school letters and the gold charms awarded. With the ever increasing athletic ability of Brush High School, the “B” club hopes to mature into one of the largest activities in the school. • • • Fire Squad FRONT ROW: H. Schreiner, C. Downing, B. Hanson, B. Washburn, J. Doyle, V. Smythe, Mr. Mercer. BACK ROW: H. Norwood, A. Joppa, W. Christensen, B. Gill, L. Lassen. The Fire Squad, which is probably one of the most important activities in this school, is never given enough credit for its work. The probability of saving our lives in case of fire, lies in the hands of the fire squad. Mr. Mercer, who is our sponsor, has made plans for the changing of exits in case of a fire which would blockade one of the fire extinguishers in the spring. This is con- sidered a pretty hard job because of the chemicals used; but the fire squad, like ordinary firemen, know that sometimes they must take chances. Because of the high cost of linotyping the paper was stenciled. Special issues for holidays were publish- ed, and the work was done with the help of two sponsors, Mrs. Wilkerson and Mrs. Bristol. Allen Joppa served as Editor, with Bruce Hanson as Assistant Editor. The club as a whole was responsible for the articles turned in, and various girls did the task of the typing. The publication date was set for every Friday, and it is hoped that next year it will be possible to install a regular Journalism class to be conduct- ed for credit. Bruce Allingham, principal of B.H.S., took over the coach- ing of football last fall, and brought the “Diggers” along to a .500 season. In basketball, he had the help of Everett Ches- ney, shop instructor, recently discharged from Navy service, in the latter part of the season; and the Diggers won two games each from College High of Greeley, and Sterling to hit the jackpot in a hectic finish. Mr. Chesney took charge of the 65-man track squad this spring, and expects a splendid season on the new cinder track being constructed just west of the school building. Football . . . FRONT ROW: B. Brush’s Beetdiggers, once a power in Colorado football circles, but for several years a punching bag for Northeastern and Eastern Colorado teams, began a comeback last fall by whipping five out of the ten teams they played. They lost all four conference games, but the last two against Morgan and Sterling were real battles. Lettermen of 1945 include Bob Hanson, John Doyle (most valuable player), Lorenz Lassen, Willard Christensen (honorary captain), Herman Schreiner, Doug Thompson, Har- old Norwood, Howard Dean, Dick Baughman, Allen Capper, Claude Hagan, Lloyd Lorensen, Carl Downing, Bill Washburn, Bob Roe, Leland Christensen, and Bud Luethi. For the first time in the history of the Beetdiggers copped the Runnerup spot in the Northeasten Colorado League and went to Denver as one of the eight teams playing for the State Class A basketball title. The Diggers played a heavy schedule of practice games to prepare for the hectic conference season of play, and then beat out Sterling’s Tigers and the Bulldogs of Col- lege High. Fort Morgan, a real powerhouse, enjoyed an undefeated league season to win the championship. Three Seniors, Lorenz Lassen (most valuable player), Bob Hanson (honory captain), and John Doyle, wth a Junior, Doug Thompson, and a Sophomore, Dale Stinton, comprised the first five, with Lloyd Lorensen, and Albert McNamee as first string reserves. Dick Baughman also was vot- ed a letter by the “B club. Players who represented B.H.S. at the tournament were Lassen, Han- son. Doyle, Thompson. L. Lorensen, McNamee, Gray, McDill, and Sharritt. The Brush Track team of 1945 held their position of last year in the confer- ence track meet in which four schools were present: Brush, Morgan, Sterling and College High. Although track is never a very popular sport, either for contestants or spec- tators, it requires as much training and conditioning as any other sport in high school. The winners of the 1945 northeastern conference were L. Lorensen, first, half mile; V. Smythe, first, mile run; H. Dean, first, 220-yard dash and second in 100- yard dash; H. Teter, third in pole vault; Bob Amen, second in broad jump and third in discuss; Bob Hanson second in shot put. We placed second in both the mile and half-mile relays. We of Brush High expect a very favorable season this year. We have gotten an early start and we hope to make real use of our new cinder track and field just west of the high school. NATIONAL ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP SOCIETY After lying dormant several years, the National Athletic Scholarship Society for Secondary Schools was reorganized here at B.H.S. this year, and nine members were elected to the Society. They were Willard Christensen, John Nygaard, Vernon Smythe, Claude Hagan, Allen Capper, Albert McNa- mee, Leland Christensen, Dale Stinton, and Lloyd Lorensen. The boys were each presented with a Certificate of Recognition and a silver Key emblematic of the ideals of the National Organization. Membership is limited to those athletes who fulfill the following standards: (1) He must have earned a letter in a competitive sport at B.H.S.; (2) He must be in the upper 50% of the school scholastically for three consecutive semesters; (3) He must exemplify desirable citizenship and leader- ship qualities.
