Since we are leaving, it is only natural that we glance back at what has gone before. It was early in the morning when we came to Brunswick High School for the first time. The sun shone down on the open door through which we would pass for the first time. Yet beyond this door, where the sun did not penetrate, was the darkness of the unknown. But as Freshmen, we plunged on, not a little afraid. This first year flew by quickly, as we took stock of our sur- roundings, met new friends, and started our trek through high school. Then came the never to be forgotten Sophomore year. Wise Fools indeed! Who needed to be wise? Everything was wild and exciting. For the first time we burst out in our new found strength. And so we rolicked through our second year at BHS, but it too went quickly. Our Junior year, as is natural, was slower and calmer. We all had learned a great deal in the previous year and were finally settling down. Maybe it was the fact we were upperclass- men or maybe it was simply the sober thought of what we are going to do with ourselves in the future. In any event, our third year slipped by quietly. Then finally, the greatest year of all. We returned in the fall to find ourselves Seniors! We sat on the top of the school and its organizations. Yet, this year has gone faster than any of the others. Our memories of it are blurred into one mad kaleidoscope of happenings, and we are far from being done. Before us lies Class Night, the Senior Ball, and most of all, Graduation. Yes, we are leaving. We're going through that door we entered four years ago. But it is evening now. Behind us, the school which we know so well is brightly lighted, beyond lies the darkness of the night. In this darkness is the uncertain future, but We readily go out, leaving the familiar behind, go out into the darkness, knowing the dawn is soon to come. --James Tierney I2 gf , . For the first time, the Affiliation Clubwas able to send two of our fellow students, Linda Millay and Steve Black, to Lubeck, Germany. Also, for the first time in the history of the exchange program, we have an exchange student from Rochefort, France, Francoise Craipain, who is studying with the Senior class. Shy by Nature, Frankie has come a long way in overcoming this trait, the biggest step was to become an Exchange Student. She takes her obligations as an exchange student seriously. Her main reason for wanting to come to America was not only to gain an tmderstanding of American culture and to give up some understanding of French culture, but also, as she has put it, to help build bridges by bringing France and America closer together. But, alongwith Frankie's serious nature, she has alight side also. Although previously un- familiar with our school sports, she has become a loyal fan. Since there are no school sports in her school, she was at firstunused to the cheering and excitement of football and other Bruns- wick High Sports. However she soon learned the cheers well enough to yell with the crowd. Besides school and sports events, Frankie enjoys camping and mountain climbing. Even though she can climb up a mountain quickly while most people are askingfor rest, she has often found ithard to keep up with the fast pace of American life. She is learning and, we in turn, thank her for all she has taught us. 87 Frankie In France and In Maine MOST DEPEN DABLE MOST INTELLIGENT SENIOR SUPERLATIVES MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT MOST FLIRTATIOLIS 9 P f- f- af, 'm:s51f7 kt.' .,' 1 .A N ,N . x ff syivf-Q-,,3,b-.xwf H ,, .g.-- is--W Swmafpr-A ,fi A A9515 :al ' - . ,Q 2? ff' E? Artwork, school newspapers, tapes and pen pals names have been exchanged between our club and those in Germany and France and an exchange student, Francoise Craipain is currently attending B. H. S. while two students from this school are inGermany. Also, the club, under the auspices of the American Friends Service Com- mittee has sent several students to seminars and institutes sponsored by the A. F. S. C. This year, in order to finance these activities, the club has held a candy sale, a supper, and a dance. The club also sponsors a booth at Snogard and a Foreign Exchange Student Day in March. THE BIOLOGY CLUB The term Biology in the club's name clearly expresses its significance and purpose. Today, Biology--the science of plant and animal life--is expanding rapidly. Everyday a new and different phase is discovered, and the purpose of the Biology Club is to keep in touch with this rapidly grow- ing Science. This is done through field trips to such places as Swan Island and the Bird Banding Station, through affiliations such as Things of Science whereby once a month the Club receives an experiment to perform and the Science Newsletter, through guest speakers on various careers, and through student projects. For the first time, the club will offer a scholarship of S100.00. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Senior, that has shown outstandingwork and interest in the fields of Science and who is going to continue his education in a field of Biology. Not only did the debaters argue about this topic among themselvesg but also, every once in a while, they traveled around the state, looking for other high school students to start an argument with. However, due to budget limitations fno budget at alll and due to the temporary breakup of the Cumberland County Debating League, the B.H.S. Changes in format livened up the paper considerably, and the editors and staff spent much time trying to improve news and features writing. Sports writing, long neglected part of the newspaper was given a new slant, moved the fourth page, and accompanied by action photos. For the first time in several years, the staff put out eight issues this year. A partial reorganization of the Editorial Board made this body more effective, and the addition of a Managing Editor to supervise the actual printing of the paper relieved the Editor-in-Chief of many petty but troublesome chores. The members of the Editorial Board were hard working as always, and the staff in general, somewhat larger this year though quite small, took a very active part in the production of the paper, and laid the groundwork for a proposed expansion to six pages. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the representative student government at Brunswick High School. This year, the council has been more active than at any other time in school. During the course of the year, the council has sponsored Park-In-Ja, formed the organization for SNOGARD, earned money for a scoreboard, sold refreshments at all activities, and for the firsttime, will give a scholar- ship to some deserving SENIOR. Many reforms have also been made within the council as the Constitution, was revised to insure alarger, more active membership. Due to the outstanding work of David Livernois, Presi- dent, the meetings were much smoother than ever before. In summary, the Student Council has definitely fulfilled its purpose: To act as a bason body between the opinions of the students and the faculty, to promote the general welfare of Brunswick High School, and to extend the principles of self-government and democracy within the school. l2l FIRST ROW: L. BHS VARSITY FOOTBALL The 1964 varsity football squad enjoyed one ofthe finest gridiron campaigns in many seasons at BHS. Under the expert guidance of Coach Warren Baron Pearl, the Dragons compiled an 8-1 mark, including a 48-6 trouncing of arch rival Morse. Only a late-season loss to Madison prevented Brunswick from capturing its second-straight Class B championship. An unusually large number of players on the team were seniors. Included in this group were co-captains Dick McKenny and Joe Dane, Bill Peacock, Sandy Nesbitt, Scott McGowan, Gene Mit- chell, Doug Rollins, Dwight Pensiero, Norm Pruell, Mark Bisgrove, Bill Barrett, John Lowry, Norm Michaud, Doug Taylor, Dennis Beaudoin, Bart Flanagan, Jack Boniface, and Dan Fortin. Last year marked the Dragons' final season of Class B competition--this fall Brunswick jumps to a Class A ranking. 132 i A -2 3 Q S 1 gg. SECOND ROW: Coach Billings, Dwight Pensiero, Frank Yanok, Dave Vassar, Romeo Marquis, Bob LeGendre, Jack Boniface, Pete Bachrach. Brunswick High's Dragons ended the 1964-65 basketball season successfully with a much improved 9-11 record. Six in ten games at home gave the Dragons their best record infive years. Despite the loss of six players due to graduation, Coach Gene Billing is looking forward to a good season next year. Departing seniors are Jack Boniface, Joe Bruening, Sandy Nesbitt, Dwight Penseiro, Steve Richardson, and Barry Venturoni. The returningjuniors are Pete Bach- rack, Louie Dye, Roger Gagnon, Dick Galland, Bob Le Gendre, Romeo Marquis, Dave Vasser, and Frank Yanok. The scoring was well balanced with Boniface, Le Gendre, and Gagnon all averaging in or nearly in double figures. Vassar and Nesbitt followed closely in the well rounded tally with Bach- rach, Dye, Yanok, Marquis, Gallant and Venturoni following. Opening the season rather slowly with two quick losses, the Dragons played .500 ball the rest of the way. Highlights of the campaign were victories over Westbrook, Portland, Morse, and Edward Little. After defeating Portland 55-54 in an exciting contest, the Dragons upset Edward Little 69-68. Later in the season against tournament bound Westbrook, acapacity crowd watched the Dragons jump to a quick lead and hold for a 76-63 upset, knocking the Blazers out of third place. Brunswick also defeated rival Morse High twice. It was the first time aBrunswick basket- ball team had beaten Morse since 1957. 134 391 M. A BHS VARSITY HOCKEY Brunswick High's hockey team concluded its initial season of varsity hockey competition on a promising note bywinning three of its last four games after waiting eleven games for its victory. The Dragons' outstanding achievement by far was their 2-1 triumph over Lewiston, a team that later went on to the state schoolboy hockey championships. That win enabled the pucksters to finish in fifth place in final league standings. The outlook for next season is not the best since Joe Dane, John Poulin, Gerry Healey-Ogden, and Ken Handley--all starters for Coach Roland Lallier this season--are seniors, but with ayear of varsity experience under their belts, the returnees hope to improve on a 3-11 record. 138 ,ml TRACK FIRST ROW: D.
