A V.. -3 V ,s t.- A ----'-' ,het . . ,V ' fp- .,,v- ' , -. -f.. - ' To the stu-dents of Brozawzsfvillc High School: In graduating from the High School you are going into a new country'-that of living your life as a citizen and not as a student depenglent upon the care of parents. In a new country, a man, must possess at least three virtues-honesty, courage and simplicity or singlcness of purpose. In this new country, char- acter is essentialg in the old, reputation is sufficient. In the new, they find what a man really isg in the old, he generally passes for what he resembles. You will soon be no longer in the old, so begin now to think and prepare for the new by making the most of the training in those fundamental principles of man- hood and womanhood with which you are constantly coming in contact in your school life. Honesty is the corner stone upon which the American nation has been built. In every walk of life the man who can be trusted to handle the affairs of others with the same precise honesty of action that he would his own is the one who pushes ahead to success. To deal with all men as you would like to have them deal with you constitutes the basic principle of honesty. Courage is one and the same thing everywhere. The firm- ness with which one stands upon the hopeless deck before the doomed ship goes down, the persistency with which a man claims that the right is best Whatever voices clamor for the wrong, the intelligence with which you think your own thought. straight. through the confusion of other thinking men-these are all at their root one and the same thing. One gracious and another stern, they are all made up, like the black coal and the sparkling diamond, of the same constituents. And there one thing more, which is simplicity or single- ness of purpose. The elaborateness of life makes cowards of us. You should choose some one thing in life which you are sure of and tie your life to that, and stand strong on it to buffet off your fears. Some one thing made sure of early in your life, kept clear through all obscuritye-that is what keeps life simpleg that is what keeps it fresh and never lets its bravery go out. --W. A.
