, ,l,g'1'lX-1.,XL,I5L, -4.L,.,'sN. .. .V - -- l l J' L .,,f.,141 COMMANDING OFFICER CDR Arcenio Alves, Jr. USN Commander Arcenio Alves Jr., was commissioned an En- sign in the United States Navy in December I956, after graduating from Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Prior to joining the Navy CDR Alves received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Southeastern Massachusetts University in l955. Since then, he has done graduate work at George Washington University and in the PACE Program. ln I968 he com- pleted the Post Graduate course of instruction at the Defense Intelligence School and has subsequently been designated an intelligence sub-specialistf Commander Alves' experiences in the Navy have been wide and varied. He has served as Com- munications!Operations Officer aboard the USS ZELIMA QAF 495: as Chief Engineer aboard the USS KEPPLER CDD 7655: as Executive OfficerfNavigator aboard the USS VITAL CMSO 4745, and as Executive Officer!Navigator aboard the USS FRED T. BERRY CDD 8585. Also, he com- manded the USS SEVECA QATF 9lj. Other tours of duty in the Navy for CDR Alves have included Destroyer School as a student, Bureau of Naval Personnel as a Systems Analyst, Staff of Commander in Chief, Pacific where he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, and, most recently, as a student at the Naval War College. Commander Alves and his wife, Ruby, have three daughters- Carolyn, Jennifer, and Rebecca.

D S ,P W HN 'E' DEDICATION This book is dedicated to that which can scarcely be illustrated in any book. lt is dedicated to the comradrie and Esprit de Corps of the ship's crew, to that indefinable spirit which drives a ship and its crew to great accomplishments. lt's a simple task to identify the rare ship which possesses this driving force for it possesses a can do attitude and a reputation for accomplishment. No matter how much the individual faces in the crowd change, or how frequent, varied, and difficult the committments of this ship, those things which must be done invariably get done. lt is a magic of sorts which unites a crew of dissimilar men in a close environment to cause a ship to take on a life of its own.
