The 133 members of the class selected John Flittie, president: Norma Lee, vice- president: Vivian jackson, secretary: Harriet Larson, treasurer: and Margie Mall, social chairman. XYe were well represented in all of the extra-curricular activities beside leading the li. li, S. honor roll. During this year we held two successful class parties. .Xt the beginning of our sophomore year, we elected George Drown, presi- dent: liarry Spillum, vice-president: Yivian jackson, secretary-treasurer: and Norma Lee, social chairman. Many members of the class participated in the operetta, 'fllelinka of .Xstrakhanf and the class organized a sophomore pep squad. XYe also had two class parties this year. .Xs juniors we entered whole-heartedly into the whirl of school activity. Ten junior boys made the squad football team, and one the A basketball. Yirginia Larson won a superior rating in the State Music Contest. Eleven juniors look part in the all-school play, The Melting Pot : and the junior play Anne of Green Gables was one of the most successful plays ever give he1'e. On .Xpril 23 we were hosts to the seniors at the annual junior-senior prom and banquet. The decorating theme carried out was a neptune or deep sea scene. In the spring campaign. Robert Yessey was elected president, and Harry Spillum vice-president of the student body for the coming year. The class officers for this year were George llrown, president: llarry Spillum, vice-president: llarriet Larson. secreta1'y-treasurer: Norma Lee, social chairman. Coming back as seniors in the fall of IQ38, we resolved to make this year the best. llarry Spillum was elected president: Norma Lee, vice-president: llarriet Larson, secretary-treasurer: and Virginia Ford, social chairman. Many senior boys participated in the A squad athletics. Our class was well represented in the three one-act plays given in the fall. Robert Yessey won a superior rating in the district poetry contest. The junior class entertained us at a very enjoyable banquet and dance in the spring. Senior activities in the late spring started with the class play on May 12. Our skip day at Sioux Falls on May 16 followed. liracluation week included the senior sermon on May 21, class night on May 24, and graduation on May 25. Forty-five students began the study of the question, Resolved: that the United States should establish an alliance with Great Britain. when the season opened early in December. This group was later cut to ten on the freshman and nine on the varsity squads. The varsity squad directed by B. Herdahl participated in seventy-one interscholastic debates and the freshman took part in twenty-eight. Marion Hanson, Margie Hubbard, Doris Schilling, and Robert Yessey carried the greater part of the varsity burden, representing Brookings High 43 School in the University, the Big Eight Conference, and the Divisional tourna- ments. The furthering of dramatics in lirookings lligh School is the purpose of the Dramatic Club. lfrom all reports the club under the direction of Miss lilizabeth W'eter has maintained a suc- cessful year. The club started the year with 23 members. Five new members were ad- mitted for their work in deelamatory contests. Sixteen more people were admitted after the school production of one-aet plays on December o. The junior number of activities. Three one-act plays sponsored by the Dramatic Club were: jazz and Nlinuetf' A Night at an Inn, and Thank You, Doctor. These proved to be a successful venture. The one-act play, The Wonder Hat, was presented for the high school as- sembly in October. The club invited its alumni of 1938 and the high school students to a costume dance given in january. For the purpose of stimulating interest in French life, customs, language and litereature the French Club was organ- ized. Membership is open to any student having studied one or more years of French. This year the organization had a membership of twenty-five. The hrst and very successful social highlight of this year was the French Club Sweater-Mixer Dance. Novel and outstanding programs featured the ex- cellent French movie, Marie Antion- ette, and the colored moving pictures of Rev. joseph Ewing's European tour. 47 Other programs consisted of French skits, musical selections. and short talks, which depicted in some way French life or people. Correspondence with French students proved interesting and helpful to both French and American students. Le Petit journal, is a French news- paper to which the club subscribedg it contains accounts of interesting French features and events. Harry Spillum was elected captain last spring. The 1938 track season began with four letter men returning: Captain Rih- hy, llehrencl, Oines, and Spillnm. These four boys composed the mile relay team which won in the state contest. 1. They participated in the following meets: Upper Sioux Valley, secondg Conference, sixth: Regional, firstg Dells, sixth: and State, eighth. At the close of the season the follow- ing boys received monograms: Behrend, llibhy, llillick, Billings, Crusinberry, Finn, ll. George Patterson won, making' twenty out of thirty free throws: Ivan Steen was second with eighteen out of thirty. The freshman basketball team coached lay Yirgil llell were successful in their season against Coach Sindherg's junior lligh School team by winning six and losing' two games. The Brook- ings chapter, having more than eighty active members, is acclaimed the largest in the state of South Dakota. National honors were given the chapter and with it a cash prize of S15 as a reward for carrying into completion a program featuring activities in super- vised farming, cooperation, community services, leadership, scholarship, and recreation, State recognition came to the judging teams by winning the sweepstakes Alpha 61 Zeta banner the fourth consecutive year. ln addition, the Sioux City Livestock Commissioners presented a loving cup to the livestock team for their first place winning in the Tri-State contest of last spring. Athletic events were started by the State golf and tennis tournaments and football games with Milbank and the l-'landreau Indians. Many high school students participated in the Passion Play held on the 28th and 29th. Assembly lll'Ug'l'2llllS included Swallow. the magician and the l'arkiuson Music Group. The lirst dance of the year was presented by the l reneh Club following the Madison football game on October 14. During the month we played Yankton, Vipestone, and Sioux Falls. Many students showed their loyalty by going to Sioux Falls and cheering' for the tealn. The freshmen showed that they were going to be an active class by holding the first party of the year. Over one thousand students were guests of Brookings at the :mnual South llakota lligh School Press Association held at State l'ollege on the 28th. The activities for the month of November were started by the preliminary declamation contest. and followed by a Northwest assembly, the .Dutch humorist. An unlucky football game with NVatertown was followed on November 11 by a vietory over lluron on our homecoming day. On the 18th the FFA father-son banquet was served by the llllllltdllilkillg department. Several members of the student eouneil went to Minneapolis l'or the Northwest Association of Student Councils held on the campus of the l'uiversity of Minnesota. 'Flianksgiring week found the teaehers attending the SIJHA convention at Mitchell. After the too-short TilllllkSglYlllg vacation, the athletic practice for basketball beg:m. Games with Flandreau, l'ipestoue. Madison, and Eastern High were played during Deeeinber. The All-School Play was sponsored by the Dramatic Club: the chorus presented a i'ill'lSllllZlS pageant in the .lunior High Sehool Auditorium. f'hristmas Yaeation began on the fist of illeeeniber. After two weeks of celebration, school was resumed on the sixth of January. During vacation, the Bobcats showed their lighting spirit by defeating the alumni for the tirst time sinee these games have been played. Basketball games were played at Mitchell, Madison, Watertown, and Yankton. The Dramatic Ulub Celebrity Dance was very successfully held the tirst week of our return to school. The debate season started in earnest with tournaments at Aberdeen, Mitchell, and Madison. Semester examinations on the 19th and :Both marked the end of the tirst half of this school yea r. CALENDAR An amateur eontest sponsored by the student eouneil, Wonders of Liquid Air, and the Alabama Jubilee Singers were a few of the assembly programs of the mouth. Basketball games with Huron. Yankton, and Sioux Falls, and a debate at NVatertown were activities participated in by most students. Tl1e Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs were entertained by the Homemaking and music departments at dinners. The Rotary Club sponsored a series of lectures on international aifairs including Major C. Douglas Booth. C. Canfield Cook, Mrs. Margaret Kaiser, and Dr. Allan D. Albert. The GAA Barn Dance, basketball games with Huron and lVatertown, and the State BH squad basketball tournament were outstanding events of Mareh. The junior class play, f'Laugh Clown.', and the divisional and state debate tournaments were held at our school. On April 1, the SSS held an April Fool Carnival Dance. Aetivities of the Agricultural Illld Holnemaking departments included the Smith'Hngl1es contest on the 24th and 25th. The sectional high school press conference was held with Brookings high school as hosts. The music contest and eoncert were given prior to the festival held at Mitchell on May 5. The outstanding social event of the year was given when the senior elass were guests of the juniors in a trip through Crystal Cave. This novel theme was carried out in the table decorations of white and silver with eaeh tourist receiving a travelogue as a program. The gymnasium was transformed with crystal formations :illumiued by colored spotlights. The month of May saw the seniors extremely busy with their graduation activities. On the 12th, the senior play, Spring Dance, was presented to a large and appreciative audience. The 1939 BOBCAT was issued to the school on the 15th, followed by the annual senior skip day to Sioux Falls the next day.
