Besides the Bobcat Day Dance, there have been three all- high school dances this year-the first on December 16, E when the Dramatic Club sponsored its second annual Christ- mas Dance. After the beginning of the second semester, the S. S. S. initiated a new form of entertainment-an all-high party, at which ther-e were cards and puzzles :besides dancing. A high school orchestra, under the leadership of Robert Mall, intro- duced itself at this party. The event Was the most successful all-school social gathering that had ever been held, s-o the 1 G. A. A. on March 25 changed its annual spring dance to a spring party. The girls worked hard to make that party the best, and they decorated the gym elaborately. The lighting was furnished by lights in the center of the flowers which lined the bleachers. The high school orchestra played for this, also. The attendance at dances has steadily increased this year which proves a growing interest in this form of amuse- ment. VARSITY FOOTBALL THE Bobcats started practice in September with thirteen lettermen. They opened the season against Garrets-on with an impressive 41-7 victory, which served notice to all schools in South Dakota that Brookings would be ranked at the top at the end of the seas-on. Playing Sioux Falls in the second game of the season the Bobcats were defeated 13-7, minus the services of three regulars most of the game. Flandreau was easily defeated the next week end 22-0, with three of the regulars yet lacking from the line-un. Still minus the complete line-up, the Bobcats were decisively beaten by Water- town the following week end. But again the Bobcats came back and showed their Never Let Up tradition by putting on a brilliant rally to tie the Flandreau Indians in the last minute of play by the count of 12-12. From then on the Bobcats hit their stride and thoroughly drubbed Madison and Yankton on successive week ends. Bobcat Day was looked forward to with the idea in mind of seeing the two strongest teams in the state battle for the Coffey Crown. However, bad weather caused cancellation of the game, very much to the disappointment of the team. At the end of the season James Scarlett, stellar guard, was elected honorary Captain .by his teammates and he was also given a guard position on the second team all-conference selections. Robert Montgomery, hard hitting fullback, and Ralph Lassen, the Bob- cat's driving center, were given h-onorable mention on All-State selections. The Bobcats occupied fifth place in the Conference Standings. Q uariler B SQUAD FOOTBALL THIRTYJSIX boys participated on the B football squad last fall. The purpose of the B squad is to prepare the boys for A squad compe- tition in future years. Due to this fact, most of their practice time is spent on the fundamentals of the game. This year they played three games, tieing Vol-ga, 0-03 defeating Pipestone, 6-0, and losing to V-Olga in a return game by a 1'2F0 score. The following boys were given awards for outstanding play: Arnie Green, J ames Lee, Lynn Shelp, Harry Hemmings-on tCaptainJ, Raymond Fricke, Walter Lassen, Thomas Gray, Jack McKee. UNORGAN I ZED SPORTS GOLF-Last year Brookings High School was very well represented in Golf. Lawrence Bartling, of -basket-ball fame, and Adolph Moritz were among the leading golfers in the state tournament. This spring these boys will no doubt do better due to more experience and practice. TENNIS-The other spring sport is under the supervision of a net star while in college, Mr. Lynott. Robert Flittie, Robert Lomfbard and George Getty seem to be the more experienced. However the school champion has not been determined. Brookings high school can proudly point to one of the best teams in the state and with- out doubt the best in the history of the school. With only two lost by graduation Coach Coffey had excellent material to start with, and they showed steady improvement throughout the season. Their fast accurate passing was a feature of the Bobcats play. Defen- sive play by Lassen and Thompson was excellent if not exceptional. Captain Finn was a power of strength on the defense, coupled with excellent pass-- ing made him stand out as the most consistent player -on the squad. Bart- ling, whose uncanny eye for the basket won him the title of Eagle-eye, was the leading scorer of the team. At center Coach Coffey had two men with much ability. Nesson, al- though handicapped in height was fast and clever and could be depended upon to play excellent ball, while Burandt, who developed rapidly, had plenty of size and was especially hard to stop under the basket for short shots. He was not out-jumped at the tip-off during the season. Speedy will be back next year. Montgomery, with lots of speed and weight and a good eye for the basket was always plenty of worry for the opposing de- fenses. Getty, an outstanding man on the team, was used at either forward or center. Steinborn and Searls played guard and had plenty of stuff to keep Lassen and Thompson on their toes in order to hold their positions. All of the above men played the required number of games to earn monograms. lf- 11111111 1111 111I-v-u11-11-- 1v11 -- 1 111111 1111v111v1111111l1u111 11111111 1 1 1 1un1 in i 55 l swf? -it The Bobcats won second place in the Eastern South Dakota Athletic Conference, winning six out of ten conference games, the same as the first place winner, but according to the Dickenson rating system were obliged to take second place. The District tournament was won by defeating Volga for the third time during the seas-on, 26-17. Watertown, Conference chamrpions, were defeated in the Region tour- nament finals at Watertown the following week 43-26. The Bobcats advanced to the semi-finals in the State Tournament by winning a sensational victory over Huron 32-25, after which they were picked as favorites of the tournament. The end of a history making season came with the defeat at the hands of Marion 28-30. Lawrence Bartling and Ralph Lassen were honored by being placed on the All-State team, while Lassen and Thompson were given first and second team rating respectively on the All-Conference teams. The B squad played a difficult schedule with inexperienced boys who made remarkable improvement as the season progressed. Mr. Horrigan deserves much credit for a fine piece of work. VARSITY TRACK HOPES for an excellent track team were high this spring as many of the boys who turn-ed in fine performances last season returned to improve their former records. Among them were Garnet Weterberg, in the hurdlesg Dan Finn in the middle distance runsg Cecil Sanderson, in the mile run: And-ers-on, Sorenson, and Behrend sprinters, and Lassen and Melcher in the weight events. These boys, along with new material, are upholding the standards of former Brookings High School teams. Last year's track t-eam walked off the field with regional h-onors by doubling the score over their nearest opponent. Albright, a sprinter, set a new record in the 220 yard dash at .23 flat, while Lassen hurled the discus 114 feet, 6 inches, to a n-ew Regional rec-ord. The following week-end the teaim went to the State meet, and were favored to give Sioux Falls much difficulty in winning the championship. In a bad day, the Bobcats t-ook the short end of the score and Sioux Falls thexlong end. At the meet, Loban took fourth in the pole vaultg Dan Finn, fifth in the half mile run, and Lassen won third in the shot put. However, in the conference track meet, the last meet of the season, the Bobcats ouclassed the Sioux Falls Warriors and the other conference teams, and won first honors. In this me-et, Buhn, an -outstanding miler, finished his career by setting a new conference record at 4 minutes and 40 seconds for the mile. The organization, under the leadership -of Miss Lucille Miller, was one of the most active in High School. Clever drills and yells were given at all the home games. As a part of their program the S. S. S. sponsored the selling of ltickets for the Salvation Army benefit show, an all-high school party, and a junior-senior basket social.. The uniforms worn by the -girls during performances were black skirts, red berets, and red sweat-shirts with black letters. At the end of the year sixteen junior girls were initiated into the society -to carry on the activities of the S. S. Last spring, in the state typing meet, Delia Larson received ff, loving cup for placing in cllass B beginning typing and Mar- garet Gaughran placed second in the State Bookkeeping contest, narrowly missing first place by one point. Although there were no state contests this year, under the direction of lVIr. Zimmerman and Miss Crossland several contests were conducted in the department and with neighboring towns. The shorthand I classes also entered a contest sponsored by the American Lead Pencil Company of Hoboken, New Jersey. The typing I classes challenged the typing II classes to a contest in April. William Bonell, a typing I student won first place in individual ratings with a rate of 61 words per minuteg Daphne Klug CID, second with 51.8 words per minuteg Janie Jerman CID, third with 45.56 words per minute. The typing II team won by a margin of a little over -one word a minute. This spring the group was divided into two gr-oups: One, the first glee clubg and the other a music class. In the fall of last year the girls helped to produce successfully the operetta, Hulda of Holland. They are under the very capable direction of Miss Willa McClain. The following remained in the first glee club: Soprano I-Viola Hanson, Myrtle Anderson, Dorothy Enright, Lucille Fry, Ruth Lightner, Leona Hickman, Vaughn Dripps, and Irene Jensen. Soprano II-Ro-berta Applegate, Delpha Marvin, Helen Mall, and Natalie Klug. Alto I-Marguerite Warner, Daphne Klug, Evelyn Searls, Vivian Fish and Lenore Graves. This has been our object in putting out an annual. The school year of 1932 and 1933 is nearly past and can never be brought back.
