The year 1940 marked the inception of an idea and a dream; the year 1958-1959 has seen that idea translated into a gracious and functional building, a well trained, effective faculty, and a student body of two hundred and ten. But the thing we cherish most, the feeling that each of us belongs to Brooke Hill in much the same way that we belong to our families, has not been translated or changed. We think it shines out of every page of this book, which will be to each of you a reminder of that warm, tangible relationship. DEDICATION We. the Seniors of 1959 dedicate this issue of the Brooklet to our teacher and friend. CLARICE VAN HOOK LOCKE Through her insistence on accuracy and knowledge of facts, she has taught us the importance of truth and has encouraged us to search untiringly for that truth. For this and for her gentle warmth and understanding we thank her. She has given us a rich foundation on which to build our lives. BOARD OF TRUSTEES TERM EXPIRING IN 1959 Mr. J. H. Bumum Mr. J. H. I seemed to hear the voice of a student of other years saying, “The new building will be wonderful, but The Spirit is the tiling that counts.” “What is this Spirit?” I asked, and the answer came back----- “The Spirit of Brooke Hill is that intangible something continuing to live in its graduates, which promotes scholarship, leadership, and pride in a job welldone. Who knows its ingredients? Love and truth are surely the most important ones. Diligence in work, adherence to principle, devotion to duty, unselfishness and sportsmanship, are all included in its character.” I proudly salute you, the Graduates of 1959, and commend to you The Spirit of Brooke Hill THE FACULTY SEATED, Left to Right: Miss Ordway, Mrs. Bumgartner, Mrs. Wheeler, Mrs. Varnell, Mile.
