COIVIIVIANDING OFFICER CDR R. G. ZELLER R. Guy ZELLER was born July 28, 1937, in Olney, Illinois. He was commissioned Ensign, U.S. Navy, on February 1960, under the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program, after receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Illinois. He reported to the USS WILKINSON QDL 51 at Long Beach, California, in March 1960 and served as First Lieutenant, Gunnery Assistant, and Communications Officer. Upon graduating in Class Three from Naval Destroyer School in Newport, Rhode Island, in February 1963, he reported to the USS KENNETH D. BAILEY QDDR 7131, operating out of Mayport, Florida, and served subsequently as Engineering Officer and Operations Officer. Commander ZELLER attended the U.S. Naval Post-graduate School in Monterey, California, from June 1965 to June 1967, receiving a Master of Science degree in Operations Research and Systems Analysis. He was assigned in July 1967 to the U.S. Navy Research and Development Unit in Vietnam to serve as Project Officer and Operations analyst. In August 1968, he reported aboard the USS JOHN W. THOMASON QDD 7601 for duty as Executive Officer. His commands have included USS JOHN WILLIS QDE 10271, homeported in Newport, R.l., from February 1970 until March 1971, and the USS FURSE CDD 8821, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, from May 1971 until July 1972. He has since served with the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations QOP 961 and as Military Assistant to the Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense. He has been the Commanding Officer of BROOKE since January 1977.
