BROOKE's record in WESTPAC 77 was outstanding - every single commitment - on time. But a ship without spirit is boilers, guns and little else. The BROOKE's spirit- her very soul - was the men who manned her through those months - the Engineers who kept her steaming, the Operations Specialists who told her where and why, the Quartermasters who ensured she got there safely and on time. She was all these and many more - Cooks, Yeomen, Pilots - everyone vital to the independent operation of the ocean escort named BROOKE. She was men, and in some cases, mere boys. For seven months the men who had been there many times before continued their steady, accustomed and excellent performance. The boys on their first great adventure learned their trade, saw half the world and grew a great deal. It was they, men and boys, who were the USS BROOKE during the Oriental Odyssey of WESTPAC 77. This journal is dedicated to them. ' f L.,
