WHISLER, Jr. Lieutenant Commander Glen E. WHISLER, Jr. was born in Morgantown, West Virginia on 4 July 1939. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1962 and was commissioned Ensign from the Naval OCS at Newport, R.I. on 26 October 1962. Upon commissioning, he served as CIC Surface and Air Watch Officer on USS INDEPENDENCE CCVA-625. He was then assigned to U.S. Naval Destroyer School and upon graduation served as Weapons Officer in USS DAMATO CDD-8711. He then reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel and assumed duties in the Surface Junior Officer Assign- ment Section. Following his tour in BUPERS, LCDR WHISLER went to the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, R.l. While at the War College he participated in the Univ. of R.I. cooperative degree program and was awarded a Master of Science Degree in Marine Affairs in June 1972. He reported on board the USS BRONSTEIN 6 Sept. 1972. LCDR WHISLER left USS BRONSTEIN 17 December 73, and reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, D.C. CHANGE OF COMMAN 17 December 1974, LCDR Michael H. LOY relieved LCDR Glenn E. WHISLER as Commanding Officer at Apra Harbor, Guam. COMMANDI G OFFICER 17 December 1974- Lieutenant Commander Michael H. LOY Lieutenant Commander Michael H. LOY was born in Ventura, California on 20 September 1940. He attended the University of Colorado, graduated from Tulane University and was commissioned Ensign from the Naval Officer Candidate School at Newport, Rhode Island on 22 November 1963. Upon commissioning, he served as Engineer Of- ficer in USS FRANK KNOX QDDR-7423. In June 1966 he was assigned to U. S. Naval Destroyer School and upon graduation served as Weapons Officer in USS INGERSOLL CDD-6523. He subsequently served as Commanding Officer, USS WHIPPORWILL CMSC- 2075, and was awarded a Master of Science degree in Management at the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School, and a Master of Science Degree in Political Science from Auburn University. He graduated from the Air Force Command and Staff College in June 1971 and was subsequently assigned as Advisor to the Navy of the Republic of South Vietnam. He reported on board the USS BRONSTEIN, 17 December 1974. Among Lieutenant Commander LOY,s decorations are the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V , the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Cam- paign Medal with seven stars and the Vietnam Service Medal. Lieutenant Commander LOY is married to the former Marta Soules of Mexico City, and resides in Delmar, California. EXECUTIVE OFFICER 7 January 1973- Lieutenant David W. MATTIS LT David W. MATTIS is a native of Erie, Penn- sylvania. After enlisting in the Navy in 1961, LT MAT- TIS received any appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated in 1966. Upon graduation, LT MATTIS served for two years aboard the USS LYMON K. SWENSON QDD- 7291 as First Lieutenant, Navigator, and Dash Officer. In 1968, LT MATTIS attended Destroyer School in Newport, Rhode Island and subsequently was assigned as Weapons Officer aboard USS ROBERT K. HUN- TINGTON CDD-781J.LT MATTIS then attended Monterey U.S. Naval Post Graduate School for two years and received a M.S. degree in Operations Research in 1972. WEAPONS DEPARTMENT, under the direction of LT Moran, Jr., consists of lst Division, 2nd Division, AS' Division, and TA Division. , First Division comprised of Boatswains mates are responsi- ble for maintaining the ship's exterior paint job, ship's boat, and are involved in all underway-evolutions frefueling, rear- ming, provisioning of food and stores, and a most important evolution at sea . . . the transfer and receipt of maill. Their division officer LTJ G Harris will be relieved by ENS Easley when he receives orders to 2nd Marine Division. Second and TA Divisions under the direction of CWO3 Wilke are com- prised of Gunners mates, Firecontrol technicians and Oceanographic technicians. They are responsible for the ship's guns, fire control radar, and surveillance system. AS Division comprised of Sonar technicians, ASROG Gunners mates, and Torpedomen, maintain the ship's anti-submarine warfare systems. Their division officer, LTJG Allison, after receiving orders to Surface Warfare Officers School will be relieved by ENS Adamitis. There are five divisions comprising the SUPPLY Department with each divi- sion performing a particular service. Ship's Service Division provides laundry, barbershop, and ship's store services. On this deployment, numerous foreign merchandise was ordered through the ship's store. The Food Service Division feeds the crew with well-balanced meals three times a day and had several Hflightdeck cookout barbeques consisting of steaks, hotdogs, hamburgers and other goodies. Remember the surf and turfi' dinner after the departure of Mombasa?'! The Storekeeper Division has the function of ordering, receipting, accounting, and stowing of all consumable and repair part items required. The Stewart Division provides services to the wardroom mess and officers country. The Disbursing Division handles the pay records of the officers and crew and accounts for all types of disbursements. This WESTPAC cruise proved that the SUPPLY Depart- ment contributed 'greatly to the image of being the little ship with a bi-g heartfi. . OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT is composed of the CAN DOH men. With long, hard working hours inport and port and starboard watches underway, they performed so admirably, that they received KUDO'S for their superlative efforts from almost every commander they operated with. At the end of the cruise, the OPERATIONS Department was awarded for the Operation's E for excellence and played a major role in win- ning the Squadron Battle efficiency E , Always in the know and right up front with TASS operations, these dedicated men fQuartermasters, Electronic Technicians, Operation Specialists, Electronic Warfare Technicians, Radiomen and Signalmenlb did a job to be proud of.
