School dances were once again popular, extra curricular activities. Some of the most popular dances were the MORP dance (prom spelled backwards), the student council sponsored summer dance, the yearbook signing dance sponsored by the yearbook staff and the Spanish Club sponsored Valentine’s dance. Middle school students also enjoyed dances. Among their favorites was the Halloween dance which most students attended while wearing costumes. Gilda Chavez arrived in Broken Bow prior to the school year. Unlike many foreign exchange students, Gilda was aware of the community and it’s customs. Gilda's older sister, Anna, had been an exchange student in Broken Bow a year earlier. She makes her home in Mexico. Sune Kehlet from Denmark also arrived in Broken Bow during the first semester. While in the states Sune also enjoyed traveling to Chicago, IL and various parts of California. Two of his favorite souvenirs from the Broken Bow area were an old cowboy hat and a pair of cowboy boots. The last foreign exchange student to arrive at BBHS during the first semester was Javier Gonzales. Javier came to Broken Bow from Spain. While attending BBHS Javier was active in several clubs and was a member of the cross country team. The last exchange student to arrive was Tom Hodgson. Tom’s home is in Australia. Tom was an active member of the musical cast his first semester at BBHS. Unlike the other exchange students that made Broken Bow their home during the 1986-87 school year, Tom remained in Broken Bow until January of 1988. Other activites for the week included the annual hall decoration competition. The freshmen were included in the hall decoration contest for the second time. For some, weekends are a time to catch up on housework and cleaning that messy room. For others, it’s a chance to earn extra money for college or a car. It also occurred to the staff that friends help to make weekends more fun, and the weekdays bearable. Below is a collection of friends enjoying weekend activities. 14...Weekends and Friends Special events add to a jammin’ — year — Throughout the school year, many events took place to make the year more exciting. Biology classes disected minks and toured the Omaha Medical Center. The Future Homemakers of America Chapter traveled to Oklahoma City to attend its first National Cluster Meeting. The home economics department field tested the new curriculum that was developed for the state. Along with the new curriculum a play school was held in the family living class and the flour sack babies were once again assigned. Mrs. Stutzman’s english class had a Broken Bow resident from India audit the class. The physics department did the monkey experiment and the Industrial technology department worked with robotics. Business success, theme of musical The title for this years all-school musical held May 8th and 9th was “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Lead characters were Wendy Province and Jerry Stithem playing the roles of Rosemary Pilkington and J. Pierpont Finch respectively. A large number of students participated in the musical, making the cast one of the largest in the past few years. Don Davis was director and Lance Bristol was music coordinator. Doreen McIntosh served as the assistant to the director. “It was great being part of the musical cast. We had lots of fun. I especially remember the time when I missed my cue and put everybody else on stage in big trouble. I wound up on stage without shoes on.” Gilda Chavez ‘87’ ABOVE: Fellow office workers give Rosemary advice on men. (lett to right Amy Woodward. Wendy Province. Carta Haller. With eveyone’s support within the coop, a succcesful year was completed. Students receive honors Throughout the year many students work hard to maintain high grade point averages. The motivation to receive high grades is different for each student. Whatever the motivation, the rewards may sometimes end with the receipt of a scholarship. Teachers Teachers have unusual hobbies Many students often do not realize that their teachers really are human” and do not expect their teachers to have hobbies or interests outside of the school world. Our staff decided that we would like to put an end to this myth. The teachers were polled on the topic of hobbies and interests outside of the school. The following is a list of BBHS teacher hobbies. Publishing Company of Marceline, Missouri. We would like to give a big thank you to Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce for supporting the yearbook, and to the Custer County Chief for putting up with us over the school year and MOST of the summer. Though always busy, we seemed to find time for doughnut and pizza runs, a slumber party at the school, and we always managed to eat everything Miss Houdek put in front of us. We, the seniors of the annual staff, leave you with a fond farewell. We hope that you treasurer all the memories that have been created over the past year, and that you may create and enjoy many more.
