EVENTS FROM A SHIP’S LOG We would hardly have called ourselves “tots” but neither were we grown ups. Yes, that was 11 years ago in September 1941. Twenty small bashful, and yet wide awake intelligent boys and girls entering the spacious, beautiful harbor of Broadway High School. While struggling with our A B C’s under Mrs. Louise Minnich, we hardly realized that the golden harbor in which we were anchored meant eleven years of hard, toilsome, and rough sailing. Of our crew of 20, only 7 of us have remained true shipmates through the long voyage and hardship bestowed upon us in the form of education. Five of us, Nancv McWilliams, Loretta Reamer, Ellen Ritchie, Louise Showalter, and Carolyn Wampler were darkeyed, funny built, wavy and straight haired, giggling girls. Our other two shipmates, Delaney Blaine and Don Holsinger were blush¬ ing, grinning, bashful, gawky boys, all dressed up in new pants and suspenders with their greatest ambition to be a “Marble Sea King” (Ruler of Girls). During our ship’s first course we made three short stops and picked up 3 more of our present B. H. S. crew. Through the port holes we see the islands of Tenth Legion, Tampa, Florida, and Linville-Edom where they once were anchored. After seven tough years of fighting, many gales and high seas we overtook and captured three brutal pirate ships, “Leadin’, Ritin’, and Rithmatic”. Looking back through our ship’s log we find that we conquered other ob¬ stacles that might have stood in our way and hindered our advancement if deep study would not have been given to them. Among these were the passing through the “Isthmus of the Multiplication Tables” and the “Straits of Long Division and Geography”. With these finally not giving us any more trouble we turned our thoughts and dreams to a permanent settlement located somewhere in the Eastern part of Broadway. To have a settlement we realized we must soon stop and pick up more ship¬ mates and plenty of supplies. In the year 1949 we succeeded in getting 18 crew members from Tenth Legion, Cootes Store, Lacey Springs, Genoa, Timberville, Fulks Run, Orebaugh, and Singers Glen. Our Co-Captains were Miss Tressie V. Myers, and Mrs. Cecil Hartman. Because some of our shipmates were getting up in age we decided it was time to draw up our sails and settle down pronto. This we did in the lovely spot of a densely populated locality of Broadway. We stayed here for the remaining three years and really enjoyed our chosen spot with few interruptions. In 1951 we were joined by 3 islanders from Bergton and one foreigner from Chicago, Illinois. Time passed rapidly and before we realized it a bright September morning dawned and a new voyage year had begun where we could really view our present goals. Most of us were promoted to the rank of “Seniors” a high position which takes a lot of time and work to attain. Now that we are entering the harbor “Diploma” we are realizing how happy our journey has been and we hope the incoming “Seniors” will enjoy theirs as much as we did. 4 ' hus ends the voyage history of the Class of 1952.
