IE ITU U J r m 1949 PUBLISHED ANNUALLY BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF BROADWAY HIGH SCHOOL BROADWAY. VIRGINIA Editor LOIS MAY Business Manager BETTY LOU FIKE VOLUME XIV ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS GRADES ADVERTISEMENTS Each spring many young people leave Broadway High School to take their places in an adult world. Their names have been left on the school ' s history as their footprints have been left in its halls. In this book we have tried to preserve a few of these footprints for you. May these memories remind you of many happy school days. We, the Senior Class of 1949 wish to dedicate this volume of The REFLECTOR to MISS MINNIE MAY who has been loyal, patient, co-operative, and a friend to all the students; who has sacrificed self-interest for others; and who has given much of her time for the better¬ ment and progress of our school. MR. J. FRANK HILLYARD PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE: Believe in yourself with all your might. That is, believe that your destiny is inside of you, that there is a power within you which, if awakened, aroused, developed, and matched with honest effort, will not only make a noble man or woman of you, but will also make you successful and happy. Item III-—To the individuals listed below, we leave these tantalizing tidbits of personal glory! To Dolly Armentrout, I, Shirley Borror, will my desk just inside the door of the Senior Room, with hopes that she can “grin ’n bear” the accumulation of miscellaneous articles always placed thereon. The years seem long ago when we, 76 strong, climbed two flights of stairs to the Freshman Girls’ and Freshman Boys’ Rooms. Enthusiasm ran high and we enjoyed our first year in high school under the guidance of Miss Dorothy Trumbo and Mrs. Harold Dellinger, our class sponsors. For our officers in this year of innocence and bliss we chose Betty Fike, President; George Trumbo, Vice Presi¬ dent; Alta Sue Turner, Secretary; Yvonne Simmers, Treasurer. In 1946 we took our second step toward the halls of knowledge and fame as Sophomores. We enjoyed our role as students, under the leadership of our advisor, Mrs. Fahrney. We began taking more interest in extra-curricular activities, lead¬ ing all classes in various drives. At the end of the year we found ourselves pass¬ ing into the Junior Class. Our high school careers were half over but we were all positive that the first half had been a big success. We look upon the term 1947-48 with pride and satisfaction. Now we were “upper classmen”. During the year we were active in the band, glee club, and literary activities. As the Annual Junior Play we presented, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” with Miss Lester, our sponsor, as director and Miss Myers as assistant director. We also think of the joy and excitement we received from giv¬ ing the Senior Class of ’48 a banquet, which is an annual affair. We are Seniors. We have entered into the last and most important of our four high school years, with Mr. Phillips as our advisor. We presented as our class play, “Lena Rivers” with Miss May as director and Miss Trumbo assisting her. We will be glad to graduate but we shall look back over the years spent in Broadway High School with pleasure. As we go forth to broader fields of endeavor and to greater opportunities for self- improvement and service, we know that our teachers and principal will al¬ ways have for us a feeling of sympathet ic understanding. We are grateful to them for all that they have done for us and our wish is that they may never be disap¬ pointed in us. Harold Roller JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS JOHNNIE HUFFMAN . FOUISE ROFEER. Printing Pays Us Only When It Pays You! McClure Printing Company THE RUNNELS PRESS COLLEGE ANNUALS AND CATALOGS.FINE ADVERTISING PRINTING 19 West Frederick St. Phone 605 Staunton, Virginia Sometimes it is the nature of a craft to create an unbreakable tie between itself and the worker in that field, a heart attachment equal to lifetime devotion. One familiar example is PRINTING. Once editor, once compositor, or press¬ man catches the spirit of the shop, the spell is seldom broken. Like the odor of a camp fire, or a whiff of salt air, the beloved tang of printer’s ink, symboli¬ cal of a great profession, gets into your heart and soul. School Annuals, Magazines, Newspapers and Special Printing, all smack of it. It is an invisible link that binds all intelligence together. It is the stimulus for creation in business or romance. This craftsmanship, this devotion to service and alert¬ ness to business needs, has nourished and developed an enormous industrial vitality, and whichever way the course of the future runs, the printer will always find himself able to adapt his helpfulness to new opportunity.
