SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY On June 8, 1954, Paul and I were in the Hawaiian Islands looking for Gen. Wellington Z. Myers. We could not find him, so one of the boys told us to look through the “Far Sight Seeing Machine”. When we found him, he asked about the class of 1944, so we all took a look and here is what we saw. Ava Nell Brock is now a concert pianist, living in New York City. She is, at this moment, giving a concert in the second largest city in the world, Broadway, Virginia. Production, “Princess Tibeta.” The gala premier is just starting. Frances Roller is teaching the kindergarten tots at Broadway, the tricks she learned in high school. Johnnie Long is living at Turley Town. He’s in partnership now, you know. A fleet of trucks numbering 500, are operating out of Broadway with Merlin Turner as owner. Jr. Fitzwater has completed his first great task in electrical engineer¬ ing. He has illuminated the street from his home to the cottage. Bergton is a booming field of agriculture with the applied principles of scientific farming introduced by Owen Stultz. The Brooklyn Dodgers just won the pennant from New York Yankees. Nothing of interest had been found until Sir Clarence Phillips, XX, the leader of the party, overturned a large stone which concealed a tin box. The inscription on this box read, Freshman Class of !944 . This is strange, he remarked, there must have been a school here. Bring the file and let’s open the box.” Upon opening the box his assistant withdrew several sheets of fold¬ ed paper. Listen! he commanded and began to read from the aged paper. FRESHMAN LOG On September 13th, 1943, seventy excited Freshmen crowded the halls of dear old B. H. S., and began their first year of high school under the direction of Mrs. Kline and Mrs. Wampler, who, however, left us before mid-term and were replaced by Miss Arbogast and Miss Fawley . A few weeks later the following class officers were chosen: Pres¬ ident, Joan Allebaugh; Vice-President, Jack Mason; Secretary, Arnett May; Treasurer, Earle Fike. Not only has our class held a high position in numer¬ ous drives, but we have also contributed both baseball and basketball players to the field of sports. In addition there are five band members and seven glee club members in our class. What do we Freshies like? Well, you guessed it. The girls are wild about Sinatra, chocolates, and roses, while the boys stick to the ever popular sports. Lastly, we extend our best wishes for happiness and success to all. Signed, FRESHMAN CLASS After removing a roll, some pictures and other similar articles, Sir Clarence said, ' ' Well, that is the last in the box. Come, let’s go back to camp and file these articles. They will be valuable additions to our collect- • ) ion. So the party tramped off over the red brick and stone fragments, over the green fields and back to camp. POST GRADUATES Edna Mae Clutteur Geraldine Hoover June Mooroaw Everette Driver Evelyn McWilliams We are the faithful five to good old B. H. S. Even though we grad¬ uated last year we couldn’t think of leaving our school days behind. When September rolled around we gathered our books, pencils, etc., and came back to spend another year at our Alma Mater. We started our twelfth year at B. H. S. with six members, but inside of two months we had lost two of them. Lucille Mathais left us to work at Timberville and Garnett Turner was called into the Navy. Although we were sorry to lose those memb?rs, we have tried to carry on without them. In November, we elected our class officers. They are as follows: Pres¬ ident, June Moomaw; Vice President, Geraldine Hoover; Secretary, Evelyn McWilliams; Treasurer, Edna Mae Clutteur. At the beginning of the second semester, Everette Driver became a member of our class. The girls are all taking a business course while Everette is taking subjects that will benefit him when he is called into the Armed Forces. We give all the aid we can to our teachers and classmates, and assist in the many drives the school sponsors. We owe much of our success and happ¬ iness to our home-room teacher, Miss May. We sincerely hope that those who follow us will find their post graduate year as happy and successful we, the post graduates of 1943-44, have. as AUTOGRAPHS I ACTIVITIES MASSAMUTIH REGIONAL IlliRAfe) Hwriiaubwy, fA 22B01 B. In the fall of 1934, Miss Katherine Wilson organized a band in the Broadway School. At first the band consisted of only a few members to whom she gave pri¬ vate instruction. In 1935, Mrs. Gerald Finney and Mr. Eddie Branner directed the band which at that time was composed of twenty-one members. At the Annual Rockingham Turkey Festival, 1939-40-41, they made a good showing and won several prizes. In 1941, the band made their first appearance in their new blue and white uniforms. Interest has increased in this organization, bringing the total membership to forty. MIXED CHORUS The B. H. S. Glee Club of 1943-44, has enjoyed a full year of singing, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week, under the direction of the exper¬ ienced leader, Mr. Joe” Miller. Since no member of the faculty felt fitted for the task of directing the Glee Club, Mr. Miller was kind enough to take time from his lunch hour to come to direct it. The Glee Club this year consisted of 44 members, 12 boys and 32 girls. At Christmas, the mixed chorus gave a program of appropriate music which was enjoyed by the many parents and friends who attended. The Glee Club also sang several numbers in Chapel at Christmas and ex¬ pect to do so at Easter. The Glee Club and Band rendered music for their annual Spring Concert on March 23. Officers chosen by the members of the choral club of B. H. S. are as follows: President, Harold 7 rumbo; Vice-President, Ruth Thompson; Secretrary, June Moomaw; Treasurer, Jackie Brown. 1st. VICTORY CORPS What is the Victory Corps? We are a group of students organized to do, to the best of our ability, our duties toward the war effort. In view of the many projects, campaigns, etc., which are necessary in keeping abreast with the war effort, we conducted tin, fats, paper, nylon and silk scrap drives. Bearing in mind that it is necessary for our armed forces to be well equipped, we did an excellent piece of work in purchasing and selling War Bonds and Stamps for this cause. This year we have thus far sponsored fats, paper, and tin scrap drives under the leadership and advice of the faculty members, Mr. Phillips, Miss Arbogast and Mrs. Fahrney, as well as student leadership of our president, Betty Wilson; Vice-president, D. W. Pawley; Secretary, Audrey Hawkins; and Treasurer, Jr. Fitzwater. In the future we shall endeavor to continue doing our small part in the war effort. 1st ROW - - C. Kline, D. Fawley, A. Hawkins, B.
