Have you gotten your ballet shoes for dance class? Are you going to the G2 concert? I saw the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra last night! I had to work all weekend! Let ' s party! There isn ' t a swim team. We don ' t have a swimming pool, unless you count the park- ing lot when it rains! Hey, we are, we are the Rockets — Whoosh! So right on! Look! There ' s a freshman! Nuggie time! Excuse me. Could you tell me where 1 can buy an elevator pass? The ceiling fell in my second period class. The workmen have begun the construction for the walls of the new gymnasium. What do you think of the new James Bond, Timothy Hutton? Christ Church Cathedral is showing the play ' Murder in the Cathedral ' . My nose itches from the smell of the saw dust in shop. Who broke their bottle of ' Ralph Lauren, Polo ' cologne in the hallway? A bright collage of colors and personalities, Rockets bask in the September sun at the homecoming pep rally. 2 Opening Relaxing against his cherry-red sports car, Brad Kas- senbrock, senior, prepares to pop a sky-blue balloon. Oblivious to the sounds of traffic on Broad Ripple Avenue, Kelshana White, freshman, practices her flute. A Bretonne woman, wearing a coiffe, the traditional headdress worn by lace- makers, poses with David Blackwell. senior, who summered in France. Tom Degan and Craig Blanchet, soph omores, perfect their hackey sack skills on one of the last weekends of summer. 4 Summer Weekends Summer Weekends 5 Their angelic smiles betraying their devilish thoughts, seniors James Fox, Don Crittendon and Erin Shipley dare the photographer to make their day. I got an A on my physics test! I flunked gym! Who ordered the pepperoni pizza in govern- ment today? Why is the gravy on the mashed potatoes blue? Being yourself. That is all it takes to be a part of Broad Ripple. The halls are crowded with personalities, each one different from the other. Broad Ripple is a mixture of ideas, a melting pot of individuals. Students ' per- sonalities range across the spectrum, rarely existing in absolutes but instead a combina- tion of traits. There are those who are ath- letes and those who are geniuses; those who perform and those who watch; those who help and those in need; and those who wear black ties and those who wear blue jeans. A striking profile in the brick lecture room, Amy Benningfield, senior, is caught in a pensive mood. Seniors Melody McClendon and Catherine Starkey sign in to win on the banner outside the attendance office. 6 Opening The expression of Peter Handley. sophomore, seems to hint that his luncheon fare is not haute cuisine. The human pretzel, Russ Johnson, senior, gets all tied up in government. Micheal Roldman. senior, and Brian Wilson, junior, toot their trumpets at the pep session. In perfect formation, varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders display their spirit for homecoming fans. O Homecoming German Club members Caitlin O ' Hara. Paul Mullin and Deron Overpeck, sen- iors, gather around the winning float. Bryan Madden and Debbie Wynn, sen- iors and 1987 Homecoming King and Queen, pose royally. Homecoming Spirit Takes Off As the team danced and the band jammed, BRHS fans got ready for the Homecoming game at the afternoon pep ral- ly. An entire week of fun pre- ceded the game. The Student Council select- ed certain events for the week, with each day set aside for a different theme. Monday students kicked off the week with toga day. Stu- dents could be Greeks for a day wearing a sheet with clothing and underneath. Tuesday was ' 50s and ' 60s day, a chance for everyone to dig through their parents ' clos- ets. Some students didn ' t need to search for an outfit — they dress like hippies everyday. Wednesday was clashing col- ors day, when throughout the halls one could see fun combi- nations of yellow, fuchsia and khaki. Thursday was turnabout day, when boys dressed as girls and vice versa. It was amazing to see how many closet trans- vestites we have at BRHS. Friday students finished the week with a full display of spir- it by dressing in black and orange. Classes competed in decorat- ing the hallways Thursday eve- ning. The freshmen decorated the hall by the cafeteria; sopho- mores, grand central; juniors, the art hall; and seniors, the hall in front of the attendance office. The senior hall won the contest. The pep session was during seventh period Friday. The band played El Tigre and danced to Herb ' s Funktion. Coach Haynes gave encourag- ing words, and the cheerleaders showed their stuff. The team had even prepared a shuffle- dance for the fans. Following the pep session clubs lined up for the annual Homecoming parade. The floats were decorated with the motto of Rust the Knights, referring to the Arlington Knights, our opponents for the game. The floats ranged from the limosine rented by the Spanish Club to the barren black coffin on a boat carrier made by the German Club, which won in the float competition. The ROTC marched in full uniform, and the band played Stand By Me, Shake Down and Respect Yourself. At 7:30 p.m. the game be- gan. The bleachers were full of eager students, parents and alumni. As half time ap- proached, king and queen can- didates gathered to be present- ed and the band got positioned in marching formation. The show began and as king and queen candidates were named cheers exploded from the stands. Debbie Wynn, of Spanish Club, was crowned 1987 Homecoming Queen, and Bryan Madden, King. The game continued, and in the last two minutes Arlington scored, taking a close 21-20 win. The Homecoming Spirit was not lost with the game. Stu- dents danced the night away at the annual Homecoming Dance, held in the cafeteria af- ter the game. Caroline Rees Seniors sport black and orange before the pep rally for the big game. Homecoming 9 Village Vibes Broad Ripple High School is diverse in several ways — in its students, its faculty, and, espe daily, in its surroundings — Broad Ripple Village. BRHS is one of the few high schools in Indianapolis located in such a thriving business community. And this commu- nity has a variety to offer. The Village is like a city con- densed into a small area. It ' s a city within a city. It has every thing from restaurants to gift- shops to its own grocery store. It also has a fire station, a park, and a library. But the Village also offers the more out-of-the-ordinary places, such as a restaurant which specializes in Indian cui- sine, a used record store, and a shop specializing in customized clothing. Jeff Berman, owner of Baz- beaux Pizza, said that the Vil- lage has a slower pace com- pared to other areas of Indianapolis. He also said, There ' s a constant flow of youth, which keeps it alive. The Village is a hang-out for many BR students. According M. Nicolini to Kali Johnson, senior, one of her favorite places to hang out at is Cafe Espresso, a restau rant that caters to the serious coffee drinker. But the Village also serves as an ideal place of employment for many BR stu- dents. According to Wallace Mac- Arthur, sales person at The Vil- lage Peddlars, the Village is friendlier than other areas. We get a lot of repeat business. In summing up the Village, Judy Cassell, senior, said, You ' ve got everything in Rip- V« pie. All kinds of people. Note V  just the yups or the dinks or thex J preps or the punks; but all of ; ' em! David Black well Fire engine 32 rolls out of the Village fire station to fight flames once again. Broad Ripple Vil- lage has an intimate atmosphere, very ar- tistic. It ' s the melt- ing pot of Indiana- polis. — Debra Berman Store owner Verve Heather O ' Sullivan, senior, and Mer- edith Emmons, junior, show their spirit during the annual Homecoming Parade, which passes through the Village. And BRHS hosted several foreign exchange stu- dents form around the world. American Field Service (AFS) is an organization that sponsors several foreign ex- change students each year at BRHS. The club hosted several activities this past year, includ- ing a short-term exchange, a bus stop program, which al- lowed students to travel to dif- ferent cities, a food sale, and a chili supper. French club had an extreme- ly active year. Members partici- pated in several activities such as the traditional Fondue Party, going to Z Bistro for the fine French cuisine, and a Christ- mas party, which included car- oling in local neighborhoods, Members also celebrated Mardi Gras and went to Quebec dur- ing spring break. German club also took part in several activities. Members baked goodies in preparation for their celebration of the St. Nicholas party. And they also raised funds for the annual King ' s Island trip, which was taken towards the end of the year. Activities were planned throughout the year for Latin club. These activities included a November hayride, a ski trip, and a trip to Chicago. Members also participated in Sautrnailia, which is a holiday party, and the Junior Classical League, which is a state convention of Latin students. Spanish club traveled to Spain, a two and a half week trip which included a visit to Madrid and San Fermin, where the running of the bulls takes place. Members also celebrated St. Valentine ' s Day and had an ice skating party. Several exchange students were hosted at BRHS this past year. Students came from such far away places as Europe, the Middle East, and South Ameri- ca. Exchange students were Luisa Colindres, Honduras; Mi- guel CIrbelz Spain; Isabelle Jaffres, France; Sagi Shifer, Is- rael, Els Vangoidsenhoven, Belgium; and Mick Van Loon, Belgium. BR students sported just about anything and were not afraid to show it. Styles ranged from neighborhood thrift shops to the more ex- pensive fashion shops. During the summer of 1987, Jams, brilliantly col- ored, oversized shorts, be- came a very popular item. Along with Jams came chucks (a.k.a. Converse high-tops.) Chucks came in every color from red to blue, and from purple to green. A BR teacher was occasionally seen wearing a pair of her own yellow chucks. And leather jackets were seen everywhere. Anything from the sporty bomber jack- et to the black punker jack- et, leather was a way for BR students to stay warm and very stylish. Almost every style was rep- resented at BR in 87-88. From the conservative preppy, to the infamous punk, and even to the new version of the hip- pie, tie-died and all, fashion was an art. Ste- phen Talley, our newest addition, joined the Broad Ripple administration as new vice-principal replacing Jackie Green- wood; Greenwood became IPS ' first female high school principal and is only the sec- ond female public school principal in the county. Casper, Computer Attendance Scheduling Program, returned once again to haunt unsuspecting cutters. Transportation to and from the high school by the river also changed. Instead of Metro providing buses, Ripplites rode yel- low buses to school. According to Rachel Walsh, junior, the yellow buses are quite an improvement over the chaos found on her bus last year. Parking was at a premi- um for students as the new parking lot was for teachers only. On rainy days teachers sometimes felt they should row in. The seniors, rebelling against lack of parking the first day of school parked their cars in a circle on the practice football field, not unlike a wagon train. Construction workers provided Broad Ripple with a new roof and became a familiar sight outside some classroom windows. But no matter how much Broad Ripple changes it will always be the same old BR in our hearts. Kate Bed well Workmen became a familiar sight over the past year while giving Broad Ripple a face lift. At the end of four years of hard work students receive a diploma, ac- knowledging their accomplish- ments; for some it goes even further. In the Spring of 1988 a new honors diploma will be award- ed. Some seniors currently ' have all the requirements to  graduate with this diploma. To earn the diploma a stu- dent must receive a C or better in all classes. The highest level Biology students listen intently to the teacher, with the exception of those trying to catch some ZZZZZ ' s. course must be taken, such as a G class, unless it will not fit a student ' s schedule. Credit requirements are high- er for the honors diploma. They include eight credits of both En- glish and math, six each of so- cial studies, science and one foreign language, four in fine art, health and physical educa- tion and seven to nine of electives. The students ' learning is expanded through hands on training, field trips, guest speakers, and volunteer work in the community. As quoted by Mortimer Adler, chairman of the board and editor of Encyclopedia Britannica, schooling must be general, liberal, and humantistic; not specialized, vocational and techni- cal. 54 Humanities Performing Arts he Center for Performing Arts (CPA) provides an opportunity for students to study and develop artis- tic talents and to learn theory and history in their art. Dance, music, telecommunications, theatre, and visual arts are the instructed areas offered. Emphasis is placed on self-discipline, self-motivation, and artis- tic integrity. Locally, at BRHS, renova- tion of the school was finally started. Asbestos was re- moved, workmen completed the reconstruction of the roof in late fall, and teachers were given a brand-new lighted parking lot. As for students, the search for parking spaces along side streets continued. Ground was also broken for the construction of the new BR gymnasium. Included in the gymnasium will be a tree- lined lobby, weight training room, and dressing rooms. Further out into the world of success and snafus, celeb- rities and politicians alike filled the year with news of their accomplishments and failures. Scandals arose in both the political and religious scenes. For the PTL, the television ministry, it was the uncover- ing of Jim Bakkers ' affair with Jessica Hahn, the vixen mod- el. Gary Hart ' s side order of Rice, as in Donna, changed the scope of the Democratic Presidential nominees. It was also a year of har- monic convergence, as the nine planets of the solar sys- tem aligned themselves for the first time in 23,412 years. Thousands joined hands and hummed to celebrate the spectacular event. The Constitution of the United States turned 200 years old in 1987 as Pope John Paul II toured major cit- ies of America. Crashes of all sorts were also prevalent in 1987. The Ramada Inn at the Indianapo- lis International Airport suf- fered considerable damage af- ter a fighter plane struck the building. The stock market also crashed October 19 as the Dow Jones plummeted 508 points. Reagan and Gorbachev met to discuss the possibilities of arms reduction, while Ameri- ca grew to- admire the educat- ed and well-rounded Raisa. Entertaiment-wise, 1987 in- troduced a number of talented artists and movie-makers. Ripple Sluggers Can ' t Hit Home For Ripple sluggers, 1987 was not the best of times. All three teams suffered poor scores and inexperienced players. The softball team finished with a 2 and 17 season last spring. Youth and inexperience were stated by several players as the reason for the unsuccessful season. Wendy Greenburg, junior, said We had a lot of fun, and hope to have a more experi- enced team next year. While the other lady sluggers were not as enthusiastic, Judy Cassel. senior, gave this opti- mistic viewpoint, saying We had a very good season last year and we hope to better our record in 1988. She went on to say. Virtually the entire team will return and with their expe- rience and drive, plus good coaching, we will be very competitive. The varsity baseball team suffered as well. After complet- ing a 6-18 season, Coach Tom Riensche blamed inexperience for the teams losses. However, Riensche, also op- timistic, said Next year ' s team will return some good players, so the Rockets look foward to an improved season. Manager Charles Yates, sophomore, pointed out several improvements made last sea- son. We had a lot of trouble getting off the ground, he said, But with the placement of Charlie Schlegal, senior, as a pitcher, our offense improved. Yates also said that batting improved with the season Thanks to such motivated players like Jimmy Dawson and Davy O ' Guin, both seniors. The junior varsity Baseball team was perhaps the most successful as well as positive when discussing last season. Danny Moore, sophomore, said By the end of the year we were one of the better JV squads. He also said Pierre Couvil- lion was an excellent batter and shortstop and helped improve the team greatly. Craig Blanchet, sophomore, stated that Zach Buhner, soph- omore, who was cited by sever- al players as being an excellent catcher, made the team good contenders. Student manager Ryan Smith, sophomore, said We had a very talented team last season, probably the best group of freshmen to come through Broad Ripple in a long time. ' J M Smith also noted that the team came close to winning season, and that if many of these players move up to varsi- ty this year it could mean a sucessful season for the varsity as well. The team placed 2nd and 5th at Chatard and Washington Relays. They also advanced individually in sec- tional and regional competitions. Our team was young and I think they worked a lot harder than statistics show, said Bry- an Madden. Madden won the shot put in the regionals and became the runner-up discus thrower in state. Bobby Raby tied the BR high jump record in sectional play. I think that since well have more experi- ence and run indoors will help next year, ' ' said Clifton Lyles, sophomore. The girls ' track tream contin- ued to shine from both individ- ual standouts and overall team efforts. Rhonda Hawkins and Moni- ca Jones were both honored as outstanding senior girl athletes from the Marion County area. Ruth Ann Candler, sophomore, became the first BR girl region- al winner ever with a blue rib- bon finish with the second fast- est time in the state finals. The girls scored more points the regionals this year than any other BR girls ' track team. They placed impressive stand- ings in Pike and Chatard Re- lays, ending the season 5-5. Coach Brandstetter won the Coaches ' Award of Excellence. The boys ' cross country team proved experience over size was the key to success dur- ing the ' 87 season. The small seven member team left sever- al big impressions on the courses. Exceptional performances by Oleric Montgomery, senior, and Doug Harvey, sophomore, led to a 6th place city finish. The team finished 8th in the Tech Invitational. David Brooks, sophomore, anchored the team, finishing first in five meets. Brooks also finished 3rd at the Washington Invitational and 5th in the City. Faculty Staff 95 The Class Of 1988 Education makes people easy to lead, but difficult to drive; easy to govern, but impossi- ble to enslave. Henry Peter Brougham The Present State of the Law Seniors made the grade and changed the ways of Broad Rip- ple High School in 1988. College-bound students made the mad rush to turn in applications by the December deadline. Many issues were discussed by seniors, such as tardiness and cutting. Students wanted an open campus during lunch periods for honor roll students; this was not to be. The most controversial topic of the senior class was the pos- sibility of girls graduating in or- ange robes. Tradition had the girls in white robes, boys in black. After a school-wide peti- tion, and much deliberation, the Senior Cabinet held a senior vote on the robes. Tradition reigned and the girls graduated in white. Seniors followed trends throughout the year. Rap mu- sic, Eddie Murphy, stonewashed and tie-died clothes, Converse tennis shoes, the Beatles, peace, and individ- ualism all stood tall as symbols of the changing times. Seniors participated in, and won awards for, outside school contests (such as in writing, speech, and art), building a pos- itive image for the black and orange. To lighten the tension, stu- dents used creative excuses to dodge assignments. Deron Overpeck boldy told teachers, the assignment was stupid. I accidentally flushed it down the toilet! stated Julie Brooks of her incomplete pa- per. Taking the athletic approach to homework was Andy Swal- lender, who said I was playing ping-pong for all hours of the night. One student recalled his ex- cuse, I had to go to Japan to rescue my brother. Spirits soared in 1988 as Ka- ren Applegate said, I was meditating, when asked for work. Many students used the old standard excuse for lost or in- complete papers. These includ- ed leaving it at home and the dog at it. The most creative excuse was from Heather O ' Sullivan: I just met this new person, right? Well, over the weekend I was at his house working on homework, when all of the sud- den, the security police knocked on the door. He was deported back to Finland and he had my homework. Chaoch Seidensticker stated Deep in thought were William Pate. Leonard Lee, Stephanie Flynn and An- thony Spells. another humorous experience: During the Madrigal Dinner, Andy Swallender yelled out a song — The Twelve Days of Christmas — when everyone else was quiet! Opposite day, when boys dressed like girls, was a funny memory for Lori Mackey. More sobering occasions were those concerning pressing issues such as teenage preg- nancy and teen suicide. No matter how innocent the person, one little lie always lurked. It might ' ve been to a parent; it always brought pride to the heart. The top of all lies in the sen- ior class was: but, I ' m nor ly- ing, closely followed by the old standby: I ' m going to a friend ' s house. After staying out till 5:00 a.m., Sharon Spells avoided troubled this way: 1 told my mother the car stopped and I got a flat tire. What stories could Charlie Schlegal, Jennifer Shea, Heather Lankford, and Susan Moffat, seniors, tell about this scene? When asked her best lie, Rhonda Moran answered, From which week? Honestly, I only had one beer, was the best lie Joe Thomas ever told his parents. The more innovative the lie, the better. Laurie Cox showed her creativity in her lie. I was forced in a car at gunpoint, but escaped ' (1 was three hours late getting home)! Lies are easy and maybe even sometimes fun to tell; when lies aren ' t harmful, they can be exciting; besides, who could a little white lie hurt? With this came an interesting question: what are our dreams, goals and future plans? Everything from law enforce- ment officers to psychologists, and from fashion designers to pediatricians were answers to the question. Throughout the decision- making process, one idea per- vaded: to be rich or marry rich. This was closely followed by getting married and having children. Having discovered their tal- ents in high school, BR seniors moved on, planning to take the career world by storm. Marianne La ugh tin Donnell Thurmon Football 1; wrestling 1.
