As in every elecrion, rhe media rried ro predicr rhe resulrs of rhe elecrion or various rimes before vores were rallied This year, rhe unanimous consensus rhar rhe presidenrial race was roo close ro call couldn ' r have been more wrong. The race ro become Presidenr began in lore 1979, when rhe candidares began rheir primary campaigns. Through rhe early primaries, Republicans Ronald Reagan and George Dush ran neck-and- neck, and rhe Democroric race berween Jimmy Carrer and Edward Kennedy seemed even closer. In rhe end, Reagan decidedly ourran Dush, and Carrer bear Kennedy in a race rhar looked uncerroin unril rhe polling of rhe delegares ar rhe Democraric Narional Convenrion. Independenr candidare John Anderson ' s name became placed on rhe bailor by peririon in all 50 srares. Experrs predicred rhar rhe Republican Narional Convenrion in Derroir would be dull, as Mr. Reagan had a clench on rhe nominarion. In facr, rhe convenrion blazed wirh rumors and specularion abour who Mr. Reagan would choose as his vice presidenrial running mare. Many of Mr. Reagan ' s aides and mosr of rhe delegares wanred ro see a Ronald Reagan-Gerald Ford ricker, bur Reagan and Ford could nor agree on key issues, so Reagan chose George Dush as his running mare. Afrer some UNDECIDED, YOU SAY? . . . Undecided voters, like ir or nor, hove always been barraged wirh lirerarure ar rhe polls. This year was no excepnon, os represenrarives from four parries campaigned ar Ripple. very rough primaries, ' Jimmy Carrer evenrually won rhe democroric nominarion over Edward Kennedy on rhe firsr bailor ar rhe Democraric Narional Convenrion, wirh Vice Presidenr Walrer Mondale as his running mare. John Anderson chose Parrick Lucey, former governor of Wisconsin, as his vice presidenrial candidare. The fall campaign proved exhausring for all rhree major candidares. Personal arrack afrer personal arrack was launched by Carrer and Reagan. Special inreresr groups such as rhe Narional Conservarive Polirical Acrion Coalirion (NCPAC) conducred campaigns agoinsr many liberal senarors and represenrarives, as well as Presidenr Carrer. In Indiana, NCPAC was an insrrumenral elemenr in rhe defears of Senaror Dirch Dayh by Dan Quayle and Represenrarive John Drademas by John Hilliard. In polls released November 0, all rhree major Television nerworks and rhe counrry ' s rwo mosr respecred pollsrers, George Gallup and Louis Harris, released polls showing rhe presidenrial race roo close ro call. On November 4, rhe counrry ' s vorers gave Ronald Reagan and George Dush a landslide vicrory. The elecrronic media did nor predicr a winner. The American people showed rhar rhey have opinions of rheir own and did nor seem ro rake rhe pollsrers ' words as gospel. The increasing feeling rhar rhe media had roo much influence in rhe elecrion appeared ro be disproved. DECISIONS, DECISIONS . . . Endless pracrices, numerous games and hoarse fans finally paid off when rhe Rockers carried away rhe srare rirle, 73-66. NO, IT ' S MINE . . . Crashing rhe boards simulraneously, Jeff Adkisson and Jerry Snyder leap rogerher for a rebound while Jeff Robinson and Kevin Tracey warch. BENCH BREAK . . . Taking a brearher from rhe grueling acrion of rhe game, Kevin Tracey and King Duke ger some badly needed resr. Ripplires carried around a sense of pride: signs in The Village srore windows and abour rhe school remained up ro serve as a reminder of rhe vicrory. Alrhough rhe 1979-80 yearbook had already hir rhe presses and couldn ' r include rhe Srare Championship, a special newspaper was published by rhe journalism srudenrs. Wirh weekends free for orher acriviries and baskerball paraphenalia packed away unril nexr year, srudenrs rurned rheir arrenrion ro Spring Break. The cheer All The Way To M.S.A.! grew quier and was replaced by We ' re Number One! . TEAM SPIRIT . . .
