Hard luck hounds Rockets . . . Ripple's 1953 gridmen opened their tough schedule at Kokomo. After an even first quarter the Rockets broke into the scoring column. A pass from Dick Hodges to Paul Jenkins tallied for Ripple, and a touchdown gallop by Frank Parker made the halftime count 12-0 in favor of Broad Ripple. In the third quarter halfback Kenny Long moved 67 yards to put the Black and Orange out in front, 19-0. Kokomo came back in the fourth quarter with two touch- downs, but Ripple won, 19-14. The next week Ripple faced a powerful Tech team on the latter's field. After a rocky 27-0 first half the Ripplites couldn't recover, and in spite of their two second- half touchdowns the gridders lost 27-14. 28 All-state Richmond halfback Tommy Fletcher eludes Ripple tackler Merrill Gilpin.

After dropping the Homecoming game to mighty Richmond, 48-6, Broad Ripple faced Howe in its second city tilt of the year. Unable to get any breaks, Ripple lost, 7-6. After falling before a fine Washington eleven the Rockets were downed by Manual. Cathedral beat Broad Ripple, 20-0, scor- ing all of its points in the first half. Ripple lost to Shortridge, 25-6, to finish the season with a 1-7 record. Mark Jones skirts left end against Richmond. Sophomore halfback Kenny Long picks up blocker Dick Hodges on an end run.
