Crowded conditions brought about by the rapid growth of Indianapolis' far north section made this addition neces- sary. Total cost of this new east wing was S757,000 plus approximately 560,000 in equipment. Broad Ripple's addition had to share the spotlight, for along with it came a new prin- cipal, Mr. J. Fred Murphy. He is shown at left with Mr. K. V. Ammerman, retired principal. Mr. Murphy has been in the educational field since 1929, and has been on the staFf of the city schools for 14 years. Before becom- ing head man here, Mr. Murphy served as assistant superintendent of Indianapolis pub- lic schools and head of the department of counseling. Mr. Ammerman, who made Ripple the institution it is today, preceded Mr. Murphy as principal. In 1923 Mr. Ammerman came to this school from Emmerich Manual Training High School. He retired in September, 1949, after 26 years of service. Dedication exercises for the new unit were held on October 5, 1949, with Principal Mur- phy formally accepting the building from Mr. Ammerman. Talks were given by representa- tives of the Board of School Commissioners and by Mr. Virgil Stinebaugh, superintendent of Indianapolis public schools. In the picture below, Mr. Murphy is shown conferring with some of his assistants. Left to right are Mr. Hubert L. Wann, dean of boys, Mr. C. Edgar Stahl, vice-principal, Prin- cipal Murphy, Mr. Harold K. Harding, vice- principal, and Miss Ruth B. Carter, dean of girls. w w . i n 4 191114 ,1f'fili1iu4f1f'fen1ffo.ae7a!Vew70in9 This year the Girls' Physical Education Department was moved to a modern gymna- sium in the new wing. Wall sections of glass brick and built-in ceiling lights illuminate the room. Butterfly basketball backboards of the latest style are suspended from the ceiling. Adiacent to the gym is the dressing room, complete with 18 showers. A 30 toot dressing table and mirror is set against one wall of this room, leaving the remaining space for lockers. Also in this wing are the new ROTC quar- ters, which include a 50 foot rifle range in the basement below. This range, which is con- sidered the best in the state, has a wall of steel boiler plate set at an angle behind the targets so that the bullets will be deflected into a pit below. The range is so treated acoustically that a rifle shot makes little more noise than the dropping of an eraser in an ordinary classroom. Sixteen pieces of equipment were added in the metal shop-a shaper, a surface grinder, a tool- cutting grinder, a milling machine, lathes, and drill presses. Wood benches, wood lathes, and a circu- lar saw comprise the wood shop's new equip- ment. There are special rooms for gluing and finishing, a lumber room, a storage room, and an office. Fluorescent lighting illuminates the new, larger mechanical drawing room. The industrial arts program has been ex- panded so that it is now possible for a student to take two years of shop. New lffudfic aacifified- ,Che Bed fn Maclweuf The new instrumental music hall lupper leftj, which is considered the best in the mid- dle west, is the result of 20 years of planning by Mr. Owen Beckley, director of the Broad Ripple band and orchestra since l937. Mr. Beckley incorporated his ideas for improved music facilities at Ripple in blueprints, which he redesigned each time a rumor was started that the building was to be expanded. A dream come true is the large rehearsal hall, 60 feet long and 40 feet wide. It was designed by acoustical experts so that music always sounds its best. There are four floor levels which make it possible for each student to see the director clearly. Three souncl- treated practice rooms with double glass and double paneled doors also are included in the new quarters. In addition, there is a music library where the music for the band and orchestra is filed and the instruments are kept. Another added convenience is the faculty office, which features three large win- dows through which the entire instrumental music department can be observed. Other new features at Broad Ripple this year are the health clinic, housed in five newly furnished and well-equipped rooms, and the teachers' dining room at the west end of the cafeteria. Also completed this year was the installation of a new 510,000 public address system. New speakers were installed throughout the entire building, with the new unit, cottage, boiler room, gymna- sium, and dressing rooms receiving speakers for the first time. A new course, Drivers' Education, was added this year. This course includes actual experience in driving a dual control car as well as classroom instruction with movies on accident prevention. 53,5 Spaciauft fidmalf Remodeled gaifcfinq Completely modern in every respect is Broad Ripple's new library, located in the large room which was tirst the school audi- torium and later the girls' gymnasium. Attrac- tive furniture and pale green walls make studying a real pleasure. A large panel on the rear wall of the room provides space for art displays. Also included in the new library are a glass enclosed work room for the libra- rians, a large and modern checking desk, magazine racks, and filing cabinets. A former classroom has been converted into an enlarged bookstore. Quicker service and adequate storage space are made pos- sible by a long counter and large shelves. Another classroom has been partitioned into offices for Vice-Principal Harold K. Harding and Miss Gertrude Daniel, school book- keeper. Teachers' mail boxes are also located in this room. ' ' e-4faw1ecf.7nllfew0Micw1 The oldest section of the building, built in 1913, has been remodeled and repainted. Crowded conditions have been alleviated by converting two classrooms, the old book- store, and the former teachers' room into offices. One of these classrooms, Room 216, has been partitioned into four new offices. Miss Elizabeth Roberts, whose office is in this room, was made head of the Language De- partment this year. Occupying another office in this room is Miss Miriam King, director of counseling, who assists students with voca- tions and college entrance. Mr. Albert Mahin, co-ordinator, who helps students find employ- ment, has another of these offices. The fourth office is occupied by Miss Rhea Bauer, home visitor. The former teachers' room is the new office of Mr. Hubert L. Wann, dean of boys, and Mrs. Charity Ratcliff, attendance clerk. The room which was formerly the bookstore is now the office of Miss Mary Connor, director of productions. The console for the public address system is situated in this room. Mr. Clovys L. Harvey, who acts as business mana- ger, has been given a room in the main office. A large basement room, formerly used as the girls' locker room, has been converted into a proiection room where films pertaining to class work are shown regularly. The former first aid room and an adia- cent classroom have been transformed into the new publications offices. The headquar- ters of the Riparian Yearbook, the Riparian Weekly, and School News Bureau are located in these rooms. Above left: Betty Sue Ross helps Miss King find a college catalog in her files. More night dances were held this year than ever before. The Riparian's Birthday Ball on October 8, where Doris Graham and Dick Campbell were crowned Miss and Mr. Riparian, was followed on December 3 by the Varsity Drag, sponsored by the Letter- men's Club. Dances after bas- ketball games were introduced on February 10. At the Cupid Capers on February 17, Tom Barden and Sally Gordner were elected King and Queen of Hearts. A unique event of this school year was the surprise vacation Ripplites got from February 28 to March 7. This vacation caused by a' coal shortage, wasvonly the second shutdown in the 100 year excellent record of the Indianap- olis Public Schools. The annuoil operetta was given on October 17. Much tal- ent was displayed at the Ripples, the annual variety show, held on March 24 and 25. Spring brought a succession of big events. Mitzi Masters served as editor-in-chief for the first semester, and Dick Madden took over that post for the spring semester. The staff included Art Plumley, makeup editor, Mary Ellen Norris and Nancy Stassus, news editors, Barbara Baurley and Janet Lahr, edi- torial editors, Janet Baldwin, feature editor, Tom Graves, sports editor, Tom Johnson and Janet Bald- win, cartoonists, and Doris Parrotte, head copy editor. Early last spring plans for the Yearbook got under way with Doris Graham, Nan Hall, and Bill Frazer fpictured at leftl as associate editor, business manager, and editor-In-chief, respec- tively. More planning and revising were done at the Indiana University Journalism lnstitute last summer, and there the plan for the book took first place honors. During the year, many hours were spent after school by the staff members as they mounted pictures and wrote copy. The 1949 Riparian Yearbook received the rating of All-American from National Scholas- tic Press Association, and this year's staff is hoping to reach the same goal. This year for the first time individual pictures of every student appear in the book. These presented many new problems, but they were figured out by the underclass editors, Sue Van Sickle and Barbara Carson. Senior pictures were handled by Margaret Appel and her assistant, Ann Behrman, while Janet Sage began work on the faculty section. Respon- sible for the activities and club section was Janey Zaiser, assisted by Tomeen Garrett. The sports sec- tion had as editors Jim Alltop and George Seiden- sticker. The cartooning throughout the book was done by Janet Baldwin, who along with Mary Mill- holland made up the art staff. Photography, other than that done by a professional photographer, was handled by Ed Elrod, assisted by Bill Cale and Don Schafer. Carolyn Dessauer served as advertising manager, assisted by Carol Capel. Above: Yearbook staff members confer about pictures. V 5 1 X ff in-I' New Alecacl eaa-cfs fufzkie ' Budde '7ecam Coach Walt Jurkiewicz, new head football coach, was forced to build a football team around iust five returning lettermen. The inexperienced squad started with a win and then hit a losing streak. However, the gridders regained their winning stride near mid-season and won three of the last four starts. The varsity eleven got off to a roaring start by bumping a rangy Howe team, 31 to 0. Outcharged on the ground, the Rockets took to the air, completing 7 of 12 attempted passes. The following Friday the Rockets traveled to Bra- zil only to go down to defeat, 26 to 0. Continuing their traveling habits, the Ripple squad iourneyed to Evansville on September 16, to suFfer their second straight defeat, 26 to 0, at the hands of Central's Golden Bears. Returning to their home gridiron the following Fri- day, the victory-hungry Rockets battled the Richmond Red Devils before an Alumni Homecoming crowd, but came out on the short end of the score, 12-7. A 35 yard aerial from Jim Alltop to Jack Phillips resulted in the Rockets' only tally of the game, with Dick Campbell booting the extra point. On October 14 the Rockets lined up against the Washington Continentals on the local field. Ripple drew first blood as Alltop, Rocket quarterback, lofted an aerial to John Plum, who raced over for six points, however, the Rockets dropped the game, 7 to 6. Operating from a smooth working offensive, Rip- ple rolled over a persistent Manual eleven, 21 to 12, for their second victory of the season. The Rockets evened up their won-lost record on November 4 by dumping the Fightin' Irish of Cathe- dral, 14 to 0. With John Campbell, the only returning letterman, Coach Frank Baird built his 1949-50 varsity squad around a reserve team which last year had lost only one game. The Rockets dropped the season opener to Law- rence Central, 32 to 30, in an overtime. They evened the count the following week with victories over Cathedral and Sacred Heart. Tech put a stop to these winning ways with a 46 to 41 triumph, and Crispus Attucks dropped the Rockets, 38 to 31. The Orange and Black returned to the hardwood after Christmas vacation to drub Manual, 41 to 31, but lost an overtime affair the following night at Ben Davis, 35 to 34. Shortridge was the next victim, 40 to 34. Greenfield dropped the Orange and Black below the .500 mark by a 58 to 46 margin, but the Rockets retaliated the following week with decisive wins over Washington and Noblesville. A well regarded Southport squad slipped by Broad Ripple, 48 to 47, after which the Rockets put together a four game winning streak to end the season. Pike Township and Warren Central fell by 53 to 30 and 69 to 28 scores, respectively. Adams of South Bend was trampled, 60 to 43, and the Rockets scored four points in the last seven seconds to beat Greencastle, 44 to 43. In the Sectional the uncanny shooting of Bob Hanna and Warren Sparks led the Orange and Black past Decatur Central, 59 to 47, and Ben Davis, 55 to 43. Cathedral fell before the Broad Ripple onslaught, 48 to 41, before Tech turned the trick in a heart-breaking final game. Dave Jessee led the season's scoring with 220 points in 22 games. He was followed closely by Hanna, John Campbell, and Dick Campbell. Hanna was high scorer in the sectionals with 49 points, and Jessee, Sparks, Dick Campbell, and Hanna were named on all-sectional teams. The first of the strictly- senior activities was color day, observed on March 30. With pint-sized high hats of dark and powder blue, and ribbons and clothing of the same colors, the seniors were distinc- tive. The class gift, a trophy case to be placed in the hall north of the gymnasium, was soon announced. This gift was financed mainly by proceeds from the Senior play, Ever Since Eve. After a week of try-outs, cast members were chosen for the play, and it was announced that Donald Shaw, Dorothy Walker, Dick Warne, and Nancy Ahrbecker would play the leads. This year for the first time the senior boys as well as the senior girls invited their mothers to the Senior Mothers' Tea. Friday night, May 26, the seniors attended the annual reception which the iuniors had spent hours planning. School was nearing a close, and the last, and per- haps the best, of the senior activities remained -Class day, Baccalaureate, Commencement, and the Grad Dance. Senior days are won- derful days. Years in which students participated in activities are indicated as follows: 1, freshman, 2, sophomore, 3, iunior, 4, senior.
