7 (fceett z uC ’Wkcte BRISTOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Bristol, Rhode Island Through our high school years We have had time — Time for God Time for Our Country Time for Ourselves Time to take part in Organizations, Sports, and Activities. The staff of 1959 dedicates this issue of the Green and White to MRS. M. THERESA DONOVAN A FRIEND who always has a winning smile for the students of Bristol Senior High A WONDERFUL TEACHER whose knowledge and love of music has spread through and has enriched the lives of her many students A WILLING PERSON who gives so much of herself to each senior class and who has made the Class of 1959’s play and operetta successful. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1959 As we come to the end of another year and I realize that each year an increasing number of you are the sons and daughters of my former pupils, I cannot help but recall the following stanza from a poem in the ’57 Green and White, “These days so quickly come and then they go With laughter, sorrows, happiness and friends. They pass sometimes forgotten, but I know Their memories will ne’er in my true heart end.” M. H. ’57 This expresses my sentiments for your class. I appreciate your co-operation in the activities of our school, where often you have made a difficult task a pleasant one and I sincerely wish that you will be happy and successful in your chosen work. Above all I would exhort you to try to possess at all times a true sense of gratitude to all those contributing to your individual welfare. MICHAEL SECURO Vice Principal of Bristol Senior High School The staff of 1959 wishes to thank these outgoing members of the School Committee for all they have done for the youth of Bristol. 5 MR. We were happy in this new atmosphere until a dark cloud passed over the heads of frightened sophomores — mid-year-examination cloud. After exams our first elections were held. Those elected were: President, Jerome M. Squatrito; Vice-President, Paul Bruno; Secretary, Eileen Borges; and Treasurer, Jo-Ann DuPont. The Executive Committee consisted of: Stanley Achilli, Frank Caizzi, Robert Ciociola and Ann Parisi. Our first big dance, the Sophomore Hop, was held on May 24. Then it was back to work. Final exams marked the end of our first year and we looked forward to a two-month rest. Time was short and I soon realized that we were juniors, back for another year of education and activity. We studied hard and from time to time we cheered all the teams of Bristol High with great enthusiasm. Time for mid-years again and one heard the usual moans and groans echoing through the corridors. The class officers in our junior year were: President, Stanley Achilli; Vice-President, Samuel Pas-qua; Secretary, Elizabeth Marshall; and Treasurer, Janice DaPonte. The Executive Committee consisted of: Sarah DeCrescenzo, Marjorie Farrell, Kathleen Formisano, Carmine Puniello, and Alberta Remieres. The prom was held on April 18. The committee’s hard work was rewarded by the happiness of all who attended the dance in the beautifully decorated gym. The soft music of the orchestra faded away as we settled down to study for final exams. The coming summer vacation was appreciated by all. September 1958, we, as glorious seniors, re- turned to Bristol Senior High for the last time. This year our lives and times were filled with hopes and great expectations. Class elections were held on October 9. The officers elected to lead our class were: Stanley Achilli, President; Jerome M. Squatrito, Vice-President; Janice DaPonte, Treasurer; and I, Norene Ayres, Secretary. Thise elected to the Executive Committee were: Kathleen Formisano, Richard Almida, Marjorie Farrell, William Fasano, Alberta Remieres, and Douglas Smith. On October 16 we received our class rings and everyone had a glimpse of the gold shining on the hand of every senior. “Do I look all right? Is my hair in place? Is my tie straight?” Those were the questions that we asked on December 1, when the photographer came to take our pictures for the yearbook. Along with home work and other school activities the next few months were spent rehearsing for the senior play and operetta under the direction of Mrs. M. Theresa Donovan. The title of the play which was presented in the winter was “The Little Dog Laughed” and that of the operetta in the spring was The Belle of Bagdad. Our goal was to win the approval of the audience and this was accomplished with great success. Before we knew it Graduation Week had arrived. Monday, June 1, at the class banquet we received our yearbooks. On Wednesday, June 3, Class Day Exercises were held. On this day the secret ambitions of the seniors were revealed by the reading of the wills and class history. At last! June 4 — Graduation. As we walked slowly and cautiously into the auditorium our minds were filled with visions of the happy events which we had experienced. But in our hearts, we felt the sadness and joy of this long awaited day. The last dance, the Senior Reception, was held on Friday night of Graduation Week. This was the last time we saw each other as classmates. Now, as I gaze at the beautiful marble building and the quaint colonial structure, I know that I cannot turn back the clock for the Class of ’59, for we have graduated and have only the memory of the most wonderful years of our lives. 13 FIRST ROW —- Left to Right: A. We, Ann Marie, Anthony, Jerome and I, Dolores, Dialed our classmates on our phonovision and saw on the screen before us Uncle Sam made Joanne Andrade a star. News of her income tax evasion has traveled far. To be Secretary of the Treasury was Norene Ayres’ plan. For her economy was easy when married to a Scottsman. To be an actress was Barbara Barbosa’s goal in life. But there is plenty of drama being a lawyer’s wife. Her beauty brought her many lovers, Pat Biancuzzo’s picture appears on all “Esquire” covers. To be a dancing instructor was Sandra Biancuzzo’s ambition. Married Arthur Murray, III, to keep the tradition. A born genius Kathleen Bisbano was meant to be. Works in a cannery arranging noodle soup alphabetically. While traveling through Hollywood Dot Brum struck gold. It happened to be Jack Benny’s billfold. Acting seemed to be Merry Ann Cadile’s destiny. She recites poetry when T. V. stations have network difficulty. Judy Carvalho searched in vain for her castle in Spain, The mortgage was so high it drove her insane. A brush and a beret were Janice DaPonte’s tools for fame. Greater glory she found since she changed her name. Slave to the masculine gender was she, Sarah DeCrescenzo now operates a fraternity. Beverly DiPalma’s fate was to explore. She didn’t have a hunting license so spent her life in the arms of the law. Jo-Ann DuPont, a girl with grace and charm. Essential attributes when she settled on a farm. A head for figures made Manuel Lima much in demand. Now as lifeguard at the beach he sketches them in the sand. “To be or not to be?”, read the sign. Being an obstetrician was Ann Machado’s line. Married to a famous singer Betty Marshall hoped to be. Singing a duet they lived happily. Joan Maturi, a girl who played sports actively. Now an Olympic Champion who brought her country victory. Maria Oliveira is looking at the world through rose-colored glasses. She goes around the world on Tony’s passes. Her knowledge brought her fame and glory. Wrote a condensed book — “The Anne Parisi Story.” Diane Pelland’s troubles have always been little ones. She keeps them locked up in the nursery she runs. Rubicrosa’s secretary was Pat Pclland’s choice, For each dictation she receives a Rolls-Royce. Off with the dust, auto racing was in her veins, Speed, it seems was Phyllis Principe's greatest gains. 90 As a fashion designer, Mary Ann Rebello won high acclaim. She made the dress according to women's frame. Love for adventure Ruth Salcone had. Weekends for her in Mau Mau Land were just a fad. Suzanne Salcone married a six-foot spouse, A necessity it was to build a split-level house. Bringing laughter to all was Linda Staton’s dream. She and a barrel of monkeys make quite a team. Anthony Velleca, a friend he will always be. Now a lawyer, talks over your troubles for a fee. I called our president. Stanley Archilli, He is now a successful, professional hillbilly. Florine Almeida, who was always so silly. Is the chief taster in a factory that produces piccalilli. Gloria Botelho, who liked to have fun. Is now starring in the picture, “The Wild One.” Gloria Brown is still giving orders it seems. She is now a captain in the United States Marines. Poor Donald Campbell, the class clown. His jokes are still looked upon with a frown. So nice and helpful was Ferdinand Cirillo, He now designs women’s hats made of Brillo. Peter Coleman, so conceited and shy. Is, at last, the manufacturer of women’s hair dye. Carol Collins shows her courage each night. She is the supreme Matador in any bull fight. Charles Collins rests to his enjoyment. And receives a weekly check for unemployment. Joyce DeFusco’s profession is carrying a sign which reads: “Try Aunt Mabel’s Super Snuff, One Squeeze Puts Your Mind at Ease!” Elaine DeLuca, who always enjoyed a good talk. Still has the mad obsession for stealing chalk. Francis Duarte, gifted with muscles and height. Is the winner of the World’s Heavy-Weight Champion Fight. Kathleen Formisano, a judge, has finally caught her man. She now presides over the Moran clan. Cecilia Francis’ gift of gab was never under rated. She is now the President of Gabbing Incorporated. Peter Goglia, in school, was such a cad. His profession is now modeling Dr. Shuler’s Foot Pads. Joan Lawrence, always a dreamer, Now holds the position of a professional street cleaner. Plump Mary Ann Lopes stood before me, her hair in curlers, She had let herself go, was no more a good twirler. A successful actor is Joseph Martino, Known to Hollywood as another Rudolph Valentino. Lewis Mello, the hairdresser, now called monsieur. Has made his first million designing milady’s coiffure. Wesley Miller, who didn’t go on dates. Is happily married and the father of eight. Alexander Paiva, a ballet teacher, says his slogan is: “If you want to learn to dance, come to me and take a chance.” 91 Dwight Smith, in high school, was not the man, but the mouse. Now. an exterminator, his motto is: “Kill the pest in your house! Because of his muscles Jerome M. Squatrito was called “Bully”, As a youngster he ate his spinach quite fully. So serious and shy was Michael Velleca, He is now a successful and rich undertaker. Kit Almeida, one all the girls tried to please, Is now a teacher of Portuguese. A dental technician Jeanne Babbitt wanted to be, Now pulling teeth is her specialty. A boy who was idolized was John Borges, Now as a movie star he is known as Jake Gorgeous. Paul Bruno with his wonderful voice and charm. Now serenades female hogs on his own farm. Dennis Cabral, who played the tuba. Now is a great leader fighting in Cuba. A girls who always put on the freeze was Julie Calouro, She is now' the head of the weather bureau. Robert Ciciola, in school, was very dizzy. Now the father of ten, he is more than busy. Joe Cirillo, a boy who always liked fun. At present is America’s Public Enemy No. One. Leo Contente is in the service — the laundry service that is. And from what I hear he’s doing a whirling business. Theresa Cruz who always wanted to be a nurse, Makes her living driving a hearse. In high school, Sandra Fields was a drum majorette.
