I i USS BRISTOL COUNTY (LST 1198) USS BRISTOL COUNTY (LST 1198) is the seventeenth and final ship of the NEWPORT Class Tank Landing Ships to be delivered to the Navy by National Steel and Shipbuilding Company. The NEWPORT Class LSTs are the largest and fastest LSTs ever built. The revolutionary design includes a clipper bow with its over-the-bow ramp, which is supported by the outstretched derrick arms, a helicopter flight deck and a stern gate. In addition, this class of ship if the first U.S. Navy combat class ship fitted with a bow thruster. The bow thruster consists of an electric motor driving a controllable pitch propeller six and one-half feet in diameter. This unit allows intricate side maneuvering of the ship, considerably increas- ing maneuverability in restricted water during mooring, beaching and causeway operations. The main propulsion plant consists of six diesel engines linked to twin controllable pitch propellers. The unit is regulated by a sophisticated governor system allowing the engines to operate efficiently at any given speed. The control levers are located not only in the engineer- ing spaces, but also in the pilot house to provide almost instantaneous response to engine orders. The over-the-bow ramp allows a more efficient hull design which makes speeds in excess of 20 knots possible. Vehicles and equipment may be off-loaded over the bow ramp directly to the beach or onto a pontoon causeway. Amphibious vehicles may also be launched in deep water through the stern gate while the ship is anchored or underway. The vehicle stowage well or tank deck, as it is commonly called, features two turn-tables to assist in vehicle positioning. The latest electronic and communications systems have been installed and armament is provided by two 3-inch 50-caliber rapid-fire twin mounts. USS BRISTOL COUNTY is a key player in the Pacific Fleet Amphibious Assault Force. The capability to carry a large complement of USMC personnel, vehicles and cargo; off-loading directly onto the beach is her forte.
