The B. C. 's flat bottom and snap roll , charactoristics not so fondly remembered by those of us with less than iron innards, enable her to perch safely at the waters edge. The flat bottom and strong tendency to right herself allow the B. C. to maintain her stability when greater amounts of her hull are unsupported. The unique over-the-bow ramp design requires skilled technicians for maintenance and operation. Expert navigation and ships handling place the vessel on the section of the beach desired by contour for the safest beaching. Precautions are taken by Engineering personnel to prevent the intake of sand and silt in engine cooling lines and to be prepared to deballast as needed to ease retraction. Once all the men and gear are ashore, off we go. Look's easy, doesn't it. - 0 is N

Y X LOU OPERATIONS One method of delivering our cargo of Marines and their equipment ashore is by an LST- LSU stern gate marriage . In theory a reliable simple operation it in fact calls for a high degree of skill by both the LCU operator and our own deck force. Once the stern gate is lowered and the stern gate cables are safely hooked out of the way, the LGU will make her approach. Safety lines not withstanding, bringing one rolling, pitching vessel into marriage with another necessitates an expert at the wheel. The LCU lines up and closes so as to engage the rhino horn to the stern gate when she lowers her ramp. Throughly tied off, and with her ramp impaled by the rhino horn both vessels may still work against each other. This movement calls for well trained drivers for the actual transfer. Once loaded the LCU lifts her ramp and departs . All personnel concerned breathe a sigh of relief and prepare for the next approach, while tons of equipment is moved swiftly to the Marines waiting on the beach. -RIP: A A M., -a -... -. .am ,. fn.. . 1 - NX' A-7 . ,, 'R 7kW-'ES'-77' Q.
