49' fi: HIHIVIUSA Liberty in Formosa was to be a first for nearly everyone aboard, and the crew looked forward to visiting the small Chinese city of Kaoshiung. We arrived in Kaoshiung intending to spend about a week in port, but the third morning after our arrival we were steaming out of the small harbor ahead of an approaching typhoon. After three days of typhoon evasion with the rest of the ships of our division, which took us down around the Philippines, we again entered Kaoshiung. Several. days were spent in training personnel of the Chinese Nav Y, and nearly every day the Captain and the Commodore were visited by high Military and civilian officials of the Chinese Nationalist govern- ment.
