Standing: Swift, Coapman, Field. Seated: Wells, Gates, Miles.
Serving as guardians of the student body, Brighton's Board of Education is directly responsible
for the welfare of the school as it carries into effect the wishes of the community. Besides making
the special decisions that account for the smooth running of the school, the Board is responsible for
the hiring of the teachers and the balancing of the budget.
Allen B. Gates, president since l936, presides over the monthly meetings and confers with Mr.
Donley on faculty appointments and school affairs. Vice-president Schuyler C. Wells, Jr., oversees
instruction, supplies, and insurance. Mrs. Edward B. Miles serves as secretary, while C. E. Coapman
acts as treasurer. ln charge of transportation is Arnold B. Swift, while L. Dudley Field, new member
of the board, supervises maintenance.

Mrs. Helen Yawman
With his ever-expanding, ever-
changing staff of teachers, high
school, grade school, office and
janitorial staff' about him, Super-
intendent of Brighton Schools,
Aubrey D. Donley, commandeers
from the head of the family table.
He is the good father. Mainte-
nance of both red schools, includ-
ing correspondence, expenditures,
supplies, and educational policies,
come under Mr. Donley's guiding
hand, and he wields his duties
with foresight and wisdom.
Mr. Donley has belonged to
Brighton since 1927, the year the
average departing senior took his
first step in the ultimate direc-
tion of the red-brick schoolhouse.
Through all the beginning days,
of the energetic, pioneer board
of the first wee, but spirited,
graduating class, of the gradual
developing of her strong founda-
tions, Mr. Donley, as principal,
chartered for his Brighton school
a course of enrichment and
As wild fields in the dewy com-
munity became transformed into
squares of neat green, as shiny
houses climbed up to comfort the
few former lonely buildings, as
more and more young eyes looked
from these houses, curious to
learn, Mr. Donley watched the
subsequent construction of sev-
eral additions to the Elmwood
Avenue School and finally the rise
of the new high school down the
road, when he was made super-
intendent of Brighton schools.
Today, with Miss Alice Foley and
Gordon Allen, principals of the
grade school and high school, he
oversees learning, character-
building, and an awakening of
fresh minds that promise truth
and progress and mean America.
Mrs. Helen Yawman, in the
right-hand serving place, guards
the smooth-functioning channel
through which pass all appoint-
ments, mail, and business for Mr.
