The Crucible aThe Gruciblev is set at the time of the Salem VVitch Trials and it reflects the irrational fears of the 195O?s when Senator McCarthy led a 'cWitch Huntv for spies and Reds that intimidated VVashington officialdom. In- vestigators, some of them self-appointed, made long lists of uSubversives,D and anyone Who questioned their ac- cusations, or their right to make them, was under sus- pician. Many people found themselves out of jobs be- cause there Was some unrevealed question about their i'Security.D Miller himself was under suspician at one time. In this mass hysteria that prevailed in the fifties, Miller recognized a parallel to the situation in Salem in 1692, when a community was driven by its fears and by the accusations of hysterical adolescent girls to the hanging of more than a score of citizens. Some few persons were actually trying to commune with Satan, and several young girls danced naked in the Woods, but most of the accused were guilty only of the great sin of disagreeing with their neighbors.
