. . . . A Midsummer Nights Dream 'SA Midsummer Nightis Dreamy is not to be taken seriously. There is no message, hidden symbol, or expanded metaphor-just two hours of delectable entertainment. In Shakespeareis time, Mid- summer Day was an animal holiday. In the morning the London trainbands marched out to Mile End for their one day of military training. They came back to enjoy a night of revelry and rowdi- ness. Morevcr, by tradition, on Midsummer Eve witches held high festival. The dreams of midsummer night were likely to be Wild. In such a spirit Shakespeare wrote this play of the courtly loves of Theseus and his followers, of the squabbles in F airyland, and of the ham-handed thcatricals of the Athenian XVorking Menis Amateur Dramatic Society. From the first appearance of the fairies CAct 2, Scene lj to the general awakening QAct 4, Scene lj the play is a dream, and therefore full of puckish mis- understanding and strange incongruity. After the return to common day, we hear the very tragical mirth of the one and only performance of The Tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe, but when the players have withdrawn and the lovers have gone bcdxvards, the fairies come tripping back, and We are left wondering and rubbing our eyes, uncertain where reality ends and fantasy begins.
