Themed around a Two Different Worlds idea, Women ' s Week too, had its Friday assembly wherein the coeds honored preferred men. Coeds lined up early on the morning when they could prefer their own preferred man and send him an invitation for the semiformal dance. 29

Women ' s Week proved popular among campus coeds... men too! Sadie Goes Swansdown themed baking event. Women ' s Week was among the most popular of the activities that crowded the winter social calendar. Sponsored by the Associated Women Students, the fes- tivities included the campus ' biggest dance, the annual Preference Ball. Over 1500 coeds preferred men for the semi- formal dance, held in six of the largest halls available. In addition to the Friday night dance, each day of the preceding week emphasized an aspect of BYU coeds ' life, including culture nights, bak- ing contests, fashion shows, and schol- astic honor nights. Coeds awarded the Most Preferred honor to ten campus men in what was probably the year ' s largest popularity contest. Judy Green was one of the many coed models who participated in the fashion show. 28

3 ! Contestants demonstrated social dance skill. Leslie Clark did the can-can for her talent. First place winner in dance was Julie Paull. IK-YC sponsored Belle of the Y search for ideal coed on campus The Y Calcares and Intercollegiate Knights sponsored Belle of the Y Week, in which a series of contests endeavored to pick a coed to be Belle of theY who was endowed with as many as possible of the ideal traits of womanhood. After the usual week of contests covering a number of areas, the points were added and the IK ' s lighted the chosen girl ' s initials beside the flaming Y on the hillside. The contest is a tradition dating from 1949 when it was initiated as part of a fund- raising project to finance the building of the bell tower. The contest has since remained after the erection of the tower in 1959. More than forty coeds were nominated to be contestants, the number being re- duced by the selectivity of each succeeding contest until only the five finalists remained. Then the Belle and her two attendants were select- ed by studentbody vote. 30
