The Cougar Marching Band led the parade down University Avenue on a crisp, clear morn- ing. Homecoming Committee members included, Front row. Rebecca Dav, Pat Ford, Dianne Dredge, Susan Woodcock, Gaylon Hopkins. Back row: Robert Parsons, Dwayne Wight, Chairman Daniel R. Lau, Jeff Willis, John Jex. Near tragedies appeared comical after ' 62 festivities came to end - There ' s a saying that goes, Comedy is tragedy viewed from a dis- tance. Homecoming, likewise, had its near tragedies that from a dis- tance take on the aspects of comedy. Chairman Lau spent the busy preparatory week immediately preceding the actual Homecoming in the Health Center with bronchitis. Mechanical difficulties occurred, too. The car pulling the Sweepstakes float made by the sophomore class ran out of gas during its halftime exhibition. When the car scheduled to carrv the Four Preps in the parade Saturday morning failed to arrive, the Preps quicklv rounded up four bicvcles for themselves and pedaled the parade route. The finale of the Homecoming assembly included Honeybun from South Pacific. Students with outstretched arms were a part of the variety show Fieldhouse Frolics witnessed by nearly 10,000. The Four Preps appeared in one of this season ' s Homecoming events. 25

This snow came to campus two months after Winter Carnival was scheduled and had taken place. Antics provoked hilarity when assembly players followed the script prepared for them. Members of Winter Carnival assembly cast helped to spin a webb of fantasy on stage. No snow marked Winter Carnival -George Shearing came anyway Winter Carnival was always planned for the weeks when snow should have been the most plentiful, but due to repeated miscalculations or the unaccountable whims of the weatherman, the Carnival Week al- ways found the campus brown and dry. There was no snow sculpture contest whatsoever held in conjunction with the 1963 Carnival. By the time the big snow came, late in March, all enthusiasm had van- ished. However, this did not hamper the other planned festivities scheduled for the second week of January. Students proficient in winter sports competed for Carnival royalty, and from them a court was selected to reign over other planned activities. The incomparable jazz pianist, George Shearing, staged a concert for the studentbody. There was a hockey game, the student assembly, and a dance reigned over by Donna McKay and Stan Dunn, the selected king and queen. The snowless Winter Carnival was fast becoming a Brigham Young University tradition. 26
