Education search lost in seeking friends, interests foreign to self -- Students pondered over campus politicals. The search for higher education was often lost when students came together on campus from all parts of the world. With so many cultures and environ- ments represented, any student found it hard not to become fascinated and in- terested in new friends and new ways of living. Whether it was in the library, on the lawn, or in the middle of some campus activity, students seemed to search out the unusual and enlighten- ing. In fact many became so involved in the extra-curricular that their class studies went begging. Some even drop- ped out of school or were asked not to return. Nevertheless, the out-of-class activites proved to be a form of higher education very important to those who participated. Even though the Clark Library seemed satur- ated with books, there was room for 600,000 more. 12

Held once a week in the im- mense George Albert Smith Fieldhouse, the Devotionals featured outstanding men in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since the Devotional meetings were held in place of one class, % hour credit was offered to stu- dents who attended them regularly. Campus music groups usually added lyrical inspiration to the meetings. A special Devotional was held during the week of April Conference at which bishops from all over the world were honored. Combined choruses and the Symphony Orchestra presented excerpts from their California tour for the Bis- hop ' s Day Devotional. After the conclu- sion of the Devotional, students were able to meet with the Bishops from their home wards. Noted civic and Church leader, Elder Harold B. Lee, also of the Quorum of the Twelve, spoke. Maughan McMurdie led the Devotional audience in an opening song.
