v PUS TOUR is led by Parker, who explains to 3US frosh that the oJd •II Is sounded by IK ' s after a Cougar victory. a week of orientation A record 3191 freshmen faced a bewildering battery of psychological exams, placement tests and intelligence quizzes during this year ' s Orientation Week. Incoming students were taken on campus tours in between exams, or were shuttled from one orientation meeting to another as upperclassmen explained the functions of the honor code, the student government, and everything connected with the efficient running of a complex university. A pep rally preceding the first football game, an outside dance hela in the Fieldhouse parking lot, and an assembly themed around BY wants You were planned activities for them, while Frosh Talent night gave them an oppor- tunity to participate in their first college assembly as they sang, danced . . . and juggled tables. SIGNING UP newcomers, Mar Johnson receives Betty Clark and Carol Gleason during the week. COMMITTEE MEMBERS were, BACK ROW: Dr. Henry L. Chuck Hobbs was the chairman. BALANCER Heinz Hubler awed students by balancing on his chin tables, cups, chairs, even bicycles.

SUNRISE SERVICES set mood for coming year. planning on a big year One hundred fifty student leaders and faculty members met before school started this year to outline a successful student government and to become acquai ' nted with each other. Held in Bryce Canyon National Park, Leadership Week was keynoted by Harvey L. Taylor, Executive As- sistant to the President of the University. Behold Eter- nity was chosen as the theme of the conference, and special emphasis was put upon the importance of laying a good foundation for better things to come. The pro- gram featured information sessions, games and singing. Dr. Henry L. Isaksen, Student Coordinator, was in charge of the meeting, and Lyn n Richards of the LDS Church Sunday School Board was a featured speaker. Highlight of the meet was a sunrise service on Inspiration Point, where participants gathered before dawn in one of America ' s most beautiful National Parks. TAKING HELM of school, leaders planned for a year of advance- ment. WELCOMING COUPLE, president Taylor greets LeRoy and LaRae PeeL hello was the best word Brigham Young University became the largest church affiliated university In the ' nation in relation to full time students when the results of fall quarter registration were tabulated. A total of 8116 students registered. With an enrollment increase of 72% since 1950, the University launched into a new program of streamlining graduation requirements to handle the load. The increase has also resulted In a $16 million building expansion program. One healthy sign of the increase was that it was con- centrated In upper classes while freshman registration continued about normal in Increase. Registration pro- cedure at best is hectic, but necessary, as students check with housing, traffic, or counseling. Efforts to streamline the procedure were boosted when Dean Bliss Crandall was placed in charge of registration and assumed his duties as Dean of Admissions and Records. WELCOME BACK assembly is Univer- sity ' s official greeting to returning stu- dents, who are seated by home state or country in year ' s biggest grouping. 26
