4i ALT HA 1 Bridgewaler State College Bridgewater, Massachusetts IN MEMORIAM Life is a series of moments each livened by the spirit which fill them, making some merely shadows dwarfed in the setting sun of the day. Each is to be cherished for its existence as life is too short and priceless to be wasted. It is the way which we fill every minute prescribes how successful our lives will be. Courage, determination, strength, fun, laughter, and competitive spirit blended together give an accurate picture of how Candy lived, and how she was known to her friends. Knowing the future, she did not shrink from her activities, or bemoan her fate— she accepted life and did not let on to others around her the seriousness of her condition. She concentrated on living; she was strong, yes, but more, she knew that her life had to be filled with joy and recreation in order for her to meet the day. It has often been said that death comes too early to the good; in the case of Candance Cowen we know this is true. But we should not dwell on the sorrowful, and untimely death, but rather, we should remember the courage, smile, and warmth of a friend that no time can replace. FOREWORD Alpha ' 69 is a unique presentation to Bridgewater State College as the first orig- inal book for the entire student campus. It encompasses each phase of student life and its activities. It is not designed or dedicated to one particular class, but to the entire Bridgewater State College community. In it we have endeavored to capture the thrill of the sliding steal, the cries of tri- umph, Tuesday nights at the CC, and the silent moments that no one can ever describe, but are so much a part of learning. We have portrayed the days of hardships and re- wards, chances lost and won, and the spirit that makes our college the institution that it is. In future years, long after we have departed from the classroom, this book will serve to remind us of those years, friends, and teachers whose guidance have made permanent memories in our minds. The 1969 ALPHA serves as a living memory of those years when we were stu- dents at Bridgewater State College. But behind this stereotype— the leaders of an institution. Often the brunt of criticism, they are the organiz- ers and the foundation of the school. Their hope of enlightenment goes beyond building a curriculum; they seek to combine the best of teacher prep- aration and liberal arts programs to attain a modern school, retaining the atmosphere of a small college. They have succeeded well, though much remains to be done. As counselor, arbitrator, leader, and advisor, the people in Academics have preserved the best of two worlds. They are appreciated. Lynne Briscoe, Academics Editor 20 President Adrian Rondileau In a time of campus confusion and unrest it is difficult, often impos- sible to be a college president. Yet, Adrian Rondileau ascends this tur- moil to transform Bridgewater State College from a small, teacher Normal school to a modern expanding Liber- al Arts college. Constantly concerned with the welfare of the student body, Presi- dent Rondileau has expanded the student power to give action to their demands. It is his aim to produce a college community which serves all its students. It is neither an easy, nor a re- laxing task; it demands time and self- sacrifice. Adrian Rondileau, our pres- ident, gives of himself in meeting the challenge. He is the symbol of our college; and we are proud to have him. 21 Lee Harrington— Academic Dean Henry Werner— Assistant to the President David Deep— Dean of Men 22 Genevieve Ash— Residence Counselor Ellen Shea— Dean of Students Martha Drinkwater— Assistant Dean of Women 23 V. His wit, knowledge, and most importantly, the inspiration he gives to his students has qualified Mr. Benjamin Spence for this award. It is seldom, and therefore cherished, when college students, packed into mammoth size classes, and crowded rooms, have the privilege of knowing a teacher such as Mr. Spence. In the words of Henry Adams, A teacher affects eternity,- he never can tell where his influence stops. 29 30 32 33 £.- - ;v W Organizations This is mine— this is me?!— Yes. 200 students sharing one prof what droppings of knowledge can I hope for? Sports The thrill of an October victory on the gridiron, the burst of energy in a sprint over the last hurdle, and the scrape of the sliding steal to home plate, caused many quickened heartbeats at the Bears ' activities. The 1968-69 sports season gave Bridgewater State fans the elation of victory, the agonies of defeat, and the spirit to improve even when triumphant. In any contest it is not the win or lose score that matters, but how the game is played. The coaches and student body may be proud of their athletes, and of the determination and sportsmanship which the men manifest- ed both on and off the playing field. The Bears, under the direction of new head Coach Peter Mazzaferro, compiled an impressive 5-3 record. The Bears opened their 1968 campaign by handing Curry College a 47-1 4 setback. It was the highest offensive output in the history of Bridgewater football, scoring 7 touchdowns and accumulating 541 yards total offense. Sophomore halfback, Jim Federico set a school record by scoring 4 touchdowns. George Sullivan, another sopho- more, accounted for 250 yards total offense. Maine Maritime Academy outlasted Bridgewater handing them their first defeat by a score of 14-7. This was a roughly fought game with the result in doubt until the very end. A jolting 93 yard touchdown gallop by George Sullivan, nullified by a penalty hurt the comeback attempt. The Bears won its second game in three outings by dousing Frostburg State 1 3-7. The game was a defen- sive battle in which the Bears ' hard-nosed defense rose to the occasion time after time to thwart a threatening Frost- burg drive. The difference was Bridgewater ' s recovery of six Frostburg fumbles. Quarterback Paul Stella capitalized on 2 for touchdowns; he scored with a one yard plunge, and threw a 24 yard touchdown pass to George Sullivan for the second. 156 Bob Woodman makes a valiant try. T Paul Stella sets to hand off to Bob Woodham against Bates. Bridgewater achieved its third victory of the season by beating Quonset Naval Base 34-8 on a rain- soaked field. Four backs crashed in the scoring. Quar- terback Paul Stella, fullback Bob Woodman, and half- back Richie Roath scored. Woodman recovered an im- portant fumble and trapped the quarterback for a loss on several stunts. Considering the poor field condi- tions this proved to be the best the team had looked at this point in the season. Bridgewater won its third game in a row and fourth of the season by trampling Nichols 34-6. After a score- less first quarter the offensive machine was thrown into full gear by tallying 6, 15, and 13 points in the remaining quarters. Bridgewater ' s total offense was 451 yards while the stubborn defense held Nichols to 198 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Paul Stella played his best game to date. He connected on 1 1 of 16 passes for 165 yards, with scoring strikes of 6, 14, and 80 yards. 157 Defense: Bridgewater Style 158 Leon fires up the Bears ' defense. Offense blasts for 756 points ■v. The winning came to a jarring halt, as the Bears were shocked by Brockport State University 61-0. This was Brockport ' s last game of the season and showed no mercy by leaving in the starting team the entire game. Brockport has always been the Bears ' nemesis since the two teams first met. In the six years that they have played, Bridgewater has never been able to applaud a victory. The Bears rebounded against tough Geneva College. Once again Bridgewater found itself in the winner ' s column with a 14-12 victory This was an essential victory because it gave the team a winning season and got the players ready for the Bates game. Mm There were many ded- icated men who added to the Bears ' explosive offense. But perhaps the most exciting combination was the long bomb from Stella to Matheson. 161 All They Had - All the Time The game was close. Bridgewater dominated the first half, scoring 14 points while Geneva came back with a 12 point fourth quarter. The winning difference was Phil LeFavor ' s stopping of both Geneva ' s runs after touchdown. Bridgewater ended the year on the short end of a 43-7 score to Bates College before a large Homecoming crowd. After dropping behind quick- ly 21-0 in the first quarter the Bears fought back and scored once and threatened several more times in the first half. mHW n H«mnng 162 Despite the loss to Bates, Coach Mazza- ferro has bright hope for the future. The team will miss Captain Paul Stella through gradua- tion, but he is the only one going. The entire coaching staff feel that next year should be even better. At a December meeting of the New England Football Conference the coaches selected five Bridgewater players for the all Conference Team ; they include Bill Matheson, end; Leon Weinstein, guard; Paul Stella, quarter- back; Bob Woodman, fullback; and George Sul- livan, halfback. 163 Cross Country Despite a lack of depth, the Bridgewater State Cross Country Team compiled a 7 wins— 8 losses record. Coach Tom Knudson felt that if the team had more experienced runners the record would have been better. One of the highlights of the year was the emerg- ence of freshman Corey Powers as the outstanding runner on the team. Prospects of the future could establish Bridgewater as one of the strong cross country teams in this region. The team will miss seniors Bruce Nelson, Captain, and Steve Wirtzberger; both have contributed to the success of the team over the past four years. His career average was about 15 points and 12 rebounds per game. This year we also got a big boost from two fantastic freshmen, Sam Mitchell and Bill Montiero. There were team con- tests in flag-football, basketball and soft- ball, and meets in track, swimming, and free-throwing. The contests were and the battles hard. Few teams won a championship unscathed. The Valley Boys were the flag- football champs. And in the basketball program, the Avengers won a closely contended title. The softball season, like the others, produced some very inter- esting team names. Among them, the Hogs proved to be worthy of their name. Terry Papas won the trophy in the free-throw contest, and there were several winners in the track and swim meets with many new records being set. i jsr ftfr S 176 177 Determination Often, women ' s sports are excluded in a yearbook, but Bridgewater is proud of her sportswomen and this year finds an appropri- ate place to remember her female athletes. Success came in many ways to various teams; a rousing lacrosse team, an undefeated basketball team, an exquisite Aqubryte performance, a near miss in the finals of the State Volleyball Championship, and a field hockey team obliv- ious to defeat, only to mention a few of the challenges. This section on women ' s sports is entitled DETERMINATION and is dedicated to Candace Cowen, a colleague and friend who was the epitome of what this section typlifies. Candy was challenged early in life by the inevitable, and with courage and determination she faced the match. It was her mark at this college to become sportswoman, friend, and student of whom this college can justly be proud. To use the words of a great sage: For when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name ... He writes . . . not that you won or lost . . . but how you played the Game. Teams like Eastern Conn. State and Salem State proved to be too strong for our young team to handle. Our hitting was strong and should have been more than ade- quate, but lack of depth in pitching was our weak point. One young pitcher, though, did an excellent job. This was freshman Ed Jarvis. He was backed up by some strong seniors, namely Paul Stella and Dick Copello, Co-Captains, and Ken Dobkin. All in all, it was not a great sea- son, but the spirit and attempt was there. The Senior year has come to a close and the degrees have been awarded. But our affiliation with the college as well as our education, has not come to an end; we are alumni of the oldest and finest teacher preparation college in the United States. We have become more knowledgable— some of the lectures did make sense, some of the facts did inspire our imagination, some of the pro- fessors did make lasting impressions and will be fondly remembered. We stand now at the pinnacle of our education, the epitome of learning and study. The challenge of learning was not always easy, but the reward for having tried is ours. The worlds that have been opened to us as under- graduates will never again be closed.
