Light il- lumines beauty and enables creatures to perform the actions of living. Heat radiates and penetrates, giving warmth and vibrancy to all living things. fust as the sun sustains life on earth, the sun of Briarcliff sustains the life of the school. Where does this sun come from? Everywhere. Its presence is felt through the students, the faculty, and the administration. The sun of Briarcliff glows brightly. The light comes not only from the fluorescent bulbs in the building, but also from glowing faces of students after a victory, or from the teacher who taught a difficult lesson well, or from the principal after receiving praise for the school. First-to guide. Is there a greater responsibility? The wandering mind of youth, malleable, unformed, enters the labyrinth' of knowledge and may be lost if not prop- erly guided. Management of the school is placed in the hands of the administration. There are always schedules to be ad- justed, tests to be supervised, and those who defy school rules and regulations to be dealt With. All problems ter- minate in the offices of the administration, whether it be a studentls problem or a problem student. Capable minds are chal- lenged with managing the unruly, governing those who protest government, and guiding those who know no direction. I6 l MR. ANSLEY H. Robert South once said, uHe that governs well leads the blind, but he that teaches him gives him eyes. This might be applied to the teachers of English at Briarcliff High School, who are highly competent in subject matter and in the methods that deal with the teaching of the spoken and of the written word. One characteristic of the group is the striving toward unity of purpose-the purpose of which is to help pupils become more effective in the use of the English language through the art of listening, speaking and writing. A prime objective of the English teachers is to awaken in pupils an appreciation for great works of literature and their authors. Although win- ning only one game, the Barons had their moments of brilliance- the first half against Druid Hills, segments of the Clarkston game, and the Decatur game. Perhaps the season,s outstanding game was Homecoming against Decatur, the region champions. From the opening kick-off the Barons dominated the game, and when the final whistle blew, Briarcliff had won 14-13. Due to a good team effort and fine coaching leadership this foot- ball season will long be remembered. Coaches: Left to Right: Frank Hixon, Clyde Steen, Herb Schutte, .lim Minyard. A .ft X Young Talent Assures Future Success This was Briarttliflls first year in AAA competition. The transition from AA to AAA lvaskethall was not easily macle. The floor play and hall hanclling were perlormetl with more skill, hut the shooting game never reached the peak neeflecl to Compete in our region, which had three teams in the quarter finals ol the state tournament. At the close of a relatively successful season we hurl won 10 games and lost l3. 'llhere are great hopes for the baslietliall program in the near future. Now training are some trernenclously talcntecl young lmoys with a great mlesire to cleyelop their skill. The B-'lleam ancl Eighth Gratlo haxe Con- sistently improyetl mluring the season. WRESTLING AT BRIARCLIFF: 1962-1963 Briarcliff, once again, had a highly successful wrestling team. The 'tRaiders', were undefeated in dual competition, finishing the season with a 10-0 record. They bettered their 1962 performance by taking first place in the DeKalb County Wrestling Tournament, first place in the State preliminaries, and then fought their way to the State Championship. The Raiders7, also received the second place trophy in the Georgia-Alabama meet. Outscoring their opponents 441 to 88 in dual meets, 135 to the second place team,s 88 in the county meet, the varsity team demolished the competition in the State preliminaries and outscored their nearest state opponent 110 to 69. The uBruisers,,' perpetual winners, posted another out- standing record. Their previous spotless record in dual com- petition was marred by Avondale, who manager to squeeze by 28-27. This defeat only acted as an incentive, however, and the determined '4Bruisers7' roared through the DeKalb B-Team Tournament smashing their nearest county competi- tor 134 to 85. Briarcliffis third team, the Mat Burnsf' composed mostly of eighth-graders and first-year wrestlers, were undefeated this year. They compiled a record of 4 wins, no losses. This new supply of wrestling material should keep Briarcliff strong for years to come. GEORGIA STATE CHAMPIONS-L-R: Larry Wiggins, Steve Codlewski, Mike Swanson, Bucky Harrelson, Donnie Massey. Head Coach IOS FRANK HIXON As in previous seasons the girls dominated the Briarcliff swimming team. They have continued to place high in all their meets. The boys are not to go without due credit for they made commendable gains over last year's records. The girls' team placed second in the Southeastern Swimming and Diving Championship, only two points below first place Westminis- ter. In their only dual meet this year they out stroked Sandy Springs. In the State meet they took the second place trophy to step down from the championship. Of thirty-three teams in the state competition our hoys placed eighth, overshadowing their loss to the Sandy Springs swimmers. Under the fine leadership of Coach Frank Hixon, Briarcliff has high hopes of bettering their excellent record. You young men and women who compose this graduating class are leaving behind at Briarcliff a record that will be a chal- lenge for all those who follow you. This record is not just a record of academic achievement, although many of you have received scholarships and other tributes to the quality of your classroom work. Neither is your record primarily one of athletic achievement, although your class has produced superior athletes in football, basketball, baseball, track and wrestling. Instead, your record at Briarcliff is a composite of many things, no one of which is truly exceptional, but which together add up to a standard of excellence by which following classes will be measured. You could brag about your national merit scholar- ship finalists, but more important as a mark of academic maturity is the fact that your class has remained serious and respon- sible through this senior year. You have supported the total school program and worked together for the special activities you wanted. You have enjoyed your dances and parties, even eating barbecue outside in freezing weather. Most important of all, you have never lost faith in yourselves and your abilities. Perhaps this has best been shown on the athletic field. Remember the Decatur football game? Do you remember the way you felt that night, whether, you were one of the players or in the stands cheering? That feeling of pride is something you have helped to build at Briarcliff. For the honor they bring to Briarcliff we salute them. l88 as STAR Student and STAR Teacher. On December 4, 1962, The Betty Crocker Homemaking Test of knowledge and aptitude was administered to all in- terested Senior girls. Betsy McBride had the highest score of those entering and was thus chosen Briareliffs Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow, which made her eligible for state and perhaps national competition. At the Leaders Banquet sponsored by the Key Club, Shielc The Georgia Chamber of Commerce STAR Student award, in recognition of the Senior making the highest score on the December College Board SAT, goes to Penny Penland. M-rs. Hester Means was chosen hy Penny as the person who has contributed the most to her education, having been her mathematics teacher for three years. Because of the learning and teaching abilities of these two people, we honor them 200 students holding commanding positions in school clubs and activities chose as Leader of the Year for 1962-63 the same boy that the Decatur Optimist Club chose as Boy of the Year from Briarcliff. JIS 1 One Senior member of the student body is chosen by the faculty to receive a citizenship medal given by the Daughters of the Ameri- can Revolution. This year that medal went to the President of the Pep Club, captain of the Cheerleaders, and Vice-President of the Student Government. Our congratula- tions go to Lynn Patrick, DAR Citizen of the Year. Salutes The challenging academic program at Briarcliff was again reflected by its eight National Merit Scholarship Finalists. For their excellent scholastic achievement we proudly recognize Shcriy Vernon, Charles Churchman, Taylor Bink- ley, Rich Ernst, Corky Corcoran, Joyce lrwin, Aita Kivivare, and Penny Penland. .leff Maxey is not only a member of the Key Club, but also Editor of the KEY RING, the official publication of the Georgia District of Key Club International. It is fitting that we recognize .leff for this far reaching posi- tion of leadership. Few wrestlers have the honor of holding the State Championship. When an individual re- tains this title for three consecutive years he deserves special recognition. For this ex- ceptional athletic distinction, we salute a co- captain of our wrestling team, Bucky Harrel- SOIL Andy Guy, sophomore halfbaek, received honorable mention on the North Georgia All'Star Teamg Mike Swanson, senior center, State All-Star Team, and Horace Coza, Senior end, honorable mention on both. We commend these boys for their performance this season. The Future Teachers of America Club has chosen as Teacher of the Year a man whom they feel cpitomizes those qualities necessary for excellent instruction. He maintains disciplinary con- trol based upon a mutual feeling of respect. He pos- sesses the highest profession- al ethics and actively par- ticipates in professional or- ganizations. His concern for the welfare of both students and fellow faculty members is readily seen. His broad knowledge of subject matter makes his class not only in- teresting, but also very worth- while. Wc salute a teacher dedicated to the principals of learning-Mr. Charles Clack. All things that have happened, during this day are now memories, destined to fade gradually until they return only briefly with other fond recollec- tions of times past. i The sunset brings not only the memory of yesterday, but also the promise of tomorrow. With the dawn we will face a different world, anticipating what lies ahead, and cherishing that which lies behind. No matter what paths we follow or what goals we attain, the sunset will always be there opening the door that loosens these cherished thoughts, evoking nostalgia and perhaps affgw tears for days that can never return.
