He aTTended Naval Officer CandidaTe School and was commissioned as an Ensign May 8, 4970. His firsT Tour of duTy was as ASW and Nuclear Weapons Officer aboard USS WILTSIE CDD-7465 in San Diego, Ca. In 4974 he compIeTed DEEP SEA DIVING AND SALVAGE OFFICER SCHOOL and was assigned as Operafions Officer and ship's Diving Officer aboard USS BOLSTER CARS-385 in Pearl Harbor from 4972 To 4974. In 4975, afTer compleTion of Desfroyer School, he was assigned as OperaTions Officer aboard USS MARVIN SHIELDS CFP-40669 in San Diego, Ca. In 4977 he reporTed To USS BRUNSWICK CATS-33 in Pearl Harbor as ExecuTive Officer. ReporTing To NAVY POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL in 4979, he graduaTed wiTh a MasTers of Science Degree in Manpower ManagemenT. Prior To reporTing To USS BREWTON, Commander Gardner was assigned To The STaff of DCNO for MANPOWER, Personnel and TRAINING as a Manpower AnalysT in OP-43 Then OP-42. Commander Gardner has been awarded The Navy CommendaTion Medal and various uniT, campaign and service medals.
