On this tour we shall try to show you every phase of high-school life as we have known it here at Brewster. As you go through the pages of our Tabard, the days of knighthood and chivalry will come alive when you view these scenes of our school life. We feel saddened at the thought of leaving our school, so please be patient if we stop to reminisce over all the friendships we have made, the good times we have had, the experiences we have shared working on extra-curricular activities, and the fine education for which we have all studied so diligently. Soon we will be starting out on unknown roads, A each taking a different avenue, Yet we shall never forget our fruitful years at Brewster where we prepared ourselves for the future. 306014 QSWR 4517 0 tib ia ZA gf 4 QFEB MS Q ,s K2 Zl'llgl 5. 199 .ZLL of Confenfi Introduction .. ROGERS MRS. VINCENT D. ROGERS Principal B.S., Dartmouth University of New Hampshire ,gn lalareciafion It is with a feeling of deepest regret that the class of 1959 and all the underclassmen of Brewster Academy bid farewell to Mr. Vincent D. Rogers, principal of the Academy for seventeen years. He has been to all a strong leader, a patient guide, and a firm friend. The position of principal is the most important iob in high school administra- tion, for it is the principal who has the future lives of the students in his hands. He guides them in their preparation for college and makes the recommendations that so strongly determine their chances of admission. Under Mr. Rogers' administration, students from Brewster have been accepted at some of the finest colleges in the country. On the other hand, not all students go on to college. Some pass directly into their live's vocations from high school. The principal must prepare these students with all the vigor at his command to face the world and become good, strong citizens, each a credit to his school. Since Mr. Rogers came to Brewster, the school's enrollment has doubled, and under his administration there have been several campus improvements. The field behind the school and the newly-seeded soccer field are now green and pleasant. Improvements within the school building include new chemistry and physics laboratories, equipped with the best facilities. Other improvements are the new dining room and the fine new gymnasium, one of the bestvin the state. Under Mr. Rogers' direction, the industrial arts course, art, advanced mathematics, advanced Latin, and French lll courses have all been added to the curriculum. The athletic stature of the school has also grown through the initiation of the Lakes Region Prep-School League, in the forming of which Mr. Rogers played a prominent part. All through these seventeen fruitful years Mr. Rogers has had by his side a wife with a keen interest in the Academy. Mrs. Rogers has worked diligently and willingly at her tasks without desiring to be in the limelight and often without receiving due thanks. To both Mr. and Mrs. Rogers we wish the happiness they so richly deserve. May we show our heartfelt appreciation to them by following their examples of diligence, dignity, and wisdom. Mis a Lgv wr' ff 36 Cfcwa .Maier On the Wednesday following Labor Day in September, 1955, seventy-three freshmen began the first of four eventful years at Brewster Academy. Mr. Tinker, Mr. Lavery, and Miss Farrow served as our advisors, keeping our wild ideas under control and helping us to plan our activities throughout the year. Shortly after school opened, the class elections were held, and we elected Bruce Williams as our president, Jim Shannon as our vice-president, Nancy Rich our treasurer, and Wenda Thompson our secretary. The class of 1959 received the award for the most humorous float in the homecoming parade. Our masterpiece bore the title of The Freshman Revolution. Suddenly that long-awaited night was at hand when we were to be formally initiated into the academy. Filled with apprehension, we gathered in the gymnasium on October 22 to face whatever the seniors had in store for us. We met the crisis honorably, however, and the next morning we were all back in school, none the worse for our ordeal. Several members of the class served admirably as tackling dummies, music racks, and targets. in general for the more able and co-ordinated upperclassmen on the athletic fields. We were represented in soccer, football, band, baseball, basketball, hockey, glee club, softball, and the ski team, too. Inevitably June finally arrived and.we bid farewell to our friends for the summer. Tanned and happy we returned to Brewster in September, 1956, for the beginning of our sophomore year. It was good to see old friends again and meet new ones and compare our experiences of the past summer. We quickly got into the swing of things with the help of our advisors, Mr. Whalen and Mr. Hines. This year our officers were: President, Jim Shannon, Vice-President, Kilburn Culley, Secretary, Wenda Thompson, Treasurer, Joyce Goodwin. Again we won awards for our floats in the homecoming parade. We had floats for the Sadie Hawkins Dance, the Roman Banquet, and a record hop. Our class held many a Friday night record hop and sock hop. At the insistence of Mr. Whalen, the boys attempted to put on a dance by themselves, and to the surprise of everyone, they succeeded admirably. The Roman Banquet was our biggest undertaking. We spent several afternoons decorating the gym for the event which was highly successful, both from the financial and entertainment points of view. Again this year members of our class upheld our honor by showing their increasing skills on the athletic fields and in the other extra-curricular activities. It was really surprising to see how much better we had become in a year's time. Then before we knew it, June was on us again, and school was dismissed for another summer vacation. We began our Junior year with these capable officers: President, Jim Shannon, Vice-President, Leslie Nute, Secretary, Wenda Thompson, and Treasurer, David Kay. One of the first money-making schemes of the class this year was a food sale for which the girls either braved the dangers of the kitchen or called upon mother's long experience. The traditional Junior Prom, for which we had an island theme, was the greatest of the class activities, with everyone either involved in making decora- tions, stringing lights, selling bids, or providing refreshments. This also was the year when we all had to save our pennies to buy the eagerly anticipated class rings. Our class was well-represented in all the different sports again and many of the Juniors blended their voices in with the other members of the glee clubs. The class iournalists were on the Brewster Briefs and Bobcat's Beat staffs, and people soon learned not to be surprised if they came around a corner and had their pictures taken by Whit Turner, Ken Mitchell, or Sue Butterworth, all members of the Photo Club. Jane Clow and Kilburn Culley were selected to represent the school at the Model United Nations held at Plymouth Teachers College and they did a very commendable iob. Marcia Bickford received the United States History Award, and Leslie Nute won the Harvard Prize. We were aided that year by our capable advisors: Mr. Gagne, Mr. Hurst, Mr. Scott, and Mr. Davignan. The final and most memorable event of our Junior year was moving down in the Chapel Hall and taking the front seats of the Seniors after Last Chapel. Our final year at Brewster Academy got off to a good start with the elections of Jim Shannon as President and Lee Nute as Vice-President. Peggi Reissfelder became our new Secretary, and Marcia Bickford our Treasurer. The biggest undertaking of the class this year was the production of the TABARD. The stalf worked long and hard on this task. The annual Christmas Dance was another proiect of the Senior Class, and also, of course, the Senior Play, .lust Ducky, which was a great success. Again this year we were well represented sports wise. The members of the soccer team surely will' never forget the practice game in which Sam Niblett kicked the ball and knocked Lee Nute unconscious. Jane Clow broke the record for total scoring for the season in girls' basketball with a great 296 points. Also'a large part of the glee clubs was made up of seniors, and so was the Brewster Briefs staff. Our advisors were Mrs. Tilton, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Maclver. We had the annual beach party at Brewster Beach given by Mr. and Mrs. Rogers. The hot dogs were as good as evere and of course everyone ate plenty of sand. At last Chapel many atl1letic awards were given out, and Kilburn Culley presented Mr. Whalen with the TABARD. Then on Class Day we all laughed over the Class Prophecy then marched out to hear the Ivy Address. The alumni dance and banquet held that night was enioyed by all. The following morning we attended the Baccalaureate Service, and in the afternoon of June 14, 1959 we received our diplomas and turned our separate ways, confident that our years at Brewster were as fruitful as we could have ever wanted them. 37 x X-wwf J x . N .,svs' in Our TABARD would not be complete without including the undergraduates, passing through the molding years, the stepping stones to the future. We look back and see ourselves one, two, and three years ago, sharing the same experiences, undertaking the same activities and responsibilities. We remember the Roman Banquet, the .Iunior Talent Show, the Junior Prom, and of course, all the courses of study we followed. We now salute the efforts of these underclassmen and dedicate this section of the TABARD to them, our fellow members of the student body, who will very soon take our place as the graduating classes. 39 vj- 'f,.1 -- W ,,. .a- H fl!!! Probably the two most exciting games of the year were the season's opener , in which the boys beat Exeter for the first time in a decade, and the season's finale , in which they handed New Hampton its only defeat of the year in football and captured for Brewster the 1958 Lakes Region Prep School Football Championship. To this clay we can picture in our minds Kirby Flanagan and Jim Edgerly, Brewster's Touchdown Twins , racing down the field at top speed for the goal posts, Jim Twombly pulling back to let go another well-aimed pass, the pigskin sailing through the air after one of Bob Carpenter's powerful kicks, and all the feats of the other members of this really great team. Mr. Murphy headed up the trio of coaches, with Mr. Maclver and Mr. Richer being the other two. To them and to the co-captains, Matt Collins and Bob Carpenter, we owe a debt of gratitude which we cheerfully pay for the excellent job they did of building Brewster a championship team in '58, 49 Halfback kick from the side line Getting instructions from Coach Vaughan Driving for the goal Niblett brings it up the side Fancy leg work Half time break 50 2nd Row: Managers Solomon and Thomas, Walker, Nute, Leitner, C. Ably led by co-captains Jim Shannon and Jack Pollini, they finished the season with six wins, three losses, and only one tie. Mr. Vaughan's soccer boys are known for their teamwork on the field. Although this pulls them through many a tight second half, it does make the choice of Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player a tough decision. Even so, this year, as usual, the awards were made shortly after the close of the season. The team voted to give the first award to Sam Niblett, and Mr. Vaughan decided to give the second one to Jimmy Clough. ln our discussion let us not forget the younger boys who made up the iunior varsity. In addition to playing in some of the varsity games, these boys also played two games of their own against Holderness and won both of theml The success of this soccer team was greatly due to its Assistant Coach, Bob Bierweiler, and Head Coach, Mr. Vaughan. With their backing, we're sure to have a great team again next year, led by Bob Pollini and Brad Bemis, who have been chosen co-captains. We all know that time must, of course, pass on, and each year some fine boys must leave the squad. Yet when we can look back on the successful season of this year's team, then we can only know that future teams will grow bigger and better from this year's foundations. 5'l Sf ,. f iz? ' . , E V 'i 4' ' ix? Af, l On Friday October 31, while witches and goblins roamed the world at will, the class of 'I962 was herded into the hold of the pirate ship set up in Brewster's gym. The freshmen were brought on deck from the hold by crew members Dave Blackbeard Kay, Lee Long John Nute, and Frank Jean Lafitte Santarpio. Here they were initiated under the watch- ful eye of the ship's captain, Matt Captain Kidd Collins. Some of the tasks assigned to them were giving shampoos, running errands, measuring the gym, and searching for money. The freshmen decided that the pirates were bad cooks because some cookies they were served contained red pepper and chili powder instead of sugar, and the pie that was so generously offered them had a filling of soap. When they learned that they weren't going to be made to scrub decks, polish cannons, or walk the plank, however, they decided that the pirates weren't too bad after all, and when the whipped cream, eggs, and other substances were removed from the freshmen, they were found to be in one piece and dreaming of the day when they will have their chance to apply the accolade's torture test. rid' M. By sponsoring food sales and dances they managed to get pretty, new uni- forms for both the Fall and Winter seasons. Many a Friday morning was bright- ened by the lively display of their talents in the rallies. Yes, these girls certainly deserve a cheer for the gr at iob th have done. Only the memories remain to remind us of our 1959 basketball team. The boys ended the season with a record of nine wins and five losses. Only an early season case of iitters and unfortunate injuries to key players kept the team from retaining the league championship. They lost four straight games after defeating the Plymouth J.V. team in the opener, but from January 13 to the season's end the Brewster quintet won eight games and lost only once, to New Hampton. The high point of the season came when Brewster's Murphymen met the undefeated Phillips Exeter quintet and edged them by one point, 70-69. Manly Solovikos led the attack in the victory and won it with seconds to go by sinking two perfect free throws. The team was led by co-captains John Monahan, who was high scorer with a 22.5 average, and Manly Solovikos. Under them and Coach Murphy everyone on the team worked hard for victory and provided plenty of enioyment and excitement for Brewster during the winter. This team had a very efficient defensive line which deserves credit for excellent teamwork, and special mention should be made of Beth Pearson who got the most rebounds for the line. Next year the team will miss the services of four seniors: Wenda Thompson, Ruth Stevens, Jane Clow, and Marcia Bickford. Yet we're sure they'Il still do a great iob. The J.V. squad held its own this year, too. Donna Wagenfeld won the J.V. high scoring position with 78 points. Although both squads lacked height, they were motivated by strong deter rnination which brought them through with a fifty-fifty season: seven wins and I seven losses. Among the well-fought games we won t soon forget was the one with York, Maine, won on the home court. This was the first time Brewster had defeated York. Games such as this accounted for a highly competitive and thrilling season. Fine leadership was combined in this team with a spirit of really good sportsmanship. 5 In the leading scoring position was Jane Clow with 296 points. Captain Ruth Stevens followed her with 135 points. IQLWH Though the past winter was as rugged as a New England one can be, it brought rain when ski meets were scheduled and snow when they were over. As a result only one of the five meets was held. Unfortunately the team went down to defeat when confronted with Tilton, but individual recognition must 'be given to Alan White, who placed high in the slalom. However, snow came in time for a lot of recreational skiing at the Abernaki Ski Slope. Because of this year's improvements, participation is on the increase. This season the rope was replaced to provide a stronger, more efficient tow. We cannot give too much credit to Mr. Brown, Mr. Whalen, and Mr. Rogers, Jr., under whose direction the slope was fixed up for use and the tow operated on weekends and during vacations. Not only students, but members of the entire community took advantage of the recreation provided. A fun-filled ski party was held by the Sophomore class, which included skiing, sliding, and tobogganing. Everyone had a grand time in spite of the fact that some returned to school in casts and on crutches! The great amount of interest shown this year in the slope indicates that in the coming years it is going to be one of the prime sources of winter-time fun for the people of Wolfeboro and the students of Brewster. The experienced skaters were captained this year by Jack Pollini of Wolfeboro. Robert Carpenter of Peabody, Mass., led the team in scoring with seven goals, but every man on this squad deserves credit for setting siege to the enemy goals constantly. The season started with a iolting 'IO-2 loss to a strong Berlin High team, but Brewster came right back with a 4-1 win over Proctor Academy, a 9-4 win over Holderness, and a 5-2 win again over Proctor. The highlight game of this season was the 3-2 victory over a still strong Berlin High team. This game was one of the most exciting ever seen on Brewster ice. The boys ended the season with a 3-2 loss to New Hampton and a 4-3 loss to Holderness School. Under the direction of the coach, Mr. Whalen, the able management of William Fay, and with plenty of usable ice, Brewster's well-balanced team proved to be a tough and willing competitor for the Lakes Region Title. 61 is M0-f14..,s,,,, .,, ,Q .., i is Q, Ei? we 3rd Row: Manzer, Vedrani, Monahan. 2nd Row: S. Joyce Goodwin and William Fay played the parts of Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell. Connie, their charming and pretty seventeen year old daughter was portrayed by Jane Clow. Wenda Thompson skillfully handled the role of Betty Lou, their fourteen year old daughter, who was cute but a great worry to her parents, and the MaxweIl's son of thirteen, Wilbur, was comically played by Kilburn Culley, Jr. Henry Tutt took the part of Hercules, Wilbur's bosom pal, and the attempts of the two boys at writing their own plays produced some unusual and highly amusing scenes. Suzanne Butterworth con- vincingly dramatized the part of Aunt Mary, an energetic lady of about sixty who was somewhat of an accomplished busybody. Other supporting roles were Margaret Reissfelder as Bernardine, Betty Lou's best friend, Harry Vedrani as Mr. Moore, chairman of the citizens' committee, Sandra Sabin as Miss Blayne, the editor of the local paper's love-lorn column, Arthur Manzer as Del Marshall, a newspaper reporter, and last but by no means least, Barry King, who three days before the performance stepped in and played to perfection the part of Craig Moore, Connie's boy friend, because John Monahan came down with the chicken pox! The success of this comedy cannot be attributed to the acting of the cost alone - that was only part of it. Behind the scenes industrious seniors worked frantically on costuming, lighting, sound effects, prompting, and the numerous other jobs necessary for the production of any play. Of course we must not forget to mention one other very necessary element - the director. Without the guidance and patience of Mrs. Tilton none of this would have been possible. To all who contributed time and material go our deepest thanks for one of the finest plays every presented at Brewster. 63 ef? The voices quaked and the knees shook. The amazingly large number of tenors this year recalled last year's boys' glee club to mind when there were only two! Change your voices . . . squeeeak . . . do something! The rehearsals were long and hard. Afternoons were spent with the girls, and Wednesday nights they had to go it alone. . . Oh how that attendance fluctuated! Lines were sung wrongly and notes were frequently off key. Trouble, trouble, and more trouble. Time was running short, and the concert loomed ahead when suddenly - success! The boys came through with flying colors, and the deep quality of their combined voices brought pleasure to all who listened to such numbers as He's Got The Whole World ln His Hands and Let There Be Music! Excellent solo work was done by Ewart Balcom and Lawrence Coleman. But thanks to the expert pitching of Beverly Roy, this call was made much more often against opposing teams than against Brewster. Coach Nay had a fine group of veterans along with a promising group of rookie players. This year the girls returned to their own field, after having survived the swampy area last year near the lake. With the return of such seasoned veterans as Bonnie Stinch- field, centerfield, Wenda Thompson, left field, Jane Clow, first base, Fenneke ter Weele, shortstop, and Beverly Roy, pitcher, and the addition of such players as Donna Wagenfeld, Linda Davis, and Sandra Massey, these Defenders were all set for another successful campaign. Games were scheduled with Kennett, Alton, and Farmington. There were only two seniors on this year's squad, but the girls made formidable opponents in all their games and proved to be well-versed in all the arts of softball. 69 - Lsex. In one week Mr. Whalen had cut the squad to seventeen, and practice moved into high gear. Coach Whalen was in his fifth year as baseball coach and entered the '59 season with a four-year record of thirty-two wins and only five defeats. His teams have lost but one game in the last two years, winning the Lakes Region Championship both times. This year's team looks good enough to win it again. John Monahan, Gary White, and Wayne Cheney should provide strong starting and relief pitching. The outfield is prob- ably the fastest in the league, with Terry Cotton, Richard Hale, James Edgerly, and Kirby Flanagan guarding the outer gardens. The infield promises to be tight with Samuel Niblett and Walter Tafe at first, Gerald Walker and Gary Ross at second, James Twombly and Robert Doughty at third, and Manly Solovicos and Paul Norton at shortstop. Handling the pitches from behind the plate will be Charles Niblett and Kenneth Blake. lf the team backs its solid fielding with strong bats and tough hitting power, Mr. Whalen could quite possibly add another nine victories to his impressive list. 71 X v X The Brewster Briefs meeting will be held in Room four at three o'clock. This was a familiar announcement made by Mr. Rogers in Chapel Hall every Monday morning. Yes, on Monday afternoons, sandwiched somewhere in between the three o'clock bell and girls' basketball practice, were held the weekly meetings ofthe Briefs staff - meetings?? Well, time enough for the editor, Jane Clow, to give a hurried assignment to a reporter for the following week or to ask if the editorial had been written for this week. What editorial? was the usual reply. Nathan Stevens and James Wilson, Sports Editors and the only boys on the staff, managed to cover all the boys' sports and reach that deadline by three o'clock. Jane somehow survived the ordeal of collecting, re-writing, and proofreading all the news that's tit to print. Mr. Brown, the advisor, was hailed between classes to give the final O.K. to the work. And so another deadline met. But before we knew it, it was Monday again. And off again - producing a Briefs column each week. This years' column, with its weekly editorial, up-to- the-minute news, and first-class coverage of school events proved to be even more enioyable than those appearing in the Granite State News in years past. scribed 2nd Row: Wilson, J. Here they made the necessary decisions on our book's name, theme, and cover design among other things. And many an afternoon did our business managers, Sir Nathan Stevens and Sir Leslie Nute sally forth to storm the fortresses of the local business barons in search of ads, while Lady Joyce Goodwin spent much time and effort in rounding up reluctant seniors for their bouts with the photog- raphers. Then, as all the other members of our fair staff burned the midnight oil doing their writeups, Sir Whit Turner carefully drew the pictures to grace our TABARD'S pages. Mrs. Tilton, our advisor, was constantly lending aid and encouragement and proofreading all the copies which Sir Kib Culley, our editor-in- chief, had typed up. All in all it has been a pretty hectic year for the staff with deadlines constantly popping up, but it has also been a most satisfying experience for us all to write and publish this book, TABARD' 59. 73 BEST LOOKING Jim Shannon Mary Glidden Nr-F enior MOST ROMANTIC Jcne Lompron Bill Chapman MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Lee Nufe Murcia Bickford MOST STUDIOUS Kib Culley Libby Hamilton I LL Qffatllfezf BEST NATURED Harry Veclroni Wendy Wright MOST MUSICAL Vivian Sovord Billy Foy ' 1 BEST DRESSED Wendc: Thompson Jim Shannon CLASS CUT-UPS Frank Sonforpio Jane Lompron MOST ATHLETIC June Clow Jim Edgerly MOST POPULAR Peggy Reissfelder Jim Shonnon 1110-sf? M1963 LAWRENCE ACADEMY, GROTON, MASSACHUSETTS WE, TI-IE CLASS OF 1963, DEDICAT E THIS EDITION OF THE LAWRENCIAN TO: MR. RAYMOND CARTER Consider that I labour not for myself only, but for all those that seek learning. ECCLESIATES 1- -5, g z - fs'-kif -'J-bfi A ' . wi II.. 'Q ik X, Ao X 5f WH A f R-Qu, ff The Lawrence Academy at Groton. Massachusetts oFF czorr E z o sun Time has the habit of flying by so fast that tonnrrow is here and gone before we realize it. The past four years have quickly faded into the pastg and yet we recall vividly the varied experiences we have had here at Lawrence. The jaunty air of the confident senior is quite unlike the timid manner that characterized him when he first arrived upon the campus. The challenging experiences in the academic program have created a background which should stimulate an honest intellectual curiosity. The participation in the recreational activities has developed a physical strength that is extremely essential in the active world of manhood. The social life has offered opportunities to mature with grace and ease. And so the senior goes forth to'college. We wish him well and are confident that he will achieve his goal. His success influences, to some degree, the success of Lawrence for he carries with him the Academy's stamp of approval. To build upon the lessons learned here and to develop into a man of strong integrity is the obligation of each one. It is the duty he owes to himself, to his family, and to his country. As the members of the class of l963 leave the elm tree shaded hillsiden, their places will be filled by others, but never shall we forget the experiences that we have shared together. To the Seniors--Good fortune. 1 I W L R., -.H - V A , 1 1 'Xt EA E ,WR ,QQ I Q is -5 '1 ,i 5. :. 1 5 1 -A 4, :1 ffm lk Y 9 if U, it I 4 5 ' K7 fXg , J A E X ! 4. ,lf ' l 'S 5 1 N54 If P5 in ,4 V rt , ,.f - 1 v ,fp in X VM Mm 'A W 0 N ff u Ny' Q, wx' -X f' , F 5 'fw K I NN N u 'A 4 Q79 ' j fl um H X 'Q y, V ww wk Q 0,6535 A ' A 2 7 if Swv X ,Y ,, Z ,, FACULTY QV' NORINIAN B. The following program goes on the air every evening, Monday through Friday, at this time. The views and opinions of this program do not neces- sarily constitute the views and opinions of the National Broadcasting Company, its management, or its sponsors. Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, this is the N.B.C. Evening Report with Eugene Weeks . . . Good evening, Stu. . . . and yours truly, Stuart Graham. Well, Gene, first on the agenda is the political news. What's going on down in the capital today? This has been a week of serious thought, Stu. Finally, President Gray has ended his series of conferences with Vice-President Chris Hughes and several ollicers from the Pentagon to announce the action they will take against the rebel leader Carlos Fernandez and some of his rowdy followers, such as Hector Rojo who hi- jacked that freighter last week. Oh, yes, the one captained by Mac Grant. Boy! Doesn't he get it all. Yes, they have decided to send out Commander Ladd, that famous naval officer who served with distinction in World War Three, to board the ship and deal with the rebels as he sees fit. Wonderful! But, Gene, has the president had time to settle the troubles with Italy that the State Department has been having? That seems to be out of the way for good, Stu. The head of the lnternational Relations Board, Gary Edlin, has decided to send that popular quartet, Raymond Cioci, jerry DeMichaelis, ,lim Bartlett, and Kevin McGuirk, on a good will tour that should cover a lot of the hot spots in ltaly. Of course, Gary Johnson, the ambassador to Italy .... Spain, France, China, Russia, and Batavia, has been there for the past week and a half trying to settle things. O.K., that's it from Washington, except to say that General Mike Gilmer, Chief of Asian Affairs during the war, was stricken with a slight heart attack while giving a speech to the Ladies Aid, but he is coming along miraculously under the special care ol' Dr. Greg joseph, Washington's heart specialist. Thank you, Gene. Now for the financial news. The stock market fell today, according to the Bob Bakst averages, and shows little sign of improving. This is another increase in the downward trend which many people have predicted as a typical postwar boom and slump. Those usually stable companies which were hit especially hard were: Delsima Chemical, Damon National Steel Company, and Quackenbush and Son. Mark Wichtermann, the president's economic advisor, and a rising political figure, said that things will even out quickly if the college campuses of America settle down after the stir caused by Richard Bardy, the radical who has already been thrown out of four countries. But l'll let you take that, Gene. Well, it seems that Brady has challenged the right for many of today's pro- fessors, mainly Profs. Peter Bertozzi, now involved in graduate work at Harvard, and Leslie Meyer, president of some obscure northwestern college, to teach in America claiming that they are members of the Brazilian Nationalist Party. Mal Darling, chairman of the Teachers' Guild, and just back from one of his far-Hung travels, this time to the South Pole, has not yet decided on any clear cut action. a iecg We'cl like to take time out here to give a brief mention to our sponsors who make this program possible: Arnold Piano of New York, Washington and Braintree, makers of the world's best chapel organs and pianosg Doane Publishing Company, publishers of Sports Illustrated, Basketball Weekly, Names in Sports, lst and 2nd Year French Primer, and currently publishing john Fort's newest book, How 10 Succeed Without Even Trying. This is the first time the company has ever printed anything from such a controversial author, and it should be interesting to see what the response is. Also, by Nellson Electronics, currently expanding into a national supplier of computer parts, and ,laquith Motors, the company you can trust for a new or used car. I've just been reading this editorial, Stu, by Barry Pearson, that appeared in most of the nation's papers today. He attacks the labor unions, and particularly labor boss Bob -Rahner and his second in command, Jerry Love. Mr. Pearson claims that these two are to blame for the latest drop in the stock market because of the clock . . . er, dock strike that tied up the shipping on both coasts for several weeks. You remember those brawls that kept breaking out, Stu, particularly that one in Boston where four people were severely beaten in the thick of the lighting. Yesl You must mean Bulger, Harley, Osborn and Parker, Rahner's chief trouble-shooters. They had been chief targets of his opponents and he is now claim- ing that they had planned this incident far in advance. It is a good thing Dave Pierce stepped in to arbitrate the dispute so successfully. i'We donit have too much time left so we'd better switch over to the Human Interest department where there were a few interesting awards given out this week, The Atlantic Monthly Literature Award given to a contributing writer, goes to Bowdoin's Professor of English, Thad Keefe, for his article on How A Senior English Teacher Should Prepare His Students For College. Brian Powers, editor of the magazine, presented the scroll. The Manson Foundations Award for Good Citizenship went to Dan Harrington, you'll remember he's the reformed narcotic on whom Life Magazine recently did an article, and the cherished Davis Gup of Tennis yesterday was presented to Mark Staples. So, Gene, that about wraps it up for tonight. Tomorrow's program will include a discussion about Phil Blythe, that famous historian who has written a radically different United States history book, and the newest sensation in the jazzworld, Bob Lockwood. Good night, Gene. Good night, Stu. And now a word from Jack Desmond, the Olympic Gold Medal winner, about Wheaties, the breakfast of champions. dzddd cad!! MR. FERGUSON leaves in a new car. MR.
