The otticers they elected were not commonplace, nor was the Sophomore class-as the school was soon to find out. With Parker Riddle, president, Ioan Kissinger, vice-president, Patricia Varney, secretary, Lawrence Newhall, treasurer, Nancy Severance and William Dunbar, student council mem- bers, the class began its second year at the Academy. Many loyal sophomores participated in extra-curricular activities. Bill Dunbar, Buzz Bishop, Ioe Copp, Leo Lampron, Bob Leighton, Lyford Merrow, Lawrence Newhall, Parker Riddle, and Will Roome were awarded varsity letters in football, Buzz Bishop, Iimmy Wal- lace, Charles Hatch, and Ioe Copp were members ol the orchestra. Bill Dunbar, Warren Thompson, Leo Lampron, and Guy Corson went out for hockey. The Sophomore class sponsored a dance in November with as much enthusiasm as Henry Kaiser uses in launching a ship. The dance was a huge success and netted the class 53500. Each division in English put on a scene in chapel from one of Shakespeare's plays. One division played the Court Scene from The Merchant of Venice with Bill Dunbar as Shylock: the other put on the Touchstone Scene from As You Like It with Parker Riddle as Touchstone. Watch the Class ot 1947! lt this year has been a sample of what they can do, you may expect great accomplishments from now on-not only here at Brewster but out in the world as well! NTQFQJAWLILPL C 61,55 H HAT a mob! Are they all Freshmen? Don't they seem young? These are a few typical remarks the seniors were making when they first saw the twenty-one boys and twenty-one girls that made up the nervous but far-from-quiet, Freshmen class last September The freshmen elected Paul Whitney, president, Polly Wilson, vice-presi- dent, Rita Banfill, secretary, Paul Rico, treasurer, Marcia Severance and Gerald McDuflee, student council members. In sports, David Moore, Courtney Moore, and Robert Tibbetts received letters in football while Frank McBride, Ir., Paul Whitney, and Leslie Chamber- lain received numerals. Vivian Reed received a certificate for cheerleading. Steve Hatch, Paul Whitney, and Wesley Home were members of the or- chestra. Although the freshmen did not willingly plan any entertainment for the student body, they gave more than their share when they involuntarily acted the program the Seniors planned for them at Freshmen Initiation. Members of the council were as follows: Gerald McDuffee and Marcia Severance, freshmen, William Dunbar and Nancy Severance, sophomores, Irving Roberts and Alice Smith, juniors, Bessie Willand and David MacMartin, seniors. Students on the future councils, we hope, will have the opportunity to govem more social and business affairs of the school. It has continued to offer articles on sports, news events, everyday happenings, and prose and poetry culled from the students' daily work. The staff of '44 included three experienced writers: Iohn Ballentine, lean Parkhurst and David MacMartin. Others on the staff were Parker Riddle, William Dunbar, Charrnian Dunham, and Beatrice Alden. During the latter part of the school year, Lyford Merrow was added to the staff as associate editor. We wish to thank the Granite State News for allowing us space in which the students at Brewster may display their growing adeptness in the art of writing. 277! prczger I oIose my eyes A strgm of mus C b mgs you b cf P me I see you rn my thoughts os 1h refxl t As cIeorIy os the dgy We sold good Io Je Cur vo ces so o the words but no or r eg s A Word cz gesture tokes rre bgca to you green When doys were frlled w1'h sun ond song frd love- n stors re'Iected IH th k I I Crt us I close my eyes and pray tfr you retr, Sh Ne Be n f! This year on April Z5 the concert was given by the combined glee clubs and by the newly- organized orchestra. The orchestra provided the iirst part ot the program. The second part was given by the chorus accompanied by the orchestra. They sang very effectively selections from Carmen by Bizet, including the familiar Toreador song. The soloists were Grace Cunningham, Iocmne Kissinger, and Robert Deyak. Miss lane Morris, pianist, played with the orchestra during the vocal program. The Brewster Commencement Concert was given by the combined glee clubs and orchestra Sunday, Iune 3rd, at Carpenter School. Songs by the combined glee clubs were Soldiers of God by Ben Machan, and two selections trom Carmen. The Girls' Glee Club sang The Lost Chord by Sir Arthur Sullivan, The Donkey Serenade by Rudolf Friml, and I Love a Parade by Harold Arlen. The closing number was Fred Waring's very inspiring Hymn To A Hero which was sung in memory of the Brewster graduates who have given their lives in World War II. The glee clubs greatly appreciate the help and inspiration given to them by their leader, Mrs. Marjorie Pg Hatch, and wish her continued success. - rewafer .giualenb mo .Alaue g,n65feal in flue .fgrmeaf j0rce5 574,115 Mar Back How, left to right: Deyak, MocMcrtin, D., Nichols, A. Hatch, Griffin, Parkhurst, Kirkland, Hatch S OI'CA95tI'H, An orchestra at B.F.A. was organized this year. lts reputation has begun to spread both far and near. With fifteen members in the group, director, Mrs. Hatch, Has made a splendid orchestra that tew prep-schools can match. Our Patty was the pianist, while few and far between Were violins, so sweetly played by Melba and by lean. The woodwinds clear had players three-Buzz, Bill and Charlie blew Their clarinet and saxophones as few folks now can do. The trombone score was played by Io, the trumpets by six boys. The firsts by Herbie, Bob, and Hugh, who really made some noise. The brasses of the second part by Wesley, Paul, and lim Were blown both loud and lustily with vigor and with vim. And Stevie, adding rhythm, had the cymbals, snare drum, bass, While at the vibrant, sparkling bells, tones were produced by Grace. The music used was varied thus from classical to swing And tho they played their marches well, the waltzes were the thing. They played at Men's Club, Rotary, Masonic meetings, too, At school and canteen dances, which they really liked to do. The Christmas Concert was the first, and for the Senior Play, Between the acts, they did their part, made intermission gay. The Woman's Club at Farmington, engaged a-very few To entertain their membership with solos-trios too. Another club was entertained in Alton, near the bay. An outdoor fete, on campus grounds, took place the last of May. The Cate Fund Concert filled the hall with folks from far and near For orchestra and glee clubs joined in Carmen's atmosphere. The final concert of the year was at Commencement time. Our orchestra's activities are written in this rhyme. And now, our thanks to Mrs. Hatch, who worked hard night and day To give the school an orchestra, the pride of B.F.A. 5 s 5 ,. i 'v Q, , Back ROW, left fo right: McBride, Merrow Pike B'shop Moore, C., Moore. The opening game was played at St. Iohn's in Concord, on September 23. The boys showed plenty of fighting spirit but, due to the lack of experience, went under for a 19-6 defeat. Brewster met Spaulding on the following week but the heavier Spaulding team proved to have the power and the final tally read 39-0 in favor of Spaulding. On October 20 Brewster engaged Proctor Academy at Proctor. The first quarter ended with both teams in a deadlock. On the second play of the second quarter, Hutchins took a reverse around right end for a touch-down. The half ended with Brewster leading 5-0. In the first of the second half Hutchins went over again after receiving a short pass from Newhall, to give Brewster a 12-0 lead. In the first of the fourth quarter, Proctor intercepted a pass and carried the ball over the line for a touchdown. On the last down, Proctor com- pleted a 17-yard pass and tied the score. The extra point was no good and the game ended 12-12. Brewster played its first home game against the- St. Iohn eleven. The half -ended with the fi htin lrish leading l2-0 In the third quarter Newhall completed a Q 9 - , pass to Hutchins who followed good interference for the only touchdown scored for Brewster. Bill Thomas kicked the extra point and the quarter ended 12-7. In the final quarter, St. lohn scored twice. Although Brewster threatened from the 2-yard line, time ran out and the final score read, St. Iohn 25, Brewster 7, On November 3, the Brewster team met Franklin at Franklin, The red and black jerseymen fought hard but they were no match for the heavy Franklin line. The final score ended in a 38-O defeat for Brewster. The Brewster eleven ended its grid season with Holderness on November 10th. For H. Hodgdon, D. MacMartin, A. Nichols, L. McHugh, C. Rumrill, and W. Buswell, this was their last high school game. lt was played on Brewster Alumni Field in the rain and mud. The teams were evenly matched and at the end of the third quarter, the score remained U-0. With three minutes remaining to play, Holderness went over from the 2-yard line to score the winning touch- down. Baielaff HEWSTER opened its '45 baseball season, April 28. at Memorial Field and found that four of the varsity were still with them, along with many new prospects. In their first game at Memorial Field, Brewster lost to the visiting team, Holderness, in a see-saw battle all the way. The final score was Holderness 7, Brewster 4. However Brewster was not to be denied as the team pounded out a 13-7 score over Proctor Academy. Hodgdon paced the attack with three hits and the boys played all-around ball. May 9th, Brewster invaded Conway and lost a one-sided contest by a 22-3 score, through errors and weak hitting. On the 21st Brewster traveled to Concord to play St. Iohns and lost an up-hill battle, 13-8. St, Iohns scored five unearned runs in the first but Brewster came right back in the second to score 3 runs. After the second, both teams settled down to baseball playing but it was too late for Brewster to make up those needed scores. In the retum game at Andover, the Brewster team ran rough-shod over Proctor, 20-8. Bud Bean and Donald Tibbetts were the outstanding hitters in this game with Bean' collecting 6 hits for 6 times at bat and Tibbetts 4 hits in 6 times up. Tibbetts hit a double, triple and two singles which put his average up to .454. May 25th, Brewster visited Holderness resolved to make up for the 7-4 loss in their first game. Brewster piled up a 6-0 score but Holdemess was not to be denied and so tied the score. Brewster won this game in the ninth inning when Dunbar reached first on a bunt, stole second, and came all the way home through a single by Buswell. Holderness tried to tie the score up again in their half of the ninth but the attempt was frustrated through a double play started by Dunbar. The following day, Ken- nett, so far Brewster's Nemesis, came to Wolfeboro and laced them 14-l. The score was l-l until the sixth inning when the Brewster team broke wide open and the score began to pile up for Kennett. There was an elimination toumament which was a good exhibit of skilled playing. Although it was handicapped by frequent showers cmd a snow storm, it was played speedily and with a show of good sports- manship. Bob Deyak, the winner ol the boys' singles last year, again placed very well. Bessie Willand, Marnie Brookes, Hope Whittum, Didi Wall, Eileen Morse and Carra Richardson are a few of this year's players. 14' wk My vw M X1 SE , ik gn 3' W it ag wr V G P -sw Qi A W ' , s .Q y .SZQQCA FOB MANY years the graduatmg class has gath ered to plant the 1vy beslde the walls of Brewster Durmg these years the 1vy has grown untll 1t covers nearly half of our mam blllldlflg Wlth the 1vy we have grown too and many graduates of Brewster have gone forth lnto the world wrth a background of true c1t1zensh1p lt 1S httmg that we thmk of our graduates many of whom are 1n the servlces of our country ftghtlng for you and me Our boys and glrls are scattered all over the world from the 1cy Arctlc reglons to the trop1c waters of the South Seas Today another class goes out of Brewster w1ll go on to college to study and learn and some who knows may reach hlgh pos1t1ons m these our Un1ted States?
