This is a question with many answers because Brevard means many things to many people. However, the 1984- 85 Pertelote is taking a look at Bre vard College through the Brevard College student ' s eyes. On the sur- face, we see Brevard as a place of tradition, beauty, acidemia, and closeness. Brevard College is the ex- periences that will become precious memories. B revard College is the door we open to find ourselves and others. Brevard College is the love between friends and between self and God. Brevard College is every- thing and anything we want it to be — an infinite myriad of experiences and emotions that make the Brevard student who he is. hl, M eXvZc ,T, ' her ? ' . ' V™ °™ ' d Allege The Ji g n„y of, he ichoolsnd ,he indtvlduJ in.ii .uieml Brevard c ollege relies on the existence of the church The town of Brevard has a growing interest in Brevard College. The college and the town have become reliant on one another to a degree. Therefore, the students of Brevard College can appreciate the benefits of a small town and the beauty of Western North Carolina. Opening 3 Traditional Brevard College is an institution of traditions. Some of the customs that have been visible to the Class of ' 85 are the lighting of the big Christmas tree in December, braving the cold plunge at Sliding Rock , walking to class in the rain almost every day. and participating in the annual Derby Day. Another cus- tom that will always be at Brevard as long as there is a creek running through the campus is the traditional creek- ing on known birthdays. However, one final tradition for each Brevard College student is to march through the old arch just beside Taylor dorm on gradu- ation day. When students pass under that arch one final time, they have marched out with a hope and dream fulfilled. • ' « 1-N Brevard College traditions are cre- ated tor enjoyment These tradi- tions allow everyone to become in- volved in campus life and enjoy the atmosphere of Brevard College. Fun is sought after by all college students, and it is evident that these students have achieved their goals through the traditions at Bre- vard College. f 4 Opening mmwmwKmmsmmmt Birthdays and Christmas are anticipated by people worldwide. However. Bre- vard College has developed unique traditions to honor these common holi- days Creeking and the Christmas celebration allow Brevard College students to share these special occasions with one another. Opening 5 Close There is a special unity among Bre- vard College students that grows in- tensely throughout the year. Many young men and women come to Bre- vard as strangers and grow to become the best of friends. These friendships will become a major part of the indivi- dual ' s college life. As there is a feeling for all seasons, each season brings about a special feeling between friends. Fall brings everyone at Brevard College together, winter enhances the day to day association between them, and spring brings the uneasy feeling that everyone must gc their separate ways. But even after life at Brevard College, the friendships made here will carry on and become major roles in each of our lives. Each student at Brevard College experiences a special aspect of college life - togetherness Whether in groups or a one on one relationship, closeness is not only essential, hul the best ttmes in life come when a special intimacy is present. 6 Opening k Opening 7 The academic process at Brevard College is by and large the most important aspect of the college atmosphere From the traditional classes to the new computer courses, there are academic challenges for each individual $ ' Opening ■HMHHM  .- ? ?:.o. ■■■. .  Academic Academic opportunities at Brevard are varied and abundant. Because of its small size, Brevard can give each stu- dent the individual attention he or she deserves. Despite its small size. Brevard offers a wide variety of courses with over 300 listed in the catalog. Brevard also encourages academic excellence through scholarships and special awards. Brevard College is proud of its students, and the students work hard to fulfill both the college ' s and their own expectations. | In order to maintain these aca- demic challenges. Brevard College must continually expand its cur- riculum. The year of 1 984 - 85 brought with it a new computer system This system is a great aca- demic advance for Brevard College, and the interest and intrigue of the students supplement this academic progress. Opening 9 from the panoramic to the miniature, by day and by night. Brevard is a cornucopia of beautiful images. 10 Opening Picturesque Brevard College has to be one of the most picturesque places in the world. Situated in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Brevard College lies in a scenic valley near the entrance to the Pisgah National Forest. Along with be- ing nestled among all these lovely mountains. Brevard College is located in the Land of the Waterfalls. By looking out a window, students can see so much beauty it ' s hard to take it all in. B. C. students visit the Pisgah Forest and Blue Ridge Parkway frequently. Not only are the mountains and environ- ment very beautiful, but also varied ar- chitecture and landscaping on campus are a pleasure to behold. These pictures reflect the beauty of Brevard College both on and off campus While Jones dorm exhibits the beauty of the campus at night, a colorful mountain scene enhances the daylight beauty of Brevard Opening 1 1 il MWlTlirilMIHIIIiHIHIlllll iinwTimn mtm Zhe Spirit Let The Games Begin Derby Day at Brevard College is a unique exper- ience in itself. From the moment the derby is tossed, the day is filled with fun and excitement. Everyone en|oys the picnic lunch while watching the different events. Each dotm has a team in the competitions. The events include volleyball, egg- tossing, and the three-legged race. The most popu- lar crowd -pleasers are the musical buckets, izzy- dizzy, and the tug-of-war. The competition brings the students closer together, because it gives every- one the chance to meet new friends and have a great time. If there ' s one day that will be remem- bered throughout the whole school year, it has to be Derby Day. Derby Day events range from ' he egg-throw to musical buckets All events tend to leave [he students in a somewhat awkwatd predicament 14 Derby Day Derby Day IS Welcome To Brevard The first week at college has to be the most frus- trating and exciting time in a student ' s life. It ' s like walking into a totally different world filled with new friends and good times. It all starts with moving all of our favorite stuffed animals and favorite clothes to a whole new room . . . moving into a college dorm. However, friends are made quickly in our new homes. Movies, dances, and popcorn parties bring newly found friends closer together. But there ' s also a more serious side to college life at Brevard. To begin put- ting everyone in the right frame of mind, we have Fall Convocation. This ceremony prepares us to set our goals for our upcoming college experience. Like ever- ything else, college life has its ups and downs, but one thing ' s for sure: It ' s a once in a lifetime experience and it has to begin somewhere. The first few days of college go hand-in-hand with dances, bands, and the confusion of get- ting settled in. No matter how confusing col- lege gets, the possibilities seem endless. I ' 6 Orientation All new students need direction when entering college. Whether it be directions to the dorms from supporting sophomores or encouraging advice from President Martin- son, the support or freshman becomes an important step- ping stone in their college careers. Orientation 1 7 Goblins, Ghosts, And Ghouls . . . Along with the Jack o ' lantern which smiled so wickedly came suspense on Halloween night. The sullen and fog- thickened night was perfect for the grotesque figures who stalked the campus at Brevard College. Who in their right mind would come out on such a night? is the ques- tion one might ask. And the answer is Brevard College Students. Despite the race of the horrible creatures to various Halloween parties, the students, dressed in every costume one could imagine, were eager to experience the unexpected of Halloween night. As in the previous year the females traveled in groups for safety, but that still did not protect them from the Halloween ghost who threat- ened their lives. Once the horror-stricken students reached the Student Union where the masquerade party was held, they began to dance their fears away. The party filled with strange people was a blast as everyone indulged in the Monster Mash. 18 Htlloween isRBmnnsniM I I Halloween is a time when all students can participate. This year Brevard College stu- dents were caught in various costumes. It is obvious that all types of people enjoyed the thrill of the Halloween season. Halloween 19 A Warm Welcome From Home During the first weekend of November, parents are given the opportunity to explore the campus of Brevard. Special entertainment by the students adds to the enjoy- ment of the parents ' visits. This year the fall production, Oklaho- ma, was a tremendous success. A special breakfast followed by a worship service for parents also helped set the mood for an enjoy- able weekend. Each year the stu- dents anticipate this traditional welcome from home. 10 Parenli Weekend IIM Parent ' s Weekend J I Broadway Comes To Brevard This year the Brevard College Division of Fine Arts presented the production of Oklahoma. Auditions were held for the production by Sam Cope and Alex Helsabeck. Through their guidance, the cast was chosen and worked hour after hour to perfect the show. Through long, tiring rehearsals the cast, crew and orchestra members put together a successful show to the delight of the Brevard Community. 12 Fall Drama ■long hours and hard work obviously paid off with the success of Okhho- The excitement and enthusiasm of the cast was carried over to the audience. s enthusiasm helped create the setting for Oklahoma and make the play a vard College theatrical hit. All the hustle and bustle, the joy, the magic, and the happy voices. All these things add to the spirit of Christmas and create the wonderful feeling that it brings. Brevard contains all this and much more. The first day of December the town seems to change and the college comes to life. We begin by choosing secret Santas within the dorms and having hall parties. There is always a special Christmas dinner in the cafeteria and also a Christmas Parade in town. :: X m Studenti u BC enjoy the annyal Christmas Parade, the lighting of the Christmas tree, and the annual College Christmas Program which former Chaplain Dr Fdward Roy (at right) initiated 31 Chnsimjf - m The Christmas spirit is felt by everyone on campus. This program provides students with extra money and gives them the opportunity to get better acquainted with the faculty of Brevard College. It is an easy way of earning up to S 7 00.00 per year because the students only work a few hours a day. Most work grants are provided to students with a financial need, but others receive it because of special skills. These work study grants are provided by both Federal College Work-Study Programs and Brevard College. 34 Work Study Students work in various places such as in admissions, library, cafeteria or for individual teachers Work Study 35 Style In ' 85 Each year, Brevard College fash- ions take on a new dimension. This year was no exception. 1985 has brought forth many unusual fash- ion trends. Fashion seekers may find shopping very disappoinring in the Brevard area; therefore, BC students may have to travel far and wide to keep up with the latest things. Somehow, they always manage to stay in touch with the fashion world. Each day one can observe the various styles on the BC campus. However, if you rely on your faithful blue jeans, you will be in fashion at BC. 1 n 1 1 Darryl Williams. Off- campus activities are important to those students who need a change of scenery. The most popular of these activities are those in Asheville or Hendersonviile where students either shop in the malls or eat in restaurants. The Pisgah National Forest also pro- vides a change where students can get back to nature. All of these activities provide students with an escape from campus and academic pressures. Students have access to the forest and neighboring cities for off-cam- pus fun and relaxation. Seven men represented the number one ranked road runners in the national meet on November 10th in Twin Falls. Idaho. Four of those seven were chosen as All-Americans. They are Charles Purser. Patrick O Grady. Rod Curry and Glenn Roach. The Cross-Country team set a record of winning the Nationals 3 years in a row. Coach Doug Rog- ers was fortunate to have a good sophomore team with an abundance of experienced play- ers such as Richie White. Theodus Baker, and Anthony Hailey conttibuting much to the team ' s success. An injury to sophomore Tracy Stringer affected the team ' s performance at one point during the season, but the Sparta Connection ' ' - consisting of the three former high school teammates Andre James. Hollis Hill, and Ricky Chatman - was able to pick up the slack. Along with demonstrating hard work and good sports- manship, the team played good, solid basket- ball throughout the season. )KV2.Ji ■ZH 7 to ! They beat Anderson (whom they had not beaten in three years) and Spartanburg Methodist (whom they had not beaten in two years) two out of thtee games each. Four of the five starters averaged in double figures, and this factor, along with an aggressive devense, led the team to the WCJCC Tournament Champion- ship and to a berth in the Region X Tournament at which they lost to Chowan College by one point. As a result of their outstanding play in the conference tournament and during the season. the following team membets received individ- ual honors: Sheila Gibson, Conference Tourna- ment MVP; Pam Lyons and Angie Vickers, All- Conference. All-Americon sophomore sprinter Kelvin McRae has shown evidence of being one of the best junior college sprintets in the nation. Also, high-jumper Jeff Jenrette, a 6 ' 1 sopho- more, has improved his technique, enabling him to be one of the bettet jumpers in the nation. Homecoming 63 - who ' s who among 1 came to Brevard College apprehensive and more scared than I ' ll ever admit to. Then somehow I made friends and became a real ' college student. Yet seventy percent of my education did not come from books. I ' ve learned a lot about myself. College really makes you take a stand on what you believe and don ' t believe in. I ' ve also learned about other people. Even though some don ' t show it, they really do have a human side. I gained first-hand experience with some peculiar BC traditions — creeking for instance. Birthdays make you a year older and much wetter. I became involved with the BC newspaper, and I ' m glad I did. Memories of working with the Clarion will always stay with me, and I learned one important fact — the amount of copy needed is inversely proportionate to the amount of time before a deadline. All in all, I think coming to BC was one of my best decisions. But as I came here a little scared, I leave the same way. It ' s a big world out there. — Jill Avett I believe that Brevard College has given me the base for success in life. Brevard has helped me reach goals that two years ago I thought were impossible. — Pat Boyd Brevard College is a very special place for me. It has given me a new lease on life Since entering Brevard, I have met some of the nicest people Whether it is faculty members, administration people, or the students, everyone is willing to help. Brevard College has a family atmosphere. Also, where could one get to know personally the Dean, Dean of Student Affairs, and President of the College? They all actually eat with the students in the cafeteria a great deal of the time. Brevard also will cater itself to the needs of the individual. One does not feel like a number, but a very special part of the College community. That is what I like most about Brevard College, the fact that everybody is special no matter who they are or what their needs are. — Don Collier 64 Who ' s Who american junior colleges m I love being a student at Brevard. The opportunities are fantastic. I have learned many important lessons, not only in the classroom, but through my interactions with students and faculty. 1 would like to thank Brevard College for allowing me to form friendships with very special people. They will always hold a special place in my heart, along with BC — my second home. ' — Caryn Clause To My Family I am thankful that I came to Brevard. I have learned a lot here, academically and socially. Most of all, I have learned about myself. Brevard has helped me to break the bonds at home and has helped me to start a life of my own. When people go away to school, they are by themselves in the sense that they are responsible for their actions. They can be influenced by friends, faculty, or even God. Ultimately, the decision is up to them, and them alone. It is my life now, and I am responsible. My family has taught me this and has guided me in the right direction. Now it is up to Lew and Lew alone to follow this path. I am thankful that I came to Brevard, because it has given me the chance to start my own life. Most of all, I am thankful for my family who have provided me with a sense of direction and purpose. Love, Lew. — Lew Dyer Being at Brevard College these past two years has been both challenging and rewarding for me. 1 can attribute many great memories to BC. I have met so many great friends and teachers, and I will leave Brevard knowing that I am prepared for even greater challenges. — John Furnell Who ' s Who 65 Most people do not realize that Brevard College was a strange place to me as a freshman. The wall around the campus isolates the college environment from local people. The world within the wall is a different world from that of the town outside. This difference sometimes plays the role as a barrier between day students and others. However, being a day student teaches one to stand up for what she believes in and fight for well-deserved privileges. As in the difference between the campus and the town, I am a different person once I leave campus. Being a day student gives me both the advantages and the disadvantages of two worlds. I have learned that independence comes from within one ' s self — not by going away from home. I feel as though Brevard College has given me a great deal of guidance, and I am now ready to advance to a four-year school. However, I have grown to love this campus, and I now have a new idea of what it means to come home. ' — Tina Holland Brevard is a unique school. It has offered me so much in so many ways. Academically, I have been challenged to meet requirements and encouraged to go beyond what was expected of me. Socially, I have met people that will forever affect my life Attending Brevard has been one of the most beneficial decisions of my life. — Richard Ledbetter I feel that Brevard College has expressly touched and improved me in many ways. My intellectual development has been improved upon by the wonderful and enthusiastic teachers here at Brevard College. They have stimulated my interest in learning and have even made it fun to learn. The friends I have made here at Brevard have greatly enhanced my experience. I will never forget all of the friends that I have made here. I will especially never forget all of my friends on the third floor of Taylor. I believe my second year at Brevard has been even more enjoyable than my first year. In addition to all of these things previously mentioned, I have found someone special. This added pleasure completely fulfills the realm of enjoyment that anyone could want out of a college, and 1 have found it here at Brevard. — Freddy McClure 66 Who ' s Who l 1 0fk | ■mHr 1 1 • . m ™ mm- j WM f fe Jamie Moten, from Raleigh, NC, is very active on campus. Besides being an honor student, he is a member of several campus organizations, including Circle K, the Spanish Club, Collegiate Singers, and Phi Theta Kappa. Jamie has been very visible during his two years at the college, and he has made noteworthy contributions to the Brevard College Community. When I came to Brevard, at first I thought that I would have a hard time adjusting because I was coming from a different country. The family-type student body and faculty were very friendly to me and helped me adjust quickly to my new environment. I have now spent a year and a half at Brevard, and I have made a lot of friends and a lot of memories; but most of all I grow to love this friendly college. I wish that by some strange miracle Brevard would suddenly become a four- year college and I would not have to leave in May. Brevard has given me an identity and a goal in life. I have been taught that I should set big goals for myself and that I can achieve them. My confidence has been strengthened through the recognition that I have received success even just for trying. In May I will leave Brevard a better person. Thank you, Brevard, for allowing me to experience your beauty. ' ' — Patrick O ' Grady I don ' t think there is any place on earth more beautiful than Brevard. People spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to be able to come to the mountains for a few weeks a year. By attending school here, I ' ve been able to experience the beauty of every season in the mountains. And I think that because of Brevard ' s size, I ' ve been able to do things here that I would not have been able to do at a large, four-year college. I feel very lucky to have been able to spend the past two years at Brevard College. — Susan Rogers Who ' s Who 67 Brevard College is the ideal place for the learning experience to take place. The college offers courses that are academically challenging and helpful to each student ' s needs. The people that make up the college are caring and want to provide each student with the best education. The atmosphere that surrounds the college is friendly, is conducive for learning, and makes each student feel at home. Through its various academic, social, and cultural programs, Brevard College truly exemplifies its motto, Excellence in Education! — Andrea Rose My feelings about Brevard can be summed up in three words: gratitude, opportunity, and growth. I am grateful for having come to Brevard to experience its beauty, its people and the knowledge obtained during my two years of education here. Brevard is unique in the sense that it gives one the opportunity to reach his or her full potential and at the same time not lose track of the people involved in helping to reach that potential. The final word is growth. The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live. Brevard has helped my growth as a person and I shall ever be indebted to this institution because of this. — Eddie Tadlock I like Brevard College because of the caring faculty, interesting students, and beautiful campus. The faculty is always there if you need a tutor or a friend. The students are all individuals willing to make life interesting The campus is in a great location. Where else, besides Brevard, could I find all that I need? — Judy Tesh 68 Who ' s Who To my instructors, who have all had time for me; to the students, who accepted me; to the helpful administration staff, I say an appreciative Thank You! So many good things have happened to me at Brevard College not the least of which is the outstanding education I have received. Be assured that I will talk of Brevard College with love for years to come. — Grade Welch I am a Musical Theater and Communications major. I believe strongly in the Bible verse I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). My philosphy is that man cannot gain world peace until he gains peace within himself through Jesus Christ, our Lord. I enjoy and admire the simple things in life; a smile, laughter, prayer, rain, and sunshine. These are the things that we take for granted. My hobbies are stage performances, singing, and spreading love and happiness. I enjoy performing because it gives me a chance to express myself and to show to others the inner peace and love that I have within myself. I like to spread love and happiness because I believe a hug, a smile, or just a kind word could always make a difference in someone ' s life. — Darryl Williams My experiences at Brevard College will always have a special place in my heart. BC means many things to me. It is the door I opened in order to find myself. The challenging faculty and close friends have allowed me to improve myself personally as well as academically. It ' s the love that I have found between self and God and self and friends. The friends I have made here at Brevard are extremely important and will always have a special place in my life. After the Visiting Committee re- views the data which has been gath- ered, the school hopes to be reaccredit- ed. after which there will be a follow-up report in five years to evaluate the pro- gress made in meeting recommenda- tions. Above left: Mr. Jackson serves as the Director of the Self-Study and Head of the Steering Commit tee. Above: Students became involved in the study through their participation in a thorough survey. Left: Yes. faculty do have a sense of hu- mor, as Mr. Woodruff demonstrates during his committee meeting. 155 ■H m I This index of names and ad- dresses is intended for the private use of Brevard Col- lege students, faculty, and staff and may not be used for any other purpose (i.e. survey, solicitation, etc.) without the permission of Brevard College. I am excited to know that we have captured another year of events. However, it is also sad to know that I am ending my final year at Brevard College. Brevard College has given me so much. I could never repay it for the lessons it has taught me. As Co-Editor of the Pertelote, I have learned lessons of patience, responsibility, and dedication. Without these I would have never made it through the year. I must also give credit to some people who kept me going when the going got pretty tough. I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Jackson. Coach Mary Ann Sunbury, Belton Hammond. Tina Hol- land. My trustworthy photographers. Larry and Chris, and Mendy. my all-arou nd helper, and my roomates who tolerated me during deadlines. All of these people made it possible for me to do my best on this book. But above all. I must thank God. I ' ll always remember the experience of being an Editor. It made my final year at Brevard College a much more enjoyable one. I hope that students will look back on this book years from now and see a part of one of the most exciting experiences of their lives. Robin Williams %hL£C?Me,l The production of the 1985 Pertelote marks both a be- ginning and an end. Although it is sometimes sad to leave a place to which one has grown accustomed, new challenges meet each and every one of us. The Pertelote staff has tried to produce a book that can be representative of each of our BC experiences. It is my wish that everyone can find some- thing in these pages that he will treasure throughout life. I would like to thank Robin Williams. Randy Jackson, and Joyce Jackson for their endless efforts in making the 1985 Pertelote something that Brevard College can be proud of. Without the help of each person on the staff, the produc- tion of this book would not have been possible. I can only hope that the efforts put forth in its production have made the 1985 Pertelote a book that all students can enjoy. Many Japanese students in particu- lar come here as part of a special program, while other individual for- eign students are also attracted to Brevard for its academic or athletic opportunities. However, ethnic di- versity is not the only type of variety Brevard College has. Many people who have families of their own have found time to begin or to return to college and have chosen Brevard for its convenience as well as its offer- ings. lop: Fernando Cordovez. from Venezuela: Above left. But at Brevard College there are many more special times in between these two particular ones. Each student will ha ve his own memories connect- ed with events such as Derby Day. Parents ' Weekend, and the B.C. Christmas, and with more personal moments — perhaps none more ex- citing than making those first col- lege friends who will soon be fellow alumni. I $6 Closing Spring semester excitement began with a series of snowfalls during the first two weeks of classes and with Casino Night kicking off a new series of Student Union activities. Closing 187 I SS Closing Students accept the academic challenge at Bre- vard when they enroll and buy their hooks; they strive to meet this challenge by attending classes and by studying, both alone and with friends. F Challenging Brevard offers many challenges to its students. The obvious ones are academics and athletics. Each year the college adds new programs of study, such as the computer science program, to increase the challenge of academics. Athletes are highly challenged by the quality of compe- tition found in the Western Caroli- nas Junior College Conference. However, there are also the chal- lenges of making friends and of learning to adapt to a college soci- ety. Students who meet these chal- lenges and triumph over them will be winners at the end of their Brevard College careers. In these pictures we see Brevard stu- dents meeting personal and shared challenges for pleasure and for self- improvement. This is true because Brevard College is such a rewarding experience for so many people. There are the rewards of an outstanding education, of fine athle- tic competition, and of new friend- ships that will last a lifetime. Stu- dents who leave Brevard take with them many fond memories, especial- ly of the people who become family for an important, if brief, part of their lives. Top : One reward which all students anticipate is their own diploma. Above left: Graduates of Brevard earn the additional reward of being able to embark successfully on the rest of their education at well-known four-year schools.
