lichelle Smart Named Queen Homecoming at Brevard. October tenth. was filled with electric excitement. It was a time for celebrating and reuniting old friends The day began with the Tornado soccer team ' s defeat of Spartanburg-Methodist College by a score of 3-0 During the game ' s halftime. the Homecoming Court was introduced. The representatives were: Sophomores. Tawny Brown. Mimi Burton. Kim Burrell. Lori Knight. Mary Lineberger. Mary Gay Michaels. Sandy Nelson, and Michelle Smart; Freshmen. Billie Beard. Cecil Collier. Yancy Grayson. Meg Kwasnik. Lisa Miller. Andrea Nalley. Linda Stewart, and Cherie Tinsley Everyone was anxious to find out who would be named Homecoming Queen at the dance. The live band Stratus was the featured entertainment. The basic rock and roll and the 60s extravaganza they performed earned many compliments from the students. At 10:00 p.m.. the Homecoming Queen and Princess were announced The new princess. Yancy Grayson was escorted by Peter Tresnan. Green And E. Jones Win Derby Day Titles On Derby Day, August 29, 1981 , brightly colored T-shirt clad participants fought to defend the honor of their respective dorms. Sponsored by the Social Board, Derby Day featured such exciting events as a watermelon eating contest, Izzy Dizzy Relay, Musical Water Buckets, an egg toss and volleyball. The men ' s competition resulted in Green Dorm placing first, with West Beam, Ross Hall, and Taylor following. East Jones captured first place for the women with second place going to West Jones and third to East Beam. A local band, Clear Creek, provided entertainment with a flair of country, blue grass, and rock and roll. An outdoor picnic by the pool resulted in many new friendships.
