He is a vital part of some- thing he will never forget. Hopefully, he will want to treasure all that happens while he is encountering this new and glorious ex- perience. THE YEAR 34 V Mil The academic year 1969-1970 offi- cially began with the Fall Convoca- tion. Faculty and administration, in cap and gown , and President Davis, welcomed the returning sophomores back to Brevard and the freshmen to their new home. Registration was part two of the opening of school. Freshmen and sophomores alike withstood the long lines and long hours to sign up for classes. Robert Aldine Davis, in his first year as President of Brevard College, has virtually enchanted the campus with his sparkling per- sonality. In the cafeteria, in the hallways, or on the campus lawn, President Davis never hesitated to meet students with a friendly handshake and inquiry into their well-being as a student at Brevard. His concern for each individual was always apparent in the emo- tional strength of his friendly countenance. Also, he has invariably enchanced the trust and friendship of the faculty members and students alike with his determined and vigor- ous attitude toward the progress of Brevard College. His congenial disposition combined with his aggressive leadership qualities have undoubtedly been the key to his success as an educational administrator. President Davis can boast extensive ac- complishments as a scholar in preparation for his administrative career. He graduated from South Georgia Junior College, and received his Bachelor of Business Administration de- gree from the University of Georgia in 1949. In 1952 he earned the Bachelor of Divinity degree from Emory University and in 1959 received the master ' s degree in Sacred The- ology from Yale University. After graduating from Emory he became Director of the Wesley Foundation at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. Following his graduate study at Yale, he was Director of the Wesley Foundation at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. In 1962 he left Georgia for Nashville, Tennessee where he was the Associate Director of the Division of Higher Education of the United Methodist Church. Finally in 1969, he turned his sights to Brevard, North Carolina and assumed the task of President of Brevard College. Several significant honors have already come to Mr. Davis. In 1957, in the course of his Director ' s job at the Wesley Foundation in Blacksburg, Virginia he was chosen as Out- standing Young Man of the Year by the Jay- cees. Also, his Master ' s degree from Yale University was accomplished as a Danforth Scholar. Of course, it is said that behind every suc- cessful man stands a woman slightly in the shadow. President Davis ' inspiration has been the former Phyllis Clough of Douglas. Georgia. Mrs. Davis is a magna cum laude graduate of Wesleyan College. The President and his wife have three smaller inspirations in Robert Aldine, III, Phyllis Blaine, and Palmer Clough. 37 ■H ■( .■: — ■•JJ ' I- 39 40 Brevard College received a much needed facility this year with the completion of the McLarty- Goodson Classroom Building. Con- structed at an estimated cost of $500,000, the new building en- compasses twice the space of the old classroom building, in use since 1914, and includes individual office space for faculty members. Construction on the new building started in the fall of 1968 and was part of an expansion program begun by the late Dr. Emmett K. McLarty, president of the college from 1957-1968. The building was named for him and for W. Kenneth Goodson, trustee and resident bishop of the Birmingham area of the United Methodist Church. It in- cludes many new educational fea- tures that were not provided in the old building. Lecture classrooms contain rear screen projection mechanisms installed behind the black boards, thus making possible the showing of films with a mini- mum of manipulation. The building houses a modern, fully equipped language laboratory. Class attend- ance is made more comfortable because of the inclusion of a cen- tral air-conditioning system. McLARTY-GOODSON BUILDING Cultural Programs were an innova- tion at Brevard College this year. They replaced the weekly chapels and lyceums previously held. Of the 34 programs presented, attendance at 22 was required. A variety of sub- jects and musical groups were in- volved. Some of the programs were musi- cal presentations such as the Smith- sonian Institute, September, and The Paul Winter Consort, which ap- peared January 31. A one-man com- edy-musical show by Peter Sayers, an England-born performer, was prob- ably the best received of all the pro- grams. The Appalachian Mountain Festival featuring Hedy West, pro- vided a concert of country and folk songs, some of which were historical, some full of sorrow, and some humor- ous. Also, a group of four black art- ists, Concert 70 appearing October 27, 1969, covered the music field from folk songs to broadway hits. Some interesting speakers who appeared in the programs were Dr. Mark Depp, a very dynamic minister and college trustee from Winston- Salem; Dr. Eugene Calendar, a negro housing commissioner in New York; and Dr. Russell Montfort, the leader of the Religious Emphasis Week. SOCCER Eighty-eight minutes of blood , sweat and tears — soccer ' 69. This is the only way to describe this soc- cer season which began in rain and ended in a journey to the nationals in Miami, Florida. Led by tri-cap- tains Ralph Lundy, Mike Michner, Cedric Guthrie, and a rookie coach, Larry Burch, the Tornadoes fought long and hard to earn the title of regional champs, and place sixth in the nationals. 43 -« :: v li  • 88 MINUTES OF BLOOD, SWERTand TEARS BC SOCCER tf I U li TOM The 1969 Homecoming Court anxiously awaits halt-time activities when the Queen will be announced. Bonnie Brewbaker, the 1968 Queen, crowned her successor Jeanette Land, who was at- tended by two sophomores and two fresh- men. Soccer and cross country victories helped to heighten the spirit of the week- end and the formal dance Saturday night softly escorted a beautiful Homecoming away. 53 CHEERLEADERS Dedication and perseverance are two good words to describe the ' 69- 70 cheerleading squad. Sponsored by Mrs. Donna Burch. the six sopho- mores and three freshmen followed the soccer team to national competi- tion in Miami, Florida and accompa- nied the basketball team to regional playoffs in Ferrum, Virginia. The hours of practice and the leadership of Car- olyn Odom enabled these girls to be- come a team who worked for the teams and the student body. Dr. Russell Montfort of the Burkhead United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem led the services. In his daily talks, he brought the students face to face with new ideas and new challenges as young Christian adults. He also spoke informally in the dormitories and held personal consultations. Presidents of the various denominational groups form the Christian Council. Advised by Chaplain Roy, the organization planned and executed an active pro- gram. In the spirit of the respective seasons, they effectively decorated the cafe- teria for the Thanksgiving Dinner and sponsored the traditional Christmas Tree Lighting. 57 EiSZfe STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION The ' 69-70 Student Government Association saw many new changes take place this year. Besides working under a new constitution, it consisted of more students than ever before. The SGA was divided into three branches — executive branch, legis- lative branch, and social branch. Un- der the leadership of president Ken Eaton, vice-president Keith Holland, and Secretary-treasurer D. J. Padgett, the SGA found it possible to make suggestions, pass bills, and improve campus life. More student represen- tation allowed the SGA to produce a very successful year. Mil SOCIAL BOARD Acting as a branch of the Student Government Association, the Social Board functioned under its own constitution and worked well to provide the campus with a variety of social events. Spon- soring dances and mov- ies, the Board also helped some organiza- tions by lending them money and asking for in- formation on various types of entertainment. Members of the Social Board are : Maureen Scott, Chairman; Jean- ette Land, Kit Black, Rick Stough, Ralph Lundy and John Collins. URLITZER ti BUSINESS CLUB Under the leadership of Katie Marrow and advisor Mrs. Grace Munro, the Business Club saw a very productive year. Besides making a donation to the disaster area in Biloxi, Missis- sippi, the club sponsored persons from outside the college to help fulfill the club ' s purpose, that being to bridge the gap between the classroom and the business world. 6? The Delta Pi chapter this year was one of the largest ever, having twenty- three members. During the fall the group sold doughnuts as a money making project, and during the spring they sold school stationery. The service project this year was again Crossnore School. Various members made several trips there tak- ing used clothing, stamps, and coupons. Also a scholarship was donated for a worthy stu- dent. A coke party was given in February for perspective members who had made eith- er the honor roll or Dean ' s List first semester. Tapping and formal induction of new mem- bers was held in April. 63 i Mj BIG SISTERS. The drama, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Rhuemma Miller, featured a cast of four charac- ters in the adaptation of Mas- ters ' work by Charles Aidman. Via musical interludes, the audience was introduced in a cemetery to the ghosts of those who were inhabitants of Spoon River and whose se- crets have gone with them to the grave. Penny Taylor, Val Barri, Alan Lathan, and George Weaver portrayed the sixty- odd characterizations and vi- gnettes in this constantly in- teresting entertainment, offer- ing a variety of roles and im- personizations, from young lovers, preachers and teach- ers, to the funny chronicle of the poor mixed-up Jew who ends up in the wrong ceme- tery. Both the sordid and the humorous sides of life are por- trayed with ballads and the free verse form of Edgar Lee Masters. 73 r -A GLEE CLUB GLEE CLUB. They stole from, out-shot, came-from-behind, and literally out-hustled their conference foes in high balling their way to second place in the Western Carolina Jun- ior College Conference Tourna- ment and into the Region Ten fi- nals. During a rather lukewarm first half of the season, the Tornadoes lacked their all-conference center Greg Headen, who came on strong, averaging 29.4 points in the sea- son ' s second half. With added re- bounding and scoring strength in Headen, the Tornadoes had a new look. They proceeded to set eight new school records and to finish their season with a 17-12 overall record and a 8-4 conference re- cord. That gave them the 2nd place berth in the conference. The Tornadoes stormed past Montreat-Anderson and Spartan- burg in the WCJCC Tournament, only to lose the neck-and-neck championship contest to Lees- McRae, 75-71. The second place berth in the tournament enabled the Tornadoes to enter the Region Ten playoffs, where they defeated a strong Gas- ton College team in their first play- off game 92-80. In Virginia, how- ever, the Ferrum Panthers caught the Tornadoes on a frigid evening and ran away with a 95-62 victory and the Tornadoes hard-fought season came to an end. Boshamer and ded- ication services for the addition to Boshamer Gymnasium were held February 7. Dedication services were held after the luncheon on the main playing floor of the new women ' s gymnasium, which also includes four faculty offices, a lounge, film room and an additional classroom. Mr. and Mrs. Boshamer were guests of honor that evening at a Brevard basketball game, where the Tornadoes set four school records in blasting visit- ing Montreat-Anderson College 139-65. A FAMILIAR PLACE .... A NEW NAME Former students would not re- cognize the old library at Brevard. Built in 1948, the facility was closed in 1967 with the completion of the new James A. Jones Library. Re- cently renamed the Eugene J. Col- trane Building and renovated for use by the College ' s art depart- ment, the former library contains four classrooms and two areas for display of work done by Brevard students and faculty members. Art instructors Timothy Murray and Robert Poe are shown in the ac- companying pictures as they ex- amine a new student art show on display in the main gallery of the building. SIMS STUDENT CENTER BEGUN Construction on the long- awaited Sims Student Center began early this winter with plans for student occupancy early in the second semester next year. Originally planned as a $250,000 project, the center has been expanded into a two-story centrally air-condi- tioned structure containing over 20,000 square feet. Cost will be in excess of $500,000. The center will include a student post office, college store, grill, lounge areas, tele- vision viewing room, recrea- tion rooms and student gov- ernment offices. tK A MR. AND MISS SOPHOMORE Four students are chosen each year to represent their respective classes as Mr. and Miss Sophomore and Mr. and Miss Freshman. These stu- dents are the active ones — the ones interested in their classes, their school, and the college community as a whole. Taking part in many aspects of college life, they work hard to be elected by their fellow classmates as stu- dent leaders. Mr. and Miss Sophomore Keith Holland and Donna Mills, aptly fill these qualifica- tions. Donna, a resident of Greenville, South Carolina, takes an active role in student politics serving as vice-presi- dent of the class. Keith, vice- president of the Student Gov- ernment Association, finds time to dabble in the chemis- try lab and work toward his major — dentistry. These two students certainly deserved the honor given them. MR. AND MISS FRESHMAN Two familiar faces on the campus are those of Virginia Edmundson and Dave Ches- nut. Virginia, a native of Snow Hill, North Carolina, is usually seen in the music building working toward her major in music. She is interested, de- termined, and hard-working. Dave, president of the freshman class, is politically inclined and takes an active role in student government. Both students rightly deserve their titles — Mr. and Miss Freshman. 89 RLaaS VALENTINE COURT February 14, 1970 — a day of flowers, candy, and cards. The day began with delivery boys rushing in to make the oc- casion a happy one for lovers on campus. Valentine ' s Day ended in a semi-formal dance featuring the Drifters, highlighted by the crowning of Sophomore Sally Helms as the Delphian Sweet- heart. The annual Spring Dance, held May 2, brought forth a feeling of regret as some students realized the year was ending. Given in honor of the graduating class, the dance featured the crowning of the May Queen, Miss Donna Barrack, who re- flected the true feeling of spring in her warm smile and elated cries as she was crowned. Freshman Attendant Leslie Musselman Sophomore Attendant Missy Carriel 99 -AMi Editor-in-chief Paul Sims discusses an article with associate editor, Mark Todd. Mrs. Ena K. Sigmon, newspaper advisor, approves the work of James Chu. reporter. THE CLARION this year has taken great care in see- ing that events at Brevard College have been covered. Sports, student news, de- partment news, editorials, and administration happen- ings have all been included in THE CLARION to keep its readers informed about Brevard College. Ronnie Smith, who edited the paper during the first semester, left Brevard Col- lege and was replaced in the second semester by Paul Sims. Paul believes that a newspaper of THE CLARION ' S size and range of interest should be con- fined to College news in general, occasionally in- cluding interesting articles on other colleges as well as world events. 101 ET_flA, WfHaJ 105 ■ppvp lip WPP 1 106 PLes; 109 ISSJ 110 Editor in Chief, Sherry Queen Mrs. C. This is true for every member of the staff, not only the editor. You wonder constantly whether you ' re gonna make it or not but — somehow — you do. There are so many people responsible for this edition of the PERTELOTE that I don ' t really know where to begin my acknowledgements. Judy Tuer, layout editor; Katie Marrow, typist; Jerry McLean, photographer; and Mrs. Brona Roy, advis- or, have done so much that I ' ll never be able to thank them enough. Then there are my other staff members who sweated this out with us. But I guess, most of all, I need to thank you, the student body. You are the reason for this book; it is YOU. I only hope that this yearbook will come to mean as much to you as it does to me — after all, in the future, it will remain as our only link to the past.
