JAMES ADDISON JONES LIBRARY BREVARD COLLEGE BREVARO NC r y-- , M: JF . ' • riid departina leave bcliind kj rootnriiits on the sandi of fi f jreuard. olleqe QSrevarcl, I lorllt L arolina 1953 jroreword This is the centennial issue of the Pertelote; for one hundred years ago, in 1853, Rutherford College was granted a charter. It was eighty-one years later that Rutherford College merged with Weaver College to form, on the same site previously occu- pied by Brevard Institute, Brevard College. This year Brevard College is celebrating the anniversary of its first beginnings. The staff of the centennial issue of the Per- telote has used footprints to symbolize the impressions left by the faculty and students who have walked through the pages of Brevard ' s history. On each division page this underlying theme is carried out with pictures of the school from the turn of the century. On all of the other pages the pictures catch events of the 1952-1953 school year that will always be part of the freshmen and sopho- more class memories. «l Page Two • •a ;. Ml . mmm- ?, ■: ' ! After occupying the cellar of the confer- ence for three years the team surged to third place and re- tained that position until the end of the season. The suc- cess of the team can be attributed in a large way to Coach James N. Fitzpatrick, the new mentor from the University of Florida. The squad was built around the re- turning lettermen, and the freshmen players contributed all their efforts for a successful season. In the tournament Brevard outpointd North Green- ville 63-59 to go into the semi-finals. The team lost a close decision to Asheville-Biltmore 71-77 in the final game. Brevard placed two men on the All-Conference team, Bill Eller and Jim Stamey. Stamey also had the top aver- age of the team ' s conference game with 17.6 per game. Buckle Down Tornadoes was the theme for this year, and the team lived up to the words of that famous fight song. The Conference scores were as follows: WE OPPONENT THE ' 81 MARS HILL 80 61 SPARTANBURG 67 53 LEES-McRAE 90 60 ASHEVILLE-BILTMORE 65 80 SPARTANBURG 78 58 NORTH GREENVILLE 72 68 LEES-McRAE 78 78 ASHEVILLE-BILTMORE 77 71 MARS HILL 65 75 NORTH GREENVILLE 64 Manager JERRY NICHOLS Coach JAMES FITZPATRICK Manager EDGAR WILKERSON Jorn a does 1953 1. This record classed them as one of the best teams in the Western Carolina Junior College Conference. With only one returning letter-man, the girls went on with a winning spirit and lost games to only two college opponents. High competition is not stressed with the girls team, and much fun was had by the team as they met new and interesting people at other schools. The high scorers for the year were Doris Ferguson and Jennie Lou Morris. A. A. is to stimulate interest in athletics and gymnastics and to standardize and pro- mote health and sportsmanship. Athletic points are award- ed for participation in individual and team sports. When a girl has earned 500 points, she is awarded the school letter. Intramural sports contests are sponsored by the W. A. A. Three groups, the Sophomores, the Freshmen, and the Day Students-have representative teams. Each group elects a student manager who is responsible for the interest and participation of her group. To winning teams go points which go toward the most cherished of all awards— the Intramural Trophy. The interest in the W. A. A. this past year reached a new high. Ninety percent of the girls enrolled at Brevard College entered actively in the contests. The officers and members of the Board are to be congratulated upon such an excellent achievement.
