He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Sherrill of Route 2, Canton, North Carolina. Phil , one loved by all who knew him, was killed in an automobile accident on December 20, 1949. At Brevard, he was a member of several clubs and of the football team. I cannot say, and I will not say That he is dead, he is just away. — in mil iiaM P DEDICATID I D I1R. AI.F1ERT I.. HHAIVII.ETT To you, DR. BRAMLETT, we dedicate the 1950 PERTELOTE. Your untiring leadership and wise guid- ance have helped make better citizens of us. You have aided us in realizing our actual worth in the world and have been a true influence on our lives. Ji- eSSaac to the Class of 1950 Sixteen years ago Mrs. Coltrane and I came to Brevard to open Brevard College and attempt to operate it on a progressive basis. We encountered some problems in the beginning which we did not expect, but we have continued the effort. Year after year the results have been encouraging, but there have been plenty of difficulties which had to be overcome. The time has come now for a younger man to take the helm and carry on the program of the college. We are expecting to retire on June 1. We shall always hold in our minds and hearts the most pleas- ant memories and warmest feelings for the students who have passed through these halls and are now living their own lives in the complicated society of today. We can only bid the members of this year ' s class a fond farewell and pray God ' s richest bless- ings upon every member of the class. _k Faculty and ROBERT F. ANDREWS, JR. B.S. PRE-FOOTBALL GAME PARADE I ' lMllhilll The Brevard College Tornadoes, continually hampered by injuries, came through the 1949 season with a record of 2 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties. The Conference record of 2 wins, 1 tie, and 3 losses enabled Brevard to tie for third place with Gardner Webb in Conference standing. After weeks of rugged drills the Tornadoes tcok to the road and traveled deep into the heart of Georgia to play West Georgia, a highly rated team in that state. Brevard, playing one of its best games of the season, held their opposi- tion to a standstill and ended with a scoreless tie. Bruce Jamerson, all-Conference guard, spear- headed the Brevard attack. Back on their own field, the Tornadoes engaged in hard fought battle with Presbyterian Junior College, which ended in a tie also, 6 to 6. McCauley, all-Con- ference end, scored the lone Brevard touchdown. Brevard traveled to Hendersonville to play Appa- lachian B team and lost a heart breaker, 14 to 7. Upon returning to their home field, the Tornadoes lost to the highly-touted squad from Lees-McRae 22 to 0. Ernie Earnhart, a valu- able back, received a knee injury which kept him out of action the rest of the season. Brevard got into the winning column October 29 as it thrilled a large Homecoming crowd with a 7 to 6 victory over Mars Hill. Ebby Wilkinson, who played an outstanding game, passed to Jack McCauley for the touchdown and McCauley ' s true toe kicked the extra point. Next, the Tornadoes went to Shelby to play Gardner Webb. Fauthall Coach and Co-Captains Left to right: Jack McCauley, Coach Andrews, and Bruce Jamerson e a s on After a tough game Gardner Webb emerged with a 20 to 6 victory, Ebby Wilkinson accounting for the lone touchdown. Seemingly luckless, Brevard lost another game to a powerful Erskine Team at Erskine, 26 to 0. But Brevard ended the season by defeating Mars Hill again 6 to at Mars Hill. This was one of the best games of the season. Ebby Wilkinson again scored for the Tornadoes. McCauley kicked the extra point. This brought the ' 49 season to a successful close, despite several setbacks. Members of the team who played for their last time at Brevard are as follows: Ebby Wilkinson, Jack McCauley, Bruce Jamerson, Bill Barton, Fred Elkins, Ralph Anderson, David Rogers, Clyde Pitts, Johnny Miles, William Miller, Carlton Robertson, and Chester Baker. Two boys on the squad made the all-Conference team. They were Jack McCauley and Bruce Jamerson. Ebby Wilkinson made the second team, while Clyde Pitts, William Miller, and David Price won honorable mention. These boys can be highly praised, along with their other team- mates, for their fine play and good sportsman- ship. Head Coach R. F. Andrews, Jr., and Line Coach Bob Swicegood can also be praised for their splendid work in coaching the Tornadoes through the football season. Brevard College can be proud that, despite frequent injuries to players, these coaches kept ihe team plugging away and kept their spirit high. Here ' s to an even more successful season for 1950. Andrews, emerged from the 1949-50 basket- ball season with an all-game record of 8 wins against 7 losses and a conference record of 7 wins against 6 losses. Although getting off to a slow start, the Tornadoes ended the season by winning five of their last six games. The first five games were played on foreign courts. On December 2 the Brevard team lost their first game to Mitchell College, 57 to 49; they lost the following four: the first at Asheville-Biltmore 76 to 41, the second to Lees-McRae 68 to 52, the third at Gardner- Webb 75 to 42, and the fourth at Mars Hill 69 to 53. Thus ending this early losing streak, the Tornadoes began to show their power by beating Mitchell and North Greenville Colleges 80 to 49 and 62 to 52, respectively. Gardner-Webb, visit- ing Brevard on the 28th of January, posted a hard-fought victory on the Tornadoes, 62 to 59, winning in the last three minutes of play. On the road again, the Tornadoes defealed Spartanburg Junior College 62 to 51 and returned home to defeat a Blue Ridge quintet 53 to 38. Continu- ing on their winning splurge, Brevard downed the highly favored Asheville-Biltmore team in the Brevard gym 52 to 42 and followed with a victory over Spartanburg 64 to 61. In the next game, Lees-McRae slowed Brevard players down by winning over them, 61 to 36. The Brevard team traveled to North Greenville for their last con- ference game and won, 59 to 46. Entering the Western Conference Tournament, the Brevard Tornadoes traveled to Kings Moun- tain and played Gardner-Webb a close-fought battle, only to be overcome 65 to 60 in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter. Outstanding the whole season, Jack McCauley and Charles Brewer were tops in the scoring de- partment. Also the fine play of Ebby Wilkinson, Bonner York, Mack Greenway, Kenny Davis, and Bernie Welch must be mentioned. Other mem- bers of the squad included Harold Watson, Bill Beasley, Bernon Smith, Lewis Smith, Willard Buff- kin, and Sherman Canter. Standing, left to right: Manager Claude Hicks, Morgan Murphy, Charles Robbins, Donald Helms, Ebby Wilkinson, Bobby Ikerd, LaNue Floyd, Hoyt Truelove, Ernest Gilstrap, Norman Huff, Coach Bob Andrews. Baseball Coach Andrews, having a full squad of letter- men to return to take part in our greatest pastime, baseball, wove the Brevard Tornadoes into a fine- spirited group of baseball players. Although rain called for the cancellation of four of the games, the Tornadoes swept through a season of 13 games with a record of 8 wins against 5 losses. This enabled the Tornadoes to take fourth place in conference standing. Games played away from home were with Mars Hill, whose strong nine won 4 to 1; Gardner- Webb, which also won 8 to 3; Asheville-Biltmore, which brought the Tornadoes their first victory 4 to 1; Spartanburg, which won 9 to 6; and North Greenville, another victory for the Tornadoes 12 to 4. The games on the home field seemed to bring victories more frequently, as in the first game against Mars Hill which ended 8 to 5 in favor of the Tornadoes; the next was Gardner-Webb, a hard-fought battle with the Tornadoes suffering a 3 to 2 setback. Asheville-Biltmore also de- feated Brevard 11 to 9, and Spartanburg squeezed through with a 9 to 6 victory; then the Tornadoes ended the season with three victories, two over North Greenville 8 to 2 and 16 to 2, one over Pfeiffer 7 to 3. The pitching of Harold Skipper and Abby Thomas combined with LaNue Floyd ' s and Lander Beal ' s hitting power was a constant threat to every ball club the entire season. Other members of the team who also helped greatly were John Mc- Kissick, Ray DeLapp, Dick Medlin, Hershey Hipps, Ernest Dickerson, and Jack McCauley. Coach Andrews will be greeted with the return of only 4 lettermen for the 1950 season, but will be supported by some fine freshman newcomers, who are expected to bring a successful season to the Brevard Nine. ■—11 Women ' s Athletic Association Officers: President, Eleanor Orr; Vice President, Other Members: Evelyn Eller, Virginia Ruth Mildred Davidson; Secretary, Doreen Pearson; Price, Helen Reece, Betty Whitmire. Tumbling, table tennis, shuffleboard, archery, horseshoes, croquet, badminton, Softball, tennis, and folk dancing were offered in the spring semester. This year Brevard College became a member of the North Carolina Athletic Federation of Col- lege Women. The purpose of the Federation is to further athletic interests and activities for girls and women according to the highest and sound- est standards of sports and other recreation ac- tivities. The Federation strives to increase con- sciousness of its purpose during and after college life. During the month of February, Brevard sent three delegates to a conference held at Guilford College. The diversified intramural program was sched- uled for Monday evenings and Tuesday, Thurs- day, and Saturday afternoons, thereby giving every student an opportunity to engage in the activities which she had learned in her regular classes. The class in community recreation made pos- sible the new student center which the students of Brevard College now share. The bookstore was moved to the new location in the basement of West Hall, and a jukebox and a popcorn machine were installed. The mail boxes are also in the student center. g ecreation is.ooin g J s trch cnj Cy j ifJadketbaU CjirU Iriclci J4ocheij __. — ju turner 3c mnter JcetieJ Jnez C lledae Beauty Queen n I 1948, Crowning 1 1 larianne Ljinije e Beauty Queen uf 1949 , i ■■wwM mmmwm wmmwM liii vJarbara aDoddon Sponsored hy BETTE COOK Cj.ilof-in-Ckiaf 0 tL PettJote Whs Ectttj Shepherd Sponsored hy WILLIAM MILLER XJuiineii rr anaaer of lie f er elo c ™ INEZ ELLEDGE, May Queen and CHARLES FREEMAN, Her Escort Way m May Pole Dance Ace of Diamonds Dance May Court oDa if S n up6 Above: Handkerchief Dance Below: African Dance Polly Mallard and Mildred Miller Norma King and Mary A. We cannot, in view of them, let Dr. Coltrane go away without some attempt to express our sense of appreciation of him and for his achievement. He is a man who has given Brevard much, and who has had much to give. A pioneer and a builder, he has been resourceful and progressive. He is an educator of experience, vision, and skill; a respecter of tradition but also an iconoclast when past customs lose their validity; a practical and prac- ticing Christian; a person of highest integrity, but charitable to the erring, and always willing to go the second mile; generous with his home and his possessions, and generous in his judgments of people; one who has made untold sacrifices for the College — in time, strength, money, and professional advancement; a leader with a strongly-developed social conscience, a de- fender of the underprivileged; one who habitually loses himself in serving others; a participator in community, state, and church activities; one who has struggled with courageous persistence against uncertainty, inadequate equipment, and insufficient funds; a leader positive in manner and quick to come to a decision; a person adaptable and ever-growing; one loyal in friendship and able to evoke loyalty; a believer in work of high quality as one mark of a genuine Christian. Perhaps his greatest success has come because he made of Brevard College a co-operative enterprise and be- cause he had faith in his co-workers. His work, indeed, has been crowned with remarkable, though unmeasurable, success. There is not room here to list his achievements, but for evidence of them look at Brevard College as it is today and at the students who have gone forth from this institution for the past sixteen years. -The Pertelote Staff O 55 ' e xD IW.. —- — — ™ — Brevard College Library 1134 0051871 1 DATE DUE GAYLORD PRINTED IN U.SA
