fjamei. AddUott jjonel Jlibialy. ieaa id, Na UU Caialuta. ll ' • TEIOTE BETTY SMITH Editor-in-Chief VIRGINIA BL ANTON Business Manager TIE Q Li PERTELOTE Published by the Students of Brevard College Brevard, North Carolina ...I- Ten Years of Many changes have occurred at Brevard College since it opened ten years ago. Those teachers who were here that first year, as well as the students, had many prob- lems to face and solve. The first week there were no dishes, knives, or forks for the kitchen, and no equipment for the Biology Laboratory or other things necessary for a college. These were a few of the things those teachers had to face. Dr. Coltrane was always near to help in any way possible. This first year was hard; but even with all the difficulties, the teachers and stu- dents seemed to enjoy being together and working to make everything better. The teas given by Miss Smith and Miss Hayes, the midnight snacks in the Biology Laboratory, after the girls were in bed, as well as the little sessions merely to talk over the happenings of the day were enjoyed by the teachers. Various activities such as hikes, square-dances, and parties were the delight of the students. The work and play they shared seemed to draw them closer together. Since then, Brevard College has moved forward each year. New students come, as well as new teachers, remain ten months, a year or two years, and leave. They always come back to visit, and frequently write and send everybody their best wishes. In 1941 the enrollment consisted of four hundred men and women. At that time Dr. Coltrane drew up his plans for a bigger and better Brevard College. A library, a science building, an industrial education building, and two new dormitories were included. Some day when this war is over Dr. Coltrane ' s dream will materialize. This year many changes have occurred, just as thev did in 1934. 1 he greatest Growth at Brevard College of them is that girls have been moved into Taylor Hall, where the boys used to abide. Since most of the young men are in the service, you see only a few around the campus. This great change is due to the war and has not only taken place on our campus but everywhere. In June both the graduation of the seniors and the celebration of the Tenth An- niversary of the college will occur. This is to be a great event in the history of Brevard College. Also our working toward the goal of $200,000 endowment has contributed to making this one of the greatest years in the life of the institution in spite of all the difficulties growing out of wartime conditions. We look forward to the time when the college may expand materially and at the same time maintain that spirit of cooperation, friendliness, and intimacy which it has possessed from the beginning. Dedication The 1944 Pertelote has the honor of dedicating this volume to Dr. and Mrs. Coltrane, Mr. and Mrs. Pangle, Mr. Trowbridge, Miss Smith, and Miss Hayes. These seven charter members of the faculty of Brevard College have devoted ten years of immeasurable service to the institution. Every student who has been to Brevard College is indebted to these individuals for the love, kindness, and understanding they have given in the great task of preparing us for the future. CLASSES SENIOR CLASS OF -f L r 3S0Jm d • -. w£ For two reasons this is an unusual year for graduates of 1944. One is the war, which has taken so many of the boys who were here last year to the armed services. Another is the tenth anniversary celebration of the College. Despite the great amount of necessary work they did, the seniors along with the other students and faculty, have tried to help in the war effort. Assisting at the Red Cross Center, contributing to the support of refugees, sending textbooks to prisoners of war in order that these soldiers may continue their education are some of the ways employed. Too, they have proved very active in buying war bonds and stamps. The officers for the fall of 1943 as shown above are President, Marjorie Ezzelle; Vice-President, Virginia Blanton; and Secretary-Treasurer, Rebecca Dodd. NINETEEN FORTY-FOUR Louise Banner Dobson, N. C. Euterpean; Christian Workers ' Club; Commercial Club; Dinosaurian, President ' 43; International Re- lations Club. Banner ' s ability always to have a man, and most of the time a different one, is an art the other Brevard lasses envy, especially with this man shortage. Eleanor Elizabeth Beasley Louisburg, N. C. Transfer from Louisburg College; Mnemosvnean, Chaplain ' 44; Clarion Staff, Editor-in-Chief ' 44; Phi Theta Kappa. Besides being a scholar, a musician, and a very democratic citizen, Eleanor is amiable and attractive. Mabel Loliise Beatty Sherrill ' s Ford, N. C. Assistant Dietitian, Virginia Lodge ' 43; Assistant Dietitian, West Hall ' 43; Assistant Dean, Taylor Hall ' 44. Although her hard work as assistant dean of Tavlor Hall has been primarily devoted to girls, Beatty, believe it or not, also has a place in her heart for a few of the opposite sex. : ■: Irene Belk Matthews, N. C. Euterpean; Christian Workers ' Club; Pertelote Staff ' 44; World Friendship Commission, Secretary and Treasurer ' 43, Vice-President ' 44. Without Ginny Brevard would be minus glamour plus. Incidentally, she ' s smart too. Virginia Campbell Danese, West Virginia Mnemosynean; Dramatic Club. Virginia, an as- sistant librarian, not only sends us those little love letters about fines, but she also helps us locate neces- sary material from these immense volumes in the library. Hilda Jeannette Carter Akron, Ohio Mnemosynean; Dinosaurian; International Rela- tions Club. Though small in stature, I lilda has ample brains and ability. Janie Lee Carter Waxhaw, N. C. Euterpean; Christian Workers ' Club; Mu Delta, Librarian ' 44. Jennie Lee ' s ever-present co-operation and disposition, as sunny as her hair, will make her a well-loved nurse. Doris Caudle Peachland, N. C. Euterpean. The chances are Doris ' home eco- nomics will really be put to use, if not professionally, for the Brevard student who has won her heart. Mona Coats Greensboro, N. C. Mnemosynean; Day Students ' Club; Dramatics Club. Mona discovers that she can usually work out satisfactory solutions in chemistry experiments, algebra equations, and love problems. ' 44 Carolyn Curtis Hayesville, N. C. Wilder, the Tornadoes completed a successful war- time season, winning three of the four games played. Handicapped by a squad of only sixteen players and a delay in starting practice, Coach Wilder was able to schedule just four games. On October 30, Homecoming Day, the Torna- does defeated Brevard High School, 25 to 0, on the College Field. Coach Wilder I he Tornadoes traveled to Christ School on November 6, to suffer their only defeat of the season at the hands of the Greenies, 14 to 7. Two weeks later, November 15, the Tornadoes defeated Biltmore High School, 20 to 6. On Thanksgiving Day, a return game with the Brevard High Blue Devils was played on the High School Field. Again the Tornadoes won, this time to the score of 21 to 6. Manager Bobby Murph Back row: Robert Folger, Bernard Petty, Bob Brannon, T. C. Regular physical education classes meet each week. These are devoted to de- velopment of physical fitness through gymnastics and self testing activities emphasizing endurance, flexibility, strength, and co-ordination. In addition, an elec tive seasonal sport program is in effect, with the motto A sport for every girl. Every girl chooses a sport or activity each season from the following groups: (fall)— speedball, folk dancing, badminton, and archery; (winter)— basketball, bowling, folk dancing, badminton, volley ball, and recreational games; (spring) — tennis, archery, badminton, and track. The intramural program offers competitive activities in both team and individual sports. The women students are divided into the blue and white teams, according to ability and experience. Color team tournaments and contests are held in each sport during various seasons. Following the color team competition, challenge games are played between council groups, clubs, classes, and dormitory groups.
