Gerald has served in the kitchen and uptown at the Grill with outstanding efficiency. Katherine Singleton Henderson, North Carolina Christian Student Movement, Chairman of Lead- ership Training Committee ' 41; Clarion Staff, Associate Editor ' 41; Fireside Club, Secretary- Treasurer ' 40, President ' 41; Folk-Dance Club, Secretary-Treasurer ' 40, ' 41; Mnemosynean, Presi- dent ' 41. Duties in the Dean ' s office occupied most of Kay ' s time, but she found opportunities to become indispensable in student activities. Zedric Cecil Smathers Canton, North Carolina Cliosophic, Critic ' 41; Model Airplane Club. Bzz-z-z-z-z. No, that ' s not a rocket; it is Smathers in the new army pursuit plane. Annie Laurie Smith Walnut Cove, North Carolina Euterpean. Annie Laurie carries with her a never- failing dignity and a sweetness of disposition for which everv one admires her. Hubert Robinette Smith Black Mountain, North Carolina Band; Folk-Dance Club. Hubert expects to use his engineering ability in an aeronautics career. Lou Roy Snow Bald Creek, North Carolina Choir; Euterpean; Preacher ' s Kids. Wherever Lou Roy is, there is an atmosphere of gaiety, whether she is singing, telling anecdotes, or just laughing. William Austin Squires Pineville, North Carolina Delphian. Bill is a hard-working boy who is an important cog in our labor machine. He also finds time for a good fast game of tennis.

Vance ' s good work both as assistant dietitian at Ross Hall and as a member of the Student Council will be greatly missed. Robert Franklin Robinson Gastonia, North Carolina Agriculture Club; Cliosophic. Life was just fine when Frank was given a good five-cent cigar and was sitting in on an exciting bull session. Neil Garland Rogers Hendersonville, North Carolina Basketball. Red would have gone home every week-end had it not been for his interest in basket ball and square dancing. James I Iovvard Rowe Charlotte, North Carolina Choir; Dramatic Club; Football, Manager ' 41. Rowe did his part to help make this year our most successful football season by being an efficient manager. Jimmie Aquilla Scott Fair Bluff, North Carolina Baseball; Choir; Delphian, President ' 41; Folk- Dance Club; Sigma Pi Alpha, President ' 41. Jim- mie will undoubtedly be one of the best physicians in the United States if he goes after his professional goal as he does his class work and other activities. Marie Estena Scott Franklin, North Carolina Euterpean; Fireside Club. Marie ' s c heerfulness and efficiency in the dining hall made her a valuable waitress. Mary Jo Setser Franklin, North Carolina Euterpean. Mary Jo stayed out a semester at the end of her freshman year and came back with interesting accounts of her travels out West. Craig Rutledge Sharpe Brevard, North Carolina Day Students ' Club; Pertelote Staff, Business Man- ager ' 41. Craig was outstanding in at least three fields: classroom physics, business management of the annual, and preparation for the business of air- conditioning.

Steve is a tall fellow never lets studying interfere with his football. who Betty Louise Sumner Bat Cave, North Carolina Boosters ' Club; Choir; Euterpean; Folk-Dance Club; International Relations Club; Secretary of Sopho- more Class ' 41; Sigma Pi Alpha; Student Council. Many people are first attracted to Betty by her voice. Her radiant personality and gay outlook on life never fail to hold her friends. Gloria Deane Taylor Dallas, North Carolina Boosters ' Club; Mnemosynean; Pertelote Staff ' 40. When Gloria wasn ' t busy typing, she could usually be found in the book store checking up on the male. William Marshall Teague Brevard, North Carolina Baseball; Block B Club; Day Students ' Club; Football. Bud is a likeable fellow because of his unexpected wit. He will be remembered as one of the boys who yanked the lion ' s tail on Turkey Day. Virginia Mae Tessier Franklin, North Carolina Euterpean; Folk-Dance Club; Mu Delta, Vice- President ' 41. State College and a nursing career are competing to see which one will get Virginia. Lewis Townsend Pisgah Forest, North Carolina Although Lewis was a successful contractor, he had the ambition and perseverance to continue his col- lege education. Julia VVomble Travis Apex, North Carolina Christian Workers ' Club, Vice-President ' 40; Euterpean; Future Teachers of America; Sigma Pi Alpha. Julia ' s intellectual achievements and re- ligious interests will help her at Scarritt, but the young minister at High Point College will be more impressed by her ability to cook. Fritz Carl Waldrop Franklin, North Carolina Agriculture Club; Folk-Dance Club. Fritz keeps one eve on the dairv and the other on Libertv (S. C).
