MGR. tL, F U IV R D It is from our college motto, Labor, Learn, and Live, that we draw the theme this issue of the PERTELOTE. Student labor has become, to most of us, the one chance for higher education. Through the co- operation of those who have made it possible for us to come to this insti- tution and become self-educated, this great idea functions. It is with sincere appreciation and acknowledgement of this fact that we, the senior class, regard our days at Brevard College. We, the staff, through pictures and illustrations which we have borrowed from our very modern world, have tried to give our many friends who will see this book some idea of the various activities that are carried on through our comprehensive work program. Most of us who have worked are thankful for what we have received through this program, not only for the compensation in money but also for the things we have learned to do and the contacts we have made through working together. We hope through these efforts to bring to our friends and fellow students the meaning of worked-for education and to show our genuine appreciation for it. —THE EDITOR. o the idea of Sett-help tnrouak itudent tabor, ana to U-)r. i ottrane, u k untinna ettorts kaue made it po56ibte here, we dedicate tkii iiiue of the l edetote. loSe .?fe592 ' i ' THE 1940 PERTELOTE ' % ■ i { [ est -Mali - Lj ' iHs ' .UJormitof, J 11 - f Frances f oss -Mail - ijoip ' .Jjormitor ' i ■ aulor J ail - i5oip ' .Jjonnit. ♦ iXih, ' i r ion ' J wltiV ,, Uir inia cd.od e - Lfirli ' .Ujonnitont ■THE 1940 PERTEIOTI ' UMA MUEH Unto Brevard ivere ever loyal; We sing to her a song oj praise. Our College, -we zvdl not forsake thee, Nor for one moment will forget; Thy standards m our hearts -we ' ll cherish To guide us till our sun has set. I resident J e66aae TO TH[ CLASS OF 1940 J OR THE past two years we have been living together. Students have re- ceived inspiration from the facuhy, and members of the facuhy have likewise been inspired by fellowship with students. Perhaps all of us have learned to live to- gether; and if so, one of the most important lessons of life has been learned. As mem- bers of the class move out into active life, they will have opportunity to get a more thorough mastery of this particular art. My message, therefore, is one of encourage- ment. In the simple affairs of life, seek to develop those qualities which lessen friction between individuals and between groups as well. Learn to be a good citi- zen. Share the burdens with others and remember that civilization moves forward by the sufferings of the men and women who live in every generation. President of the College ' THE 1940 PERTELOTl ' JU.., . THE T H I H D E S The Brevard Tornadoes, with seven returning lettermen, were delayed for two weeks in starting practice. This is perhaps the reason for the two tie games with Wofford Frosh and Wingate at the start of the season. Hampered by injuries, Brevard was defeated by Blue Ridge, and suffered her only conference defeat at the hands of the powerful and fast aggregation from Belmont Abbey, who have been champions for three successive years. The Tornado won from her next two conference foes, P. J. C. and the strong Lees-McRae eleven, by decisive scores. The hardest blow came when she was defeated by a long run by Small, a fleet back of Mars Hill. This was the most successful season in the history of the college, for with Campbell and Belmont Abbey co-champions, Brevard ranked second in con- ference standings. Handicapped by the lightest squad in the conference, Brevard is building a superior football machine under the able guidance of Coaches Christenbury and Hawkins. Those who saw the most service during the season were: Craven and Greene, ends; Robertson and Young, tackles; Co-Captain Weddell and Camp- bell, guards; and Johnson, center. The backs were: Barden, McFee, Co-Captain Shuford, Teague and Pickelsimer. Although they have not been champions, they have the best record, over the past two years, of any junior college in North Carolina. In 1938- ' 39 the Tornado compiled 1017 points while their opponents were getting 796. In 1939- ' 40 they compiled 1016 while their opponents were struggling to get 783. The squad was a rangy lot, averaging well over six feet. It was a fast and well- coached aggregation. Coach Christenbury seems to be able to do wonders; for again as last year, with only three lettermen, he developed a winning team which dropped only six games while winning 21. Third row: Pickelsimer, Mackie, Martin, Grant, Bales. e H U B U L Although the season is very young, Brevard has already won two games, one from a strong Textile nine, 3 to 2, and another from Asheville High, 12 to 3. From all indications the Tornado should have perhaps the strongest team in the history of the college. With Gauldin, a pitcher of known ability, on the mound, and with an array of able batsmen, led by Palmer and Shuford, Co-Captains, who can field as well as they can hit. Coach Christenbury looks toward the coming season with a smile on his face. JENKINS CO-CAPTAIN At the start of the season it appears that every man is in excellent physical condition and should carry the name of Brevard high. Among our opponents will be Textile, Biltmore, Asheville School for Boys, Western Carolina Teachers ' College, and Mars Hill. An encouraging feature has been the increase of interest in the sport in Tennisland. Each match has become an athletic activity of interest to a large group of spectators. ' ■, SUPEUHIVES feki STUDHU AT WORK HI HPRECIUIOI It is in the spirit of sincere appreciation that the entire staff of the 1940 PERTELOTE wishes to thank all those persons who have made this edition possible. The staff within itself has worked hard to put into it those things that are to be most remembered concerning the year 1940. However, without the complete cooperation of students, faculty and our fellow-workers. The Miller Printing Company and The Charlotte Engraving Company, this edition would probably fall short of what it is. We are grateful to all those students who submitted pictures, especially to E. J. Winecoff, whose help in this field has been invaluable. To our advertisers we extend a hearty wish for continued success, and our thanks for their cooperation in helping to make this edition possible. The entire annual staff wishes to take this opportunity to express its appreciation t o our faculty adviser. Miss Craig; without her guidance and cooperation this PERTELOTE could not have been made a success. —THE EDITOR (K4) htL.
