endeavor. Brevard College has put within the grasp of everyone two years of good education. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to ascertain just what Brevard College may evolve towards in the future. The 1937 Student Body, however, realizes no limits to the heights to which it may rise. We believe in the ability of the faculty of Brevard; we have confidence in the methods being used; and we have an unalterable sanguineness regarding the integrity of the principle and the purpose to which Brevard College has pledged itself. Advancing on a knowledge of what Brevard has accomplished in its three years of life, and building our faith on the solid rock of its ideals, the 1937 edition of the PERTELOTE concerns itself with a few plausible prognostications regarding the future of our College. During our stay at Brevard, plans for an expansion program were formu- lated. Actual work on certain phases of the program was begun. Slowly, day by day, a dream began to materialize. Piles of heavy river rock, cement piping stacked high to one side, the dull sound of picks falling on hard earth, have meant joy to us as they added conviction to the hope that an athletic field and gymnasium would soon be a reality on the Brevard campus. Seeing that this part of the development has already received momentum it is rational to believe that the rest of the plans will develop according to expectation. An infirmary and a library will be the next immediate projects. After those there will be a dormitory for young women. Brevard College will then concentrate on acquiring a science building and its equipment. Mean- while the college anticipates an aggregate endowment of a million dollars. We join in these material aspirations. It is hoped and believed that, as we leave Brevard College and take our places in the world as citizens, with a superior preparation to meet the problems of living, both from a standpoint of religious fortitude and practical ability, we shall not be content merely to remember Brevard College favorably for the many advantages which it has extended to us; but that we shall show our appreciation in material contribu- tions. We hope in this manner to continue to have a part in the building of Brevard. The magnitude of our optimism regarding the loftiness of religious and spiritual attainment Brevard College will ascend to brooks no discouragement. Such optimism can be sustained and demonstrated only in the future lives of this graduating class and the students who are to follow. —THE EDITOR.

J uiLdbicj H xzvcuid Brevard College, located in Brevard, North Carolina, in the French Broad Valley, occupies the site of the former Brevard Institute. It is the result of a merger of Rutherford and Weaver Colleges. The history of these institutions, operating under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, dates back several decades. Brevard College, as their successor, is pledged to the continuance of their noble traditions. With the establishment of the new- college, however, a new and different principle is emphasized. Brevard is, first of all, a work college. It is an institution where low cost is secondary in importance only to the thoroughness and quality of work. Brevard represents four ideals — a Christian institution, sound scholarship, the lowest possible student expense, and practical training. The exercise of econo- mic principles is based on the idea that it is better to receive than to give: Brevard College is founded on the reverse of that idea. Modern industry is continually tapping new markets for its products: Brevard College is investigat- ing new markets for its educational advantages. Brevard, through a plan of self-help, has enabled to obtain a college education young men and young women who would otherwise have been denied that privilege because of expense. A few students in every college earn their expenses on their own initiative. Brevard has dedicated itself to specializing in this field of educational

t onmitzz Connestee, Connestee, sing me a song Of the mountains and woods whence you spring; Of the wild rhododendron, the glowing pink laurel, The roseate blooms of the sweet mountain laurel, Of them sing to me, Connestee, sing. Connestee, Connestee, tell me a tale Of the men who have lived in your part Of the wild mountain fastness, and conquered its perils, Who have lived on its richness in spite of its perils, Who have gained from it fullness of heart. Connestee, Connestee, sing me this song Of the mountains and woods whence you spring; Of the cold mountain winter, the sweet mountain springtime, Of the green and the rose and the blue of the springtime, Of these sing to me, Connestee, sing. — Margaret Ryan -Jks C oLU sas 9
