M ' : tJ;:W if!«l±t.J JO)zdlaatlon I 7 O the essential and characteristic constituents of Brevard College, to those phases of its activity in which Brevard College is original, and to the democratic prin- ciple that education should be brought within the financial grasp of every young man and young woman, this THE 1937 EDITION OF THE PERTELOTE, pays sincere tribute. J uiLdbicj H xzvcuid Brevard College, located in Brevard, North Carolina, in the French Broad Valley, occupies the site of the former Brevard Institute. It is the result of a merger of Rutherford and Weaver Colleges. The history of these institutions, operating under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, dates back several decades. Brevard College, as their successor, is pledged to the continuance of their noble traditions. With the establishment of the new- college, however, a new and different principle is emphasized. Brevard is, first of all, a work college. It is an institution where low cost is secondary in importance only to the thoroughness and quality of work. Brevard represents four ideals — a Christian institution, sound scholarship, the lowest possible student expense, and practical training. The exercise of econo- mic principles is based on the idea that it is better to receive than to give: Brevard College is founded on the reverse of that idea. Modern industry is continually tapping new markets for its products: Brevard College is investigat- ing new markets for its educational advantages. Brevard, through a plan of self-help, has enabled to obtain a college education young men and young women who would otherwise have been denied that privilege because of expense. A few students in every college earn their expenses on their own initiative. Brevard has dedicated itself to specializing in this field of educational endeavor. Brevard College has put within the grasp of everyone two years of good education. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to ascertain just what Brevard College may evolve towards in the future. The 1937 Student Body, however, realizes no limits to the heights to which it may rise. We believe in the ability of the faculty of Brevard; we have confidence in the methods being used; and we have an unalterable sanguineness regarding the integrity of the principle and the purpose to which Brevard College has pledged itself. Advancing on a knowledge of what Brevard has accomplished in its three years of life, and building our faith on the solid rock of its ideals, the 1937 edition of the PERTELOTE concerns itself with a few plausible prognostications regarding the future of our College. During our stay at Brevard, plans for an expansion program were formu- lated. Actual work on certain phases of the program was begun. Slowly, day by day, a dream began to materialize. Piles of heavy river rock, cement piping stacked high to one side, the dull sound of picks falling on hard earth, have meant joy to us as they added conviction to the hope that an athletic field and gymnasium would soon be a reality on the Brevard campus. Seeing that this part of the development has already received momentum it is rational to believe that the rest of the plans will develop according to expectation. An infirmary and a library will be the next immediate projects. After those there will be a dormitory for young women. Brevard College will then concentrate on acquiring a science building and its equipment. Mean- while the college anticipates an aggregate endowment of a million dollars. We join in these material aspirations. It is hoped and believed that, as we leave Brevard College and take our places in the world as citizens, with a superior preparation to meet the problems of living, both from a standpoint of religious fortitude and practical ability, we shall not be content merely to remember Brevard College favorably for the many advantages which it has extended to us; but that we shall show our appreciation in material contribu- tions. We hope in this manner to continue to have a part in the building of Brevard. The magnitude of our optimism regarding the loftiness of religious and spiritual attainment Brevard College will ascend to brooks no discouragement. Such optimism can be sustained and demonstrated only in the future lives of this graduating class and the students who are to follow. —THE EDITOR. t onmitzz Connestee, Connestee, sing me a song Of the mountains and woods whence you spring; Of the wild rhododendron, the glowing pink laurel, The roseate blooms of the sweet mountain laurel, Of them sing to me, Connestee, sing. You are not the same persons you were when you came to this in- stitution. You have more information and you have developed some new techniques. You ought to be better and different. You ought to have the ability and the habit of standing alone. You ought to have the cooperative spirit also. My great hope for you is that you may continue your education and that those whole- some qualities which you have acquired here may continue to develop. We hope that your various achievements in future years may reflect credit upon this college. The public will evaluate the institution by the appraisal which it places upon you. Eugene J. Coltrane, President of the College. ;iiii!MiEimittMNMmiMiffiniiinNflaMiiniai Sdf- fdfl In this picture is depicted one of the most important extra-curricula activities on our campus. The one-hundred acre farm not only furnishes many students the op- portunity to earn money to be applied on their expenses, but suppies the campus dining halls with meats and vegetables. Brevard makes it possible for deserving young people to attend college who would not be able to go without this remunera- tion which their practical ability brings them. If one takes his work seriously, as he should, he gets practical experience. The students have instructors to supervise the work which they are given to do. It is really a pleasure to work in a system of this kind. One does not feel that it is work, but that it is a part of his regular college training. No matter what his choice of work may be, he gains ex- perience which will benefit him in later years. It is with the deepest appreciation that this cooperative plan is accepted by the students of Brevard. We wish it even more success in the future than it has had in the past. zmozi ICZX± President -Marshall Houts Vice-President James O. Rogers Secretary . From its beginning, in September, 1934, it has been in dire need of an ade- quate place in which to carry on its ath- letic program. There was no place for football. Basketball was played in the Brevard High School gymnasium. The baseball team could not perform efficiently on the field which was furnished it. In the building program, outlined by Mr. Coltrane, to which the students im- mediately pledged almost two thousand dollars, an athletic field and gymnasium were the first objectives. The athletic field will supply facilities for football, baseball and track. When finished it will aid immeasurably our athletic program. The athletics in any school should build the student both physically and mentally. Certainly Brevard ' s administration keeps this purpose in mind. We feel that this year ' s student body was really the foun- dation on which the building program was laid. It was with much enthusiasm that the workers were greeted on the morning work began. The Tornado fought a good battle all the way. At the end of the first half the score was Erskine 7, Brevard 7. Throughout the struggle the teams fought on a water soaked field. Undaunted by the loss to Erskine Frosh , the Brevard eleven traveled to Asheville the following week and defeated Biltmore College, 21-13. The Tornado scored immediately after the beginning of the game. Atkins carried the ball over for the first touchdown. McMinn and Hicks were responsible for the other scores. Ed Clayton played one of the best games of his career. The Brevard Tornado was defeated in a hard fought game with Belmont Abbey on October 3 1 . Captain Edwards was the outstanding player of the day. The Tornado lost the third conference game of the season to a stronger Campbell eleven. Bill Edwards and John Odom turned in exceptional per- formances. The Brevard Tornado swung into action against the powerful Lees-McRae eleven on November 14 and won their first conference game by a score of 25-13. The team had little difficulty with P. J. C. a week later and walked away with a 32 to victory. Brevard went to Mars Hill on November 27. There it outplayed, outfought, and did everything but outscore the strong Mars Hill Lions in a game that was McMINN End SWAN Tackle DeSHAW Quarter-back Guard ODOM Guard 58 EDMUNDSON Tackle -Joxnadi heartbreaking to lose. The final score was 38-7. As the thrills and the throbs of victories and defeats slowly recede, we find that we have not won the championship, but have won all moral victories humanly possible. The cheering student body has witnessed a Tornado that piled our opponents up time and again before the whistle blew for the game to end. The Tornado did not know how to go down before the game ended. Although we do not claim the championship we claim that we have a fighting Tornado to which we all accord much respect. We think of the coming year and the success that we see the team repre- senting Brevard will have. Long live the Tornado and may it be the team that defeats the Mars Hill Lions in 1937! Although the team was faced with several difficulties, statistics show that Brevard won 6 and dropped 7 games. Hyatt, Stubbs, Rogers, S. Tweed, Kiger, DeShaw, Totherow, Speas, C. The pitching seems to be the least worry to Coach Ranson. Captain Deal, an ace right-hander, is expected to start most of the games. However, if any- thing should go wrong with Captain Deal, Coach Ranson has two reliable men in the southpaws, Lee and Tweed. The outstanding weakness of the team appears to be in the hitting depart- ment; however, if the new men, Cauble, Craven, Stubbs, Frye, and Moss, live up to their promises, a strong team will be developed. From all indications these men have plenty of class and they are sure of a position on the team. Although the Brevard Tornadoes got off to a bad start by losing two of their first conference games, they have displayed plenty of power lately by defeating the strong Mars Hill team. An early season defeat given Brevard by Oak Ridge was recently revenged by the score of 9 to 7. ( 2yuty w y Brevard is primarily a work college. In following out its principles of education reduced to a minimum cost, the college administration established a system of universally imposed work. By this plan every student is required to do a certain amount of work in return for which he receives a substantial reduction in his expenses. We remember with pleasure the demo- cratic spirit which prevailed among us as a result of our knowing that every student was a hard working one, that every young person on our campus found it advisable to earn a part of his or her expenses by doing duty work, and that no member of our group deemed him- self above engaging in honest labor. jzatu t£d I MISS GUSSIE ROSE PLESS Sponsored by Leighton Presson Editor-in-Chief Pertelote 80 oJ  3 MISS DOROTHY BUNCH Sponsored by Harold Severs Business Manager Pertelote JRZ y t - oS oj r MISS EDITH BEARD Sponsored by Odell Salmon Editor of The Clarion 82 Sis rt J s ' MISS BERNICE BRANTLEY Sponsored by Eddie Carlisle President of the Student Council MISS RUTH BREWER Sponsored by Jack Reid President of the Freshman Class MISS EVELYN SWARINGEN Sponsored by Marshall Houts President of the Sophomore Class MISS ELLEN WADDELL Sponsored by Delphian and Mnemosynean Literary Societies 83 MISS MARY MAGDALENE GRIFFITH Sponsored by William Edwards Captain of the Football Team MISS IRENE PARSONS Sponsored by Cliosophic and Euterpean Literary Societies MRS. Economizing with Electricity Intelligent and progressive housewives are not only relieving themselves of household and kitchen drudgery and making their homes healthier and brighter and happier, but they are actually and substantially reducing their household budgets through the wise application of electricity to house- hold duties. Take the three all important matters of cooking, refrig- eration and water heating for instance. With all its ad- vantages of coolness, convenience, the saving of time and labor, and other advantages, electric cookery costs no more than the old fashioned ways. And electric refrigeration, with all of its advantages over ordinary refrigeration ac- tually costs less — much less. Automatic electric hot water service is economical also — almost beyond belief. The cost of electric service has had a constant trend downward since the power industry came into being. . . . The cost of living has substantially increased during the past three years; the cost of electric service has continued to de- crease. DUKE POWER COMPANY General Office CHARLOTTE, N. Margaret Wilson has much executive ability and is hoping to be head of a large business organization. Eddie Carlisle ' s interest lies in agricul- ture. He has evidenced so many talents while at Brevard that we feel sure he will lead a happy and useful life in his chosen work. It is with a whispered prayer that we record the foregoing aims and purposes. Youth is prone to look at the world through rose-colored glasses. Who is qualified to peer into the future and say my life shall be thus ? But what edi- fice can be successfully constructed with- out plans? The climb ahead of us is long and ar- dous but not impassable. Those who run most swiftly and with greatest ease may grow weary and sit down to rest or the slowest may plod ahead to realization and fulfillment of desires. Human des- tinies should be referred to only with reverence. In compiling these purposes, as we have heard them expressed by the individuals concerned, we are setting the die for a great experiment. Twenty years hence it will be interesting to re- view this page and compare the dreams of youth with accomplishments achieved at the half-way mark in life. ,1 , . WHITEWAY DRY CLEANERS u 7.
