Treasurer Attending long board meetings, serving without pay or glory, often subject to unjust criticism, responsible for efficient management, and progressive schools as well, school board members must be public spirited citizens. In Brentwood we are fortunate that intelligent, clear thinking men willingly give time and effort to make good schools a part of our community. 3 SUPERINTENDENT Greetings to the Class of 1954. The class of ,54 is to be congratulated upon its attainments during the six years spent at Brentwood High School. One of the characteristics of graduating classes is the variable nature of its accomplishments. Some classes seem to excel in many fields of interest while other graduating groups appear to be less gifted. There are as many reasons for this as there are individuals in the class, for no two persons are exactly the same in ability or in interest. In the class of ,54 we find many students who have helped to build a good reputation for this group and very few who have held down the level of accomplishment. Many members of this class will now lose all contact with the rest of the group and will strike out on paths which lead away in all directions. May your individual successes be as great as those of the class of ,53. We follow each of you with a sincere interest and concern for your Welfare. Paul R. Slater. 4 PRINCIPAL I am personally grateful for this op- portunity to thank you, the students of Brentwood High School, for the fine spirit you have shovvn in the past year, to congratulate you on the achieve- ments of the year, and to Wish for all of you an increasing measure of happiu ness and success. Sincerely yours, Thomas R. Shupe Principal Harry T. Diffendafer Thomas R. Shupc ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Opportunity is the door opposite you. The Divine Planner has seen to it that always there is such a portal, and that it is accessible. Many people think opportun- ity means a big or inviting door, but this present one may be small and plain. Because people do not understand that this one is theirs, mistakenlv they say there are no opportunities. Every door opens on the same possibilities. Every career stretches or shrinks to the size of the person who makes it. Harry T. Diffendafer 5 Miss Janet L. Campbell -A.B. Pennsylvania College for Women, M. Litt., University of Pittsburgh. Section, Serum THE ANTHEM Nancy and Gerald organized the writing of this year's volume of The Anthem. Their achievement represents hours of labor in school and at home. More than that, they have cheerfully accepted the criticism that accompanies any responsible position and, with real leadership, have successfully drawn the best from their classmates. If the 1954 Anthem is a success, most of the credit is theirs. H--X CHARLES O'DATO IOSEPHINE COLUMBUS VOCALISTS Through junior and senior high school Sally and Dave have sung their Way. From choruses, to senior choir, to ensemble and octet, they have practiced conscientiously. With experience has come skill Which, added to natural singing talent, have made their voices such an important part of our singing high school. ggi!- HON ORIN GERALD RUBENSTEIN NANCY ETZEL THE STUDENT FORUM The Student Forum serves the school through its governing power. Iosephine and Chick have always been ready to do Whatever job the Forum has for them, regardless of the time needed or the Work involved. Their con- tributions have continued Whether they were recognized by election to office, or Whether they received no recognition at all. This is the measure of real service. DAVID FERO SARA COLLIER :ERVICE JOYCE OPTEKAR ROBERT RUDOLPH ATHLETES Nancy and Alton are our athletes. Natural ability and continued practice have made Nancy a part of every intramural team that wants to insure winning. Alton, as co-captain of the football team, has demonstrated that he is interested in Brentwood, not himself. Whether as captain of the football team, as letterman on the varsity basketball team, or as a weight man in track, he is always there, always trying. He is an example of the kind of spirit Brentwood wants. We are proud of both. lVIRGINIA FORD JOHN SATTELE THE MINARET Ioycels problem is the editing of living news in the Minaret while Bob must make the paper self supporting. When news beats must be covered, cuts engraved, editorials written, and proofs checked, an editor needs all her skill. And when this collection, in newspaper form, must be paid for, then the business manager must be ingenious. The Minaretv editors provided both these qualities. NANCY CULP ALTON DOBSON IN STRUMEN TALISTS Talented Virginia and Iohn have long been the backbone of our instrumental de- partment. Skilled musicians, technically trained, they serve as models for younger players. Better than that, they are models of dependability. Ready to work, ready to serve, they are as quick to offer service now as they were when they first tried for their chairs. Thomas Moore The year we have so long awaited has finally come to a close. As we are about to enter the outside world, we wish that ourhigh school days were just beginning. Remembering how we stood shivering in our stadium to cheer on the team, our Christmas Cantatas and Spring Festivals, and the accomplishments in P. O. D., We leave with an increased appreciation of the cooperation with our fellow students. We hope the knowledge and help which we have gained from the faculty will help us to be better citizens in the future. Centered around a completely unsophistocated country girl named Jenny, the story took place at Father Moynihanls parish house. The hilarious action stemmed from Fatheris efforts to remodel If-nnyis looks, find a man for her, and marry her off. Director Mr. W. R. WERT YEAGER 71 KUS FOOTBALL The B. H. S. football team started practice in the latter part of August at the Brentwood High School Stadium. Coached by George Istvan, George Schmidt, Ronald Bloch, and Bob Wheaton, the Gridders finished the season with a record of 2 wins and 7 losses. The Spartans played inspired ball during the first half against their traditional rivals Baldwin and Carrick but lost in the second half to these powerful opponents. Baldwin and Carrick went on to tie for the Triadic Trophy. The most exciting play of the season came in the Springdale game with but two seconds to play and the score knotted at 20-20. Falcone lofted a long pass to Damico, who pulled the ball out of the hands of two defenders and dashed across the goal line for the win- ning T. D. Senior lettermen are ends Gil Damico, Conrad Knetzer, and Bob Hamel, linemen Alton Dobson, Ioe Prebles, Chick O:Data and Jack Gracey, and backs Bog Entress, Dick Falcone, Bob Vitale, Vince Onamastico, Bob Yeager. SPARTAN HOOPSTERS Led by Captain Paul Heintze, only returning letterman, the Spartan hoop- sters completed a commendable season against some of the strongest teams in the W.P.I.A.L. Hampered by inexperience, the team played very close games which could easily have resulted in a better record had the boys been able to hit at critical times. This was especially true in the Baldwin game, when a basket in the final minute could have turned the tide in favor of the Spartans. This yearis aggregation was directed by Head Coach Bill Douglass, assisted by George Schmidt. Senior lettermen were Paul Heintze, Vince Onomastico, Boger Entress, Chick O,Dato, Alton Dobson, and Iohn Satteleg Iunior lettermen include jim Lew, jack Benson, john Cargotta, Bill Cutendorf and Bob Layman. lack Cracey and Bob Hamel served as managers for the team.
