MARI E Men of the U.S. Marine Corps have served aboard naval vessels since 1775. These detachments are a distinct and integral part of the ship's complement assigned three specific missions by Navy Regulations: to provide a unit trained for field operations ashore, to provide gun crews, and, to provide interior security. The Marine Detachment, designated the Eighth Gunnery Division, is commanded by CAPT James E. Page. They maintain a well trained rifle platoon, reinforced With machine guns, mortars and anti-tank Wea- pons, man three-inch Gun Mounts 31 and 33, render honors to visiting dignitaries, act as orderlies for the CO and Exec, and maintain and operate the ship's brig.
