! LCDR H. J. OWEN Gunnery Oiiicer The shrill sound of the Bosyns pipe is followed over the IMC by the word, This will be a firing run to port, all hands stand clear of the Main Battery N. It is only a firing exercise with rounds fired only for practice, not in anger. But at GQ or lAA the 367 men of the Gunnery Department give the BRE- MERTON its reason for being. Her primary mission is to steam as a combatant vessel, despite the ambassadorial assigments she receives during peace time, and the personnel of lst, 2nd and 3rd Divisions give the BREM her big sting, the 8 inch gun. The 4th and 5th Divisions man and maintain the 5 inch battery, the 6th and 7th Divisions man and maintain the 3 inch battery, and FOXTROT directs the whole show from directors and plotting rooms. The Marine Detachment's primary duty is not to provide orderlies, regardless of what you might have heard, rather it is to function as a nucleus landing party. That weird looking machine that is seen on our -fantail is operated by those tourists, V Division. All is not work, however. There are divisional parties which even the Gun Boss manages to attend. And our ports of call have seen the green of our Presidents' eyes bearing witness to gay times 'Q on the beach 77. LTJG K A. TUBBS LTJG P. RICH Flre Control OHicer First Li6UtCU3f1t LT R.
